I prefer it too. This one gets a bit shrieky, although the last 50 seconds are gold.

chuuuch
― r|t|c, Monday, 3 December 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
tried hard with that tamia lp but i couldnt make it happen
an extra 20% songwriting & production oomph and she's still got jams in her tho
― r|t|c, Monday, 3 December 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
Disappointed that Melanie Fiona is a non-contender in most year-end coverage. It wasn't perfect or anything, but that album really got overlooked
― Evan R, Monday, 3 December 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)
Encouraged that Miguel is placing so well, though. He's really right up there in a lot of these lists
― Evan R, Monday, 3 December 2012 17:50 (thirteen years ago)
latterly i've been really reminded how strong the jade alston mixtape from the start of the year is
― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 3 December 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)
that poor release received almost zero traction outside of this thread. excited to hear what else Alston has in her though; that tape suggested a lot of satisfying directions she could explore
― Evan R, Monday, 3 December 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)
"sober" got a very charming video

non-dawn, non-miguel 2012 POX

― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 3 December 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)
evan - poor release was a statement of pity, not quality, right?
because i still really love that. it's not perfect but alston's a talent to watch and there are three or four jams there.
tamia had a new album? is it worth checking out to pick the best songs from it? secret affection for her based on 'so into you' and 'officially missing you (remix)' and the fact that she's canadian.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 3 December 2012 21:57 (thirteen years ago)
not "three or four jams", the opening run of six is flawless
― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 3 December 2012 22:03 (thirteen years ago)
xp yeah, pity, not quality. I've listened to that album a ton over the year, and while I've never completely loved it as a whole (it didn't make any of my lists this year, and not just b/c technically it came out last year), I'm always amazed at how different tracks jump out and click with me at different times. Wonderful singer, with a command of a lot of different moods.
― Evan R, Monday, 3 December 2012 22:14 (thirteen years ago)
xp sorry - i wasn't counting the intro because it's like half a song? if it were a whole song it would be one of the best.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 3 December 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)
it's three-and-a-half minutes long!
― #YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 3 December 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)
fine. i don't know why we are arguing about it. i've spent most of the year periodically raving about it. haha.
it just feels 'intro-y' to me somehow, but this is a silly thing to fight about.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 3 December 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)
anyway, i'm listening to the coline creuzot EP now. You and I'm Done are the standouts on first listen.
― twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 3 December 2012 22:33 (thirteen years ago)
quite like this omarion mixtape, this is the standout on first listen

That Tank verse is the highlight for me. Wish that guy went as hard on his albums as he does on his guest spots

also jamming this off the lyrica anderson tape discussed earlier. hook is undeniable

tank album was not great but not too bad judging by some of the other free passes handed out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwobN0T3nyk
he's kinda digging out a male loverman niche stanbase version of what keyshia's doing
still, who cares it's only tank tbh
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
really like the omarion tape. not as much as late nights, but it's really good.

I'm not sure where to post Brandon Soderbergh's Alt R&B essay published in SPIN.

I may have missed it but did anyone mention Wish's Me Against Her mixtape? It's not perfect but it does contain a few jams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wgc4yS3CNE

Alt(ernative) R&B: Did I coin the term? I was stumping for it in 2000. It seemed obvious. I don't think we (AllMusic) made it a descriptor until '05/'06, though. Don't think it gained traction in the office until I cited There's a Riot Goin' On and PM Dawn and ranted about neo-soul (a shrewd marketing term).

― the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 December 2012 20:52 (thirteen years ago)
Trey Songz is always really elegant speaking on that subject; he's great at defending traditional R&B w/o advocating a purity test or abasing singers who do go pop.
I do wish I liked his last album more, though. I can barely make it through that thing, and this coming from somebody who devoured his last mixtape
― Evan R, Thursday, 13 December 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)
Also Maura's piece is very good; love that it doesn't force an easy narrative on a year that can't be summed up by one
― Evan R, Thursday, 13 December 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)
yeah Trey has a good head on his shoulders, wish i could've done a better interview w/ him a couple years ago than a rushed 10 minute phoner allows for. definitely pretty frustratingly flawed output despite his faithfulness to R&B, though.
