fucking gentrified r&b bullshit

Ha, according to the wiki page MJ has a writing credit, so that is probably him doing the growl and not CB.

Sounds like CB mimicking MJ's growl with sampled MJ echoing him.

Dream/Los song on the new Keyshia Cole > both Dream/Los songs on the new Rihanna

I have no problem with AlunaGeorge. Inc seem kinda preposterous.

Andy K, Monday, 19 November 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

link the keyshia one?

chief beef (k3vin k.), Monday, 19 November 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

heard some inc. tracks today and i kind of liked them. they have skeletons of really good tracks imo but the production & singing are so thin... i couldn't imagine anyone who actively listens to 'real' r&b jamming this shit. just makes me want to listen to urban hang suite or w/e.

i think they're better than alunageorge, for whatever that's worth

RAISE YOUR STANDARDS OF ENJOYMENT

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Monday, 19 November 2012 17:09 (thirteen years ago)

essentially what i'm saying is that it all sounds very demo-y. sometimes demos can be good! if it's your whole aesthetic tho then that's a problem but it's not like i can't recognize the makings of a good song and/or still get some enjoyment out of something that i think still could be much better. i don't think those are warring ideas.

in any event i'm really not insulted by inc. whatsoever. in fact as far as indie r&b goes they're actually at least doing something slightly different opposed to all this druggy post-cassie dubstep remix-wave. like i could imagine a live band playing those inc. tracks.

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Monday, 19 November 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

fell in love with the weeknd, started fucking the inc...

Evan R, Monday, 19 November 2012 17:19 (thirteen years ago)

man inc's name is so disrespectful to irv gotti, rip

K3v Ink (some dude), Monday, 19 November 2012 17:23 (thirteen years ago)

what is going on with this wiz rap

乒乓, Monday, 19 November 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

Was gonna rep for Brenmar's remix of AlunaGeorge's "Just a Touch", but just had another listen and decided it's not really worth it.

Mercer Finn, Monday, 19 November 2012 23:53 (thirteen years ago)

so far i think this keyshia cole album has more songs i'm feeling on it than in keyshia cole's entire career to date

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, this keyshia cole album is superb

Evan R, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

in a lot of ways this is what I wanted the Monica album to be

Evan R, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:05 (thirteen years ago)

yeah girl went in

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

has anyone checked out Rochelle Jordan? She's from Toronto and did a Marvins Room cover AGES ago and has two releases under her belt now - R O J O and PRESSURE - both of which are pretty listenable.

I'm not sure how lex will feel about them (some moments are a bit drifty) but it's worth a listen. Start with PRESSURE, maybe? It's the more recent one. R O J O has some nice stuff though, and her single "Here I Go" was also pretty solid.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:16 (thirteen years ago)

ooooh - new Keyshia is worth checking for? I love her first album but haven't really loved much since besides a single or two.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:17 (thirteen years ago)

i heard pressure, thought it was nice enough in a non-committal way, but idk we have jhené aiko for sub-cassiefanclub action these days

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

oh wow i hadn't seen this ~dramatic~ keyshia cole video

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

Sorry to steer the convo away from Keyshia at a time when she actually deserves the attention, but hot damn, this Alicia Keys/Maxwell debut:

heard this on the radio today and it pleased meh, q parker of 112 with a sort of "falsetto" update

liljon /bia/ bia (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 21:55 (thirteen years ago)

i'm a fan of that song but it's a little lol for your to gravitate to something so los/terius-ish

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

this ll/joe song is awesome

yeah I'm surprised that "superb" and a Keyshia Cole album are in the same sentence (I just liked her first). Will check out.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

damn, where is that new maxwell record. he sounds great there.

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

he acted like the album (or at least the single) was coming this year but then he cancelled his summer tour due to vocal hemorrhaging, so i'm hoping he's just waiting until his voice is better to be able to promote/tour for the new record

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

would far prefer Keyshia Cole singing this collab instead of Alicia Keys

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

ehhhhhh keys/maxwell is just a more compatible mix of voices

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i agree... keyshia + maxwell would sound really weird

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)

A physical match perhaps, but she can't feel an emotion without getting overwrought.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

alfred you're pushing your weird anti-keys agenda pretty hard

乒乓, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

a duet of keyshia and trey songz yelling at each other would be pretty entertaining -- apparently he was announced at some point as a guest for her new album but obv didn't happen

some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:13 (thirteen years ago)

alfred you're pushing your weird anti-keys agenda pretty hard

I've liked a couple things. Her last bit on this one made me wonder why Maxwell couldn't have let that guitar do the emoting.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

ok dude

the Meryl Streep of R&B songstresses

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 23:19 (thirteen years ago)

there are actually a couple of songs on the new keyshia where she is...kinda understated! nearly fell off my chair.

keys might seem overwrought because she tends towards the vague and non-specific in her songwriting, but at her best this just means she's astonishingly good at conveying grandly nebulous universals.

kind of lol but mostly duh

liljon /bia/ bia (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

q parker song is very good. totally a "bed" rip off it but fuck it

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 01:19 (thirteen years ago)

there can never be enough "bed" ripoffs

liljon /bia/ bia (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 01:44 (thirteen years ago)

lol at "alicia keys is overwrought, not like that keyshia cole!"

This might actually be my biggest disappointment of the year? I was so eager.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

never believe anything an artists says about an album ever

pussy try it (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 05:00 (thirteen years ago)

especially r&b artists. just look at brainwasher's list in the first post of this thread every year

#YOLO ONO (lex pretend), Wednesday, 21 November 2012 08:55 (thirteen years ago)

wellllllll yeah but there's a difference between the "i made 30 songs already but the label doesn't hear a hit" vs. a guy who goes platinum every time around having voice problems

some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

although lol "Cassie (this will happen)"

some dude, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 11:42 (thirteen years ago)

"Cassie (this will happen)" was lol at the time

also just noticed:

The opening posts on these threads seem immediately sad to me now. It's like when a mid-tier character in a film or tv show suddenly gets a lot of screen time in preparation for their impending, sudden killing-off.
