because i still really love that. it's not perfect but alston's a talent to watch and there are three or four jams there.

tamia had a new album? is it worth checking out to pick the best songs from it? secret affection for her based on 'so into you' and 'officially missing you (remix)' and the fact that she's canadian.

not "three or four jams", the opening run of six is flawless

xp yeah, pity, not quality. I've listened to that album a ton over the year, and while I've never completely loved it as a whole (it didn't make any of my lists this year, and not just b/c technically it came out last year), I'm always amazed at how different tracks jump out and click with me at different times. Wonderful singer, with a command of a lot of different moods.

xp sorry - i wasn't counting the intro because it's like half a song? if it were a whole song it would be one of the best.

it just feels 'intro-y' to me somehow, but this is a silly thing to fight about.

That Tank verse is the highlight for me. Wish that guy went as hard on his albums as he does on his guest spots

Alt(ernative) R&B: Did I coin the term? I was stumping for it in 2000. It seemed obvious. I don't think we (AllMusic) made it a descriptor until '05/'06, though. Don't think it gained traction in the office until I cited There's a Riot Goin' On and PM Dawn and ranted about neo-soul (a shrewd marketing term).

would love a Maura-Trey round table.

Trey Songz is always really elegant speaking on that subject; he's great at defending traditional R&B w/o advocating a purity test or abasing singers who do go pop.

I do wish I liked his last album more, though. I can barely make it through that thing, and this coming from somebody who devoured his last mixtape

Also Maura's piece is very good; love that it doesn't force an easy narrative on a year that can't be summed up by one

yeah Trey has a good head on his shoulders, wish i could've done a better interview w/ him a couple years ago than a rushed 10 minute phoner allows for. definitely pretty frustratingly flawed output despite his faithfulness to R&B, though.

The remaster and added touches makes it sound as gorgeous as his other albums + the songs are still great + there's less Casha. I have no idea why you guys like to pretend like it's a bad album. It has held up waaaaaaaaaay better than the Weeknd ones.
