the dude has mental stage presence as well.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

it's sort of a combination of him doing the robot and playing an invisible theremin to the music.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

HE IS HELLA WEIRD.

the guitar player makes chipmunk faces during jamage parts....its annoying.

kurt broder (dr g), Friday, 7 October 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

dean yr saying u dont hear the PiL????

cause i do...only it's later PiL...it's weird that people would say "wilderness" and "second editon"....when they should be saying "wilderness" and "9"

this sounds a little like u2 fronted by a david byrne impersonator (marginal over) except with more 'rock' drumming, with lots of open hihats (not a plus!); maybe itd be better if they let the drummer be as MATH as he seems to want to be? throw this one on the postpunk revival pile; i get none of the menace of PiL or grandeur of DI from this, just a half-assed epicness.

I did buy this cd btw.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Friday, 13 January 2006 20:54 (twenty years ago)

saw them last night, one of those shows that wasn't a disaster, yet disappointing enough somehow to make me likely never to play the album again. and i liked the album. but i don't like the singer. he mocked new york city at the end of the set, how rock is that

gregor vox (Gregor Vox), Saturday, 14 January 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Aren't they from the Boston area? Mocking NYC is people from Boston do. Get over yerself.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 14 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

they are from baltimore.

one year passes...

Being stuck in summer weather this late in december has had a totally fucked effect on my listening patterns. Wilderness just seems so right these past few weeks, but I can't find any information about any forthcoming records seeing as how their site is down. Anybody heard anything promising lately or are these guys history?

Wilderness are playing a few west coast dates starting tonight:

4/10/08 -- San Francisco, CA @ 12 Galaxies w/ Scout Niblett
4/11/08 -- Modesto, CA @ Cafe Deva (1202 J St.) w/ Trees & Vines
4/12/08 -- Los Angeles, CA @ Spaceland w/ Scout Niblett, film projections by artist Charles Long
4/14/08 -- San Diego, CA @ The Casbah w/ Kill Me Tomorrow.

Here's an official news update from Jagjaguwar, which has a link to a clip of their recent performance with Charles Long at the Whitney Biennial.

New album on the way, apparently! I really liked the self-titled record and thought Vessel States was OK, not nearly as striking as the first one. But yeah, color me curious about the new material! I plan to be at the SF show tonight.

Too similar in tone and style and pacing to the first one, for me. But yeah, I'm curious about new material, too.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 16:27 (seventeen years ago)

REALLY? i thought they had broken up. was listening to the first album just this weekend. amazing.

cutty, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

I've listened to it a couple of times now and I like it. The song where the Journey-ish bg vocals come in was good and also lol-inducing.

the guitarist's solo project LORD DOG BIRD is v v v v different and waaaay better.

What song from the second album were you referring to? Weird, 'cause the P4K review of the third album mentions "keening backing vocals (which, somewhat disconcertingly, recall Journey's Steve Perry)." If I had to pick a current band to be "The New Journey," Wilderness wouldn't be it.

everything they've done is dope, if a little same-y.

this band should be much bigger. and they need a new album, pronto.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 6 November 2010 00:42 (fifteen years ago)

I love this band especially the self titled despite my problem with bands with forced-sounding vocal weirdness.

I will always think of you, while (quite) fondly, myself (Evan), Monday, 8 November 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 22:40 (eleven years ago)

he sounds kind of like David Byrne crossed with Fred Schneider

Poliopolice, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 22:41 (eleven years ago)

lol had you never heard this before? I think John Lydon mid-80s PIL is the cleanest comparison vocal-wise.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 22:52 (eleven years ago)

I hadn't heard it before but I liked some of the bands referred to in the opening post so I thought I'd check it out. Can't say it reminds me too much of the bands mentioned, to be honest. The U2 touchpoint mentioned above seemed more fitting; I can at least hear some elements of U2 in this. I wasn't familiar with 80s PIL, but I'm listening to that now, and it's not a bad reference for the vocals. I do find the singing very distracting with this musical backdrop though... like I said, it almost sounds like he's parodying something.

Poliopolice, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 00:53 (eleven years ago)

i was also unfamiliar with wilderness. listening to the 1st album now, they kinda sound like kitchens of distinction fronted by david yow. jmtc

cock chirea, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 01:49 (eleven years ago)

I'm so glad I clicked on this post yesterday because Wilderness was one of my favorite bands of the late aughts and I always wondered what became of them. Liminal Fields is lit. Terrific cover art, too.
