still hear "Hold On My Heart."

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

than you'd guess rather

balls, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

"We Can't Dance" isn't bad. It just so happens that the title track is pretty much the worst thing the band ever did.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:25 (thirteen years ago)

...But Seriously was the #2 album of 1990 here and one of the biggest sellers ever in England.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:26 (thirteen years ago)

I would hear the title track, Jesus He Knows Me and No Son Of Mine the odd time.

Master of Treacle, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

woah i do still hear 'hold on my heart', which is something cuz it wasn't nearly as big a hit as 'no son of mine' or 'i can't dance' or even 'jesus he knows me', it might have something to do w/ being a much much better song than the other we can't dance hits. seems like 'i can't dance' might've been a tipping point for phil.

balls, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

"Something Happened On the Way to Heaven" easily

some dude, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:28 (thirteen years ago)

'No Son Of Mine' is easily better than any of the songs in this poll!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

no it isn't!

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

actually "Hold On..." was almost as big as "No Son of Mine" (both top fifteen, the former #1 AC) and much bigger than "Jesus" (which peaked in the top thirty).

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:30 (thirteen years ago)

and it's true: even at the time I heard "Hold On My Heart" a lot more than "I Can't Dance" (the only top ten).

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

and as far as he fell from his 80s heights (as did bruce and prince and even mj eventually - only madonna really managed to maintain hot 100 relevance into this century) he still kept having adult contemporary hits for a while longer and up to the end had chart topping albums in the uk.

balls, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

In terms of commercial Phil-led Genesis We Can't Dance could be a New Jersey.

Calling All Stations and PC leaving seems to suggest this

Master of Treacle, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

aack i read chart wrong on 'hold on my heart'.

balls, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

From a UK perspective, WCD was a very big deal

Master of Treacle, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:36 (thirteen years ago)

You can thank Genesis for a mind-boggling stat: every album til WCD they released outsold its predecessor in England.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

yeah afaik they're still the kings of this thread: artists who had a long streak of every album selling more than the last

some dude, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)

no it isn't!

Yes it is!

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 22:43 (thirteen years ago)

No it isn't!

"Another Day in Paradise" for supreme Shopping Mall Miserablism

Andy K, Monday, 19 November 2012 23:35 (thirteen years ago)

The hell with it. Voting "Another Day in Paradise".

jetfan, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 02:51 (thirteen years ago)

I Wish It Would Rain Down, with maybe my favorite early 90s Clapton

that's the way to choke a jiving spirit (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 06:05 (thirteen years ago)

I was obssessed with Another Day in Paradise as a child. I don't know what I thought he sang instead of blisters in the line "she's got blisters on the soles of her feet"; like, maybe "the shiz"...? I asked my mom what that meant, "the shiz on the soles of her feet".

That was probably one of her first heads' up that I was going to turn out a very strange individual.

Something Happened On The Way To Heaven

da croupier, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 07:10 (thirteen years ago)

"Something Happened On the Way to Heaven" s one of the three or four of Phil's solo jamz u really need.

After Cease To Exist Button (King Boy Pato), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 09:54 (thirteen years ago)

Haven't seen it but I like to imagine the video of Something Happened... being a band performance thing with the musicians being really into it, grinning at each other across the stage and joining in with the "How many times" bit, even if they're not near a microphone. Gets my vote.

Supposed Former ILM Lurker (WeWantMiles), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 10:13 (thirteen years ago)

Adored Groovy Kind of Love as a kid.

yeah, maybe I'm still hearing it through my childhood ears, but it still sounds alright to me. the mood in beginning is rather beautiful - it has a feeling I think Collins was really kind of the best at. could probably do without the strings arrangments further into it though.

Chris S, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 10:30 (thirteen years ago)

I can't quite go for "Something Happened..." because of Collins' pitch.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:01 (thirteen years ago)

I used to love the little melody that played in the breaks in "Another Day In Paradise" and the cover by Euro-dance act Jamtronix too. This was when I was about 9 though.

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:22 (thirteen years ago)

Two Hearts = One More Night played to the beat of Can't Hurry Love, no?

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:23 (thirteen years ago)

i am surprised at how many crumby Phil Collins songs I know. There must have been one on every Now! compilation ever released from 1981-1993

make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:33 (thirteen years ago)

Probably be alone in this but I voted for Who Said I Would. Don't like any of these songs AT ALL, but that one at least has some sort of demented energy to it - maniacal gremlin stomp will always beat goofy Phil. Also there is some sort of (fake?) marimba thing going on right at the start that is actually kind of pretty, reminds me a bit of San Jacinto.

Albert Crampus (NickB), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)

I am entirely too familiar with these songs due to my dad being a major Collins stan and his albums being the soundtrack to about 65% of car journeys I made with my family while growing up. I can recall each and every moment of all of these, much to my dismay.

"Two Hearts" is the one be least unhappy to listen to now. Might have to vote for "Another Day in Paradise" though, because it's one of the most cringeworthy I CARE ABOUT IMPORTANT ISSUES!!! songs ever penned. Also the only one to be covered by a Spice Girl, AFAIK.

bizarro gazzara, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 12:42 (thirteen years ago)

video for Something Happened on the Way to Heaven is Phil and band at practice space through the eyes of a dog who is just hangin around the premises iirc

that's the way to choke a jiving spirit (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

yes, classic vid

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

8 year old me was like "this phil collins fellow seems pretty cool, he's got a band and a dog and everything"

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

"and he's got a dog that responded to the song much like I did!"

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

Did the dog try and chew his own ears off in distress y/n?

Albert Crampus (NickB), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

Dog peed on his foot iirc

"Something Happened On The Way To Heaven" is actually pretty great until it hits the chorus

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:43 (thirteen years ago)

^^ I'd say it's merely pretty good but yeah otm

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

I haven't heard the live version of "Who Said I Would." I'm assuming it's the same as the original (which also boasted kalimba) except...live?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, interesting. I didn't know "Groovy Kind of Love" was a cover.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:48 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, I knew it was a Clementi rip but I didn't know the pop song itself was written in the 60s.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)

"Something Happened..." is sort of a rewrite of "No Reply At All," but inferior. Though you take what you can get at this point.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

I used to sing "Wish You Were Here" over the chorus of "I Wish It Would Rain Down"; if I'd recorded it I could have been a mashup pioneer along with Pet Shop Boys

I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

Man, I'm stoked to see this much love for "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven!" I have a very clear memory of having it stuck in my head in the front foyer/entry area of my elementary school, waiting for my ride home at the end of the day - must have been in third grade.

We Can't Dance and ...But Seriously were both heavily discussed in the New Jersey thread; otoh it was much more ridiculously successful that you'd guess by its presence today is a key determinant of New Jersey status.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

Is it wrong to love "It's In The Way That You Use It"? It and "Forever Man" are the only eighties Clapton I can stand.

Clapton not even trying here, as per the '80s. And much of his career. But plenty of Phil, Live Aid MVP:

Is that "Groovy Kind of Love?"

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 04:34 (thirteen years ago)

that's kinda how this is

liljon /bia/ bia (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 04:36 (thirteen years ago)

I wonder what other Phil-related polls that ILX can come up with...

TS: The Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight vs. Genesis - Tonight Tonight Tonight

or maybe... the ILX homelessness extravaganza!

Paul Simon - Homeless vs. Phil Collins - Another Day In Paradise vs. Pet Shop Boys - The Theatre

The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Tuesday, 27 November 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

Surely Sting and Bruce have some of those?

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

TS: Phil Collins's "Both Sides of the Story" vs. Wyclef Jean's The Eclectic: 2 Sides II A Book

late 90s lol

some dude, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

omg

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

i seriously never noticed that, and i am someone who has repped on ILX for "It Doesn't Matter (feat. the Rock)"

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 18:48 (thirteen years ago)

apparently i wasn't the only one either: How many times can you vote in the best Wyclef Jean single poll?

The Battle Of The Baldies!

Phil Collins vs Billy Corgan vs Michael Stipe vs Sinead O'Connor vs Moby vs Future Neil Tennant vs Joe Satriani vs Midge Ure vs David Draiman from Disturbed

That's like the bizarro world Prince's Trust line-up.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 27 November 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

Was going to add the obligatory Bone Thugs/Phil Collins video, but it seems to be off of YouTube.
