Oh cool, I missed that (and, really, wasn't expecting anyone else to even have repped for it).

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 12 December 2012 23:24 (thirteen years ago)

Had no idea Susanna Hoffs released a record this year.

Also, "Cartoons and Cereal" not making the album proper (and "Compton" being on there) will probably be the very thing that keeps Kendrick outta my own top 10.

Okay, with nominations closing on January 6, that's about three and a half weeks for nominations. I had originally planned to open voting on Monday the 7th and close it on Friday the 18th (which is two 5-day work weeks and one weekend for voting), but is that enough time for voting? Should the nominations period be short and voting longer? However we split it up, voting needs to end on the 18th. Let us know.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 December 2012 01:38 (thirteen years ago)

Nominations period might sound long, but a lot of people are going to be busy over the holidays. And people can always think about what they're going to vote for during noms. So I'd keep it as you have it, myself.

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:09 (thirteen years ago)

i think shorter nom period and longer voting period is prob a good idea. a lot of what people want nominated will get taken care of well before the 6th but it's good to have a decent-sized window for voting imo. xpost

some dude, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

Fight!

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

agree with some dude here

The Reverend, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

I only ask because seandalai informed me that he'll be too busy to do any data crunching come February (which won't be a problem, because this has always happened, at least in the post-musically era, the last two weeks of January). Last year, nominations were open for a month and voting lasted two weeks and we got plenty of participation. The year before, we had three weeks of noms and three weeks of voting with only a negligible uptick in ballots. Perhaps I should've opened the thread earlier for nominations, but I'm still thinking 3.5 weeks of noms and then 12 days for voting sounds reasonable. As emily pointed out, a lot of people are going to be busy over the holidays, so the longer nominations period makes more sense.

Anyway, it's still early enough to resplit the timeframe in one way or the other. I just wanted to refresh everyone's memory on how it's gone down the last two years.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 December 2012 02:54 (thirteen years ago)

Just noticed that LeRooLeRoo nominated Beach House - Myth under albums, but that's the name of the first track, not the name of the album

Dan S, Thursday, 13 December 2012 04:59 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, hm...I wonder that was an intended vote for the album or for the track.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 December 2012 05:00 (thirteen years ago)

I just changed it to Bloom, assuming it was an album vote. If this isn't the case, it needs to be added to the tracks spreadsheet when that arrives.

Speaking of which, anyone want to start compiling Spotify playlists?

I just created a collaborative one for tracks, working from this point upward. I can't do the whole thing because I need to go to bed, but if anyone else wants to jump in, then feel free.

Dev - The Night The Sun Came Up

this is eligible? wiki says it was released in sep '11. (i ask b/c if it IS eligible i'm rearranging all my lists to make room for it, what a surprisingly awesome album.)

that voices from the lake track is going to be my #1 probably, so simple but incredibly effective

i <3 that album but i don't know if isolating any track from it would make sense to me

lex pretend, Thursday, 13 December 2012 08:51 (thirteen years ago)

Scott Walker - Epizootics!

thanks, can't believe i forgot to nom this.

Re: shortening the noms window, I will def be using the period from Dec 26th to Jan 3rd to catch up on all the 2012 music I missed. So please don't bring the shutters down before 3rd. The length of the voting window is not an issue for me, so long as it covers at least one weekend.

emil.y, Thursday, 13 December 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

Just noticed this from Tuomas's nominations:

Laurie Spiegel - The Expanding Universe (this is technically a reissue from the 1970s, but 50% of it is material that's never been released before, so I think it should qualify)

This is still technically a reissue. As cool as it is (and it's COOL), I think it falls outside the just about the only rule I've set regarding eligibility.

Okay, but can we still nominate some of the never-released-before tracks from it for the tracks poll?

Tuomas, Thursday, 13 December 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

Albums

Can - The Lost Tapes

this is eligible, right?

silverfish, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:02 (thirteen years ago)

Previously unheard Spiegel tracks are okay.

The Lost Tapes is eligible.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

I seem to have had a particularly DIY/indie/punx0r year in 2012. Struggling to call up any of the weird/world/experimental/electronic stuff that seems to usually make up a large proportion of my ballot.

Lex, The Night The Sun Came Up got a U.S. release this year, with a slightly different (and worse) track list, but I'm going to vote for it anyway.

Since "Take Her From You" is my favorite track, they naturally enough left it off the American version, which they also made worse by adding the non-fabulous Fabolous to "Kiss My Lips," deleting "Bass Down Low" altogether, and adding a mediocre Timbaland collabo and a mediocre Enrique Iglesias collabo. But according to Wikip "Take Her From You" is a promo single this year, and it had a video late last year. If there's a Pazz & Jop this year it's on my singles ballot. So's "In My Trunk," for which there was a video this year which makes it eligible even though Dev makes videos more often than I make blogposts.

Frank Kogan, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:05 (thirteen years ago)

(I wouldn't worry too much about "eligibility." If people think something is too old, they won't vote for it.)

Frank Kogan, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:07 (thirteen years ago)

By the way, I've never been able to parse the lyrics to "Take Her From You," since the identity of the "you" keeps shifting.

Frank Kogan, Thursday, 13 December 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

This Clyde Carson track "Slow Down" is fantastic, and I'd never heard it before starting the spotify list.
