Actually La Lechera probably knows more than me about cumbia, but I'm not into this Meridian Brothers stuff. There's so much trippy cumbia that is less calculated.

(Just so no one gets the wrong idea, I don't know all that much about nu-cumbia, have traditionally preferred the old fashioned sounding stuff but I knew emil.y would like that track)

For the record though, aside from the sloppy cumbia Iron Man, I don't see what's not to like about Ondatrópica -- it's recorded so well, and sounds so *right* for that costeño Colombian sound that I feel like dismissals based on Iron Man cover are pretty kneejerk. I'm not in love with the Ana Tijoux track either, but there is a lot to love on that album!

Ja, seeing as 'funny noises' is basically my #1 consideration for what I like in music, LL was pretty much spot on in recommending it to me.

Basically I'm just bullshitting and don't know enough about cumbia to make lots of recommendations. Most cumbia that is at least a little electric tends to sound trippy to me. The cumbia villera of people like Yerba Brava often sounds that way to me. And older example would be something like Jaime Llano Gonzalez's "Cumbia en Azul," of an obscure compilation called The Rough Guide to Cumbia. (The copies of this song on youtube are all slowed down in an exaggerated way.)

I prefer cumbia from Lucho Gatica through the 60s and 70s and then some later stuff mostly by Colombian bands; then cumbia villera and tribal guarachero if we're counting that. Like I love most of the cumbia I find on 70s compilations of songs that were popular in Colombia. I think La Lechera has more appreciation for more roots cumbia than I do, and likes some more recent indie sorts of projects.

As far as more recent self-consciously indie cumbia, I like some Grupo Fantasma (esp. the Sonidos Gold album).

Yay, we agree. Also, I think I made your taste in cumbia sound narrower than it is. If anything I envy the fact that you like the really early recordings as much as you do. This is so slow and so perfect that to me something like this is kind of trippy even minus lots of effects and so forth:

Incidentally, La Lechera, if you didn't figure it out from the hint I put on the Rangda thread, I'm the one who sent that Zazen Boys recommendation. I didn't realize it would come out anonymous. I am probably stretching a bit comparing them to Rangda, but I do think you might like them, especially their latest album, Stories.

Oh! Ok, glad that's cleared up -- I was confused. It's on spotify so I'll give it a chance. They do have a song called "Potato Salad" so whether I'll like it is anyone's guess ;)
