We had a dance party at my Uncle's house on Thanksgiving. I put on Gangnam Style and all my little pre-teen cousins were doing the dance move for it. It was pretty funny.

Kill those fucking Yankees who ordered them to torture
Kill their daughters, mothers, daughters-in-law and fathers
Kill them all slowly and painfully

this is amazing and awesome

Yeah, but it's a lot more innocuous in its original Korean.

Starting the conversation!

Milton Parker, Friday, 7 December 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

Ok, I'm not ready to call bullshit on this with 100% certainty, since it's possible some of this story is true—anti-American sentiment is rampant, and I can't find much information on Psy's 2002 performances—but the account of his 2004 rap is so poorly sourced right now that I can't believe credible media outlets are reporting it.

Reports insist that Korean media has known about this story for a long time. I can't confirm that, because I don't speak Korean (I suspect most American reporters writing about this don't either), but from what I see, all the Korean outlets linked to as a source are citing this CNN iReport from October:

http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-853509

It's written in broken English by a user who cites no sources, doesn't give his or her name, and has never written anything else for iReport. It's essentially an anonymous comment on a message board, and as best as I can tell without speaking Korean, all reports about the "fucking Yankees" rap eventually link back to it.

Evan R, Friday, 7 December 2012 21:31 (thirteen years ago)

this is much better (and much better-sourced) article http://busanhaps.com/article/exclusive-psys-once-passionate-protesting-past

max, Friday, 7 December 2012 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

No, it's not. All of the links it cites as evidence for the 2004 incident all eventually link back to that same shady iReport.

Evan R, Friday, 7 December 2012 21:35 (thirteen years ago)

uh? http://www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-26840321_ITM

max, Friday, 7 December 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

oh sorry missed 2004 in your post

max, Friday, 7 December 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

i stand by my assertion that its a much better and much better sourced article

max, Friday, 7 December 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

Ah, shit, according to MTV Psy just apologized for the incident, which basically confirms the story. Still doesn't forgive the reckless sourcing by American media outlets up til now, but the story was true

Evan R, Friday, 7 December 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

The MTV story mentions there is still some lack of clarity over the exact words he used at the time.

Oddly, I remember that exact Korea Times article from 2002.

Aww, now there's an apology :(

http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/gangnam-style-rapper-performing-at-christmas-in-washington

“As a proud South Korean who was educated in the United States and lived there for a very significant part of my life, I understand the sacrifices American servicemen and women have made to protect freedom and democracy in my country and around the world. The song I featured on in question from eight years ago – was part of a deeply emotional reaction to the war in Iraq and the killing of two Korean schoolgirls that was part of the overall antiwar sentiment shared by others around the world at that time. While I’m grateful for the freedom to express one's self, I’ve learned there are limits to what language is appropriate and I’m deeply sorry for how these lyrics could be interpreted. I will forever be sorry for any pain I have caused by those words.

“I have been honored to perform in front of American soldiers in recent months – including an appearance on the Jay Leno show specifically for them- and I hope they and all Americans can accept my apology. While it’s important that we express our opinions, I deeply regret the inflammatory and inappropriate language I used to do so. In my music, I try to give people a release, a reason to smile. I have learned that thru music, our universal language we can all come together as a culture of humanity and I hope that you will accept my apology."

so did an american tank actually kill a few kids and that's what led to this response?
because I'm trying to imagine a korean tank running over a few four year olds in Wyoming and what Blake Shelton might do with that.

Oh, justice will be served and the battle will rage:
This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage.
An' you'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A.
'Cos we'll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way.

Hey, Uncle Sam put your name at the top of his list,
And the Statue of Liberty started shaking her fist.
And the eagle will fly and it's gonna be hell,
When you hear Mother Freedom start ringing her bell.
And it'll feel like the whole wide world is raining down on you.
Ah, brought to you, courtesy of the red, white and blue.

This song is still enormous with my son and all his 8-year-old friends that he brings over. They listen to it on repeat every time they take over my house. I'll be interested to see if this rap/scandal/apology filters back to me through them.

This ain't no rag it's a flag
And we don't wear it on our heads
It's a symbol of the land where the good guys live
Are you listening to what I said
You're a coward and a fool
And you broke all of the rules
And you wounded our American pride

And now we're coming with a gun
And we know you're gonna run
But you can't find no place to hide
We're gonna hunt you down like a mad dog hound
Make you pay for the lives you stole
We're all through talking and a messing around
And now it's time to rock and roll
