damn, where is that new maxwell record. he sounds great there.

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

he acted like the album (or at least the single) was coming this year but then he cancelled his summer tour due to vocal hemorrhaging, so i'm hoping he's just waiting until his voice is better to be able to promote/tour for the new record

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

would far prefer Keyshia Cole singing this collab instead of Alicia Keys

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

ehhhhhh keys/maxwell is just a more compatible mix of voices

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i agree... keyshia + maxwell would sound really weird

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

A physical match perhaps, but she can't feel an emotion without getting overwrought.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

alfred you're pushing your weird anti-keys agenda pretty hard

乒乓, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

a duet of keyshia and trey songz yelling at each other would be pretty entertaining -- apparently he was announced at some point as a guest for her new album but obv didn't happen

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

I've liked a couple things. Her last bit on this one made me wonder why Maxwell couldn't have let that guitar do the emoting.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

ok dude

乒乓, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:17 (thirteen years ago)

the Meryl Streep of R&B songstresses

there are actually a couple of songs on the new keyshia where she is...kinda understated! nearly fell off my chair.

keys might seem overwrought because she tends towards the vague and non-specific in her songwriting, but at her best this just means she's astonishingly good at conveying grandly nebulous universals.

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

i'm a fan of that song but it's a little lol for your to gravitate to something so los/terius-ish

― some dude, Tuesday, November 20, 2012 5:06 PM (2 hours ago)

kind of lol but mostly duh

liljon /bia/ bia (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

q parker song is very good. totally a "bed" rip off it but fuck it

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

there can never be enough "bed" ripoffs

liljon /bia/ bia (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 01:44 (thirteen years ago)

lol at "alicia keys is overwrought, not like that keyshia cole!"

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 03:05 (thirteen years ago)

This might actually be my biggest disappointment of the year? I was so eager.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

never believe anything an artists says about an album ever

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 05:00 (thirteen years ago)

especially r&b artists. just look at brainwasher's list in the first post of this thread every year

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 08:55 (thirteen years ago)

wellllllll yeah but there's a difference between the "i made 30 songs already but the label doesn't hear a hit" vs. a guy who goes platinum every time around having voice problems

some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

although lol "Cassie (this will happen)"

some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

"Cassie (this will happen)" was lol at the time

also just noticed:

The opening posts on these threads seem immediately sad to me now. It's like when a mid-tier character in a film or tv show suddenly gets a lot of screen time in preparation for their impending, sudden killing-off.

:(

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:44 (thirteen years ago)

over half the artists on that list actually did drop albums or will by the end of 2012 though! that's actually a pretty high number

some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:48 (thirteen years ago)

particularly :( about k michelle, tiffany evans, timothy bloom and, perpetually, cici

estelle was prob the best album that did get released that no one apart from me thought was any good :(

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago)

haha brains' yearly lists of no-marks are my favourite thing, have often considered compiling and polling

i guess it depends on whether u think of modern r&b as melodrama or slasher film

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:57 (thirteen years ago)

Melodramatic slasher films, perhaps?

weak willie (longneck), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i was trying to think of one of those

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:07 (thirteen years ago)

some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:08 (thirteen years ago)

So the dream album isn't coming out this yeah huh

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:17 (thirteen years ago)

well he's re-releasing 1977 with new songs in December

some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:18 (thirteen years ago)

乒乓, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:23 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I heard

I think he's over at this point

Raymond Cummings, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 12:27 (thirteen years ago)

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

knew that was coming

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:40 (thirteen years ago)

I'm still kicking around R&B tracks for a mix I make each year. Some of the non-Miguel/Dawn ones I've settled on:

Warms The Soul - Rocki Evans
Live Without Her - Timothy Bloom
Late Nights - Jeremih
Heart Attack - Trey Songz
Moments - Bei Maejor
Co-Sign - SWV
Won't Find Me - Tiffany Evans

And then I'm torn about which Usher to include. "Climax" (too obvious), "What Happened To U" and "Say The Words" are all really choice options

Evan R, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:47 (thirteen years ago)

ooh can we count "won't find me" as 2012? can we? i fucking love it

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

Late Nights - Jeremih

^this is prob top-5 of the year for me, any genre

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

I figured what the hell w/ that Tiffany Evans track, nobody will know. Same with that SWV track, which was kind of 2011 in my mind. It's no fun if you can't bend the rules

Evan R, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:54 (thirteen years ago)

by all means feel free to scrape any barrels available

r|t|c, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

swv's album was this year though, i think i'd choose "do ya" off it.

a bunch of people i know irl were absolutely captivated by the jeremih mixtape, idgi at all. "fuck u all the time" is aight but it's so insubstantial start to end

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

the tiff evans is sooooo not barrel-scraping. better than any given hyped r&b act you can name

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

jeremih mixtape is my no 3 album of the year after miguel & frank

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

Did Miguel end up pulling ahead of Frank for you?
