I have a friend that's a CD only kind of guy and a habitual buyer of compilations. I think he has every one of these.
― owenf, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link
I never owned any myself but those I knew who did tended to be those who never ever bought albums that weren't compilations. They just wanted to buy songs they already knew. I was like that up until I was about 14 but these guys went to gigs, some were in bands and were in their early 20s. It felt strange.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:41 (eleven years ago) link
Honestly don't see the problem with buying compilations of things that you like. That's what they're for.
― studge_siren.gif (onimo), Friday, 16 November 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link
yeah if this was your kinda thing a Shine comp would've been p functionally useful in 1996 or whatever
― Joanna Motorhead (DJ Mencap), Friday, 16 November 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link
There was another similar series entitled "The best ..... Album in the world", again dbl CD and mostly Britpop but they always had a dance element, so they'd chuck on Underworld or Prodigy or Massive Attack as well. I've got two of those in my attic.
― Rob M Revisited, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:52 (eleven years ago) link
I think I have a couple of those.
You see one, think "oh, I like a lot of those", get it and find it's all over-played stuff, so you never play it past the 2nd time..

With hindsight they were useful given how singles-driven Britpop was, ie. instead of shelling out 13 quid for crap/patchy full lengths
― Master of Treacle, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link
you're conflating Britpop with pop music in general

I had (and still have) that SHINE 10, or at least I have a SHINE comp with that tracklisting but I thought it was 5. Anyway, this was from a time when you had to pay for music or at the very least tape stuff from friends. It was worth it to get 5 or 6 good tracks and maybe 5 or 6 more that were pretty good. Rather than, as someone pointed out upthread, shelling out for patchy albums. They are much better than eg. the Big Shiny Tunes series where there is normally only one or two acceptable tracks.
ILM threads where everyone agrees how terrible Britpop was are some of the most boring threads ever btw.

― Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Friday, 16 November 2012 23:07 (eleven years ago) link
I owned the first one on tape. I could only afford about one tape every 6 months so this was good value considering I never heard Suede, Green Day, Elastica or the Smiths on the radio and it introduced me to em. I didn't know what 'indie' was, though.
― kinder, Friday, 16 November 2012 23:15 (eleven years ago) link
Sit Down is always going to be the worst song on any compilation though, as I realised even at that tender age.

who???
They performed this song on Blue Peter.

Weirdly, some guy from that band (the singer, presumably) has a website with a very extensive archive of Ruth information: http://vanitypress.co.uk/intro.php
Here is a track-by-track guide to that single in the video for instance: http://vanitypress.co.uk/alan/5single.html

The ALAN Archive
ALAN was the name of the RUTH fan club, and was originally conceived as a way of having personal contact with fans without having to reply to individual letters, which always leads to trouble.
RUTH fans were known as 'Children of ALAN' and embraced the concept enthusiastically (apart from those who found the whole thing inexplicable and grotesque), especially the correspondance area known as Readers' Wives.

I never owned any Shine compilations but I did buy hundreds of singles by bands featured on there. Garbage, Space, Embrace, Catatonia, Ian Brown, Bernard Butler, Seahorses, Symposium, Shed Seven plus loads of bands that didn't make it on to these albums.
Anyone remember Mum's Gone to Iceland by Bennet?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CtAunxgEP_k
I owned every single they put out. So much money wasted!
There are plenty of bands I still rate highly on there, SFA, Boo Radleys, Mansun, Pulp, Supergrass, Elastica but the shit things I bought outweighed the good.
― Kitchen Person, Monday, 19 November 2012 10:49 (eleven years ago) link
Oh and the first Dubstar album is great as is No More Talk from the second album. Embrace are the worst band mentioned on this thread so far, the fact they made that big comeback in 2004 makes it even worse.

Pretty sure the singer from Ruth went on to be Aqualung.

i think we supported the Heart Throbs one time after caning vodka all day, leading to probably the most fucked-up cover of Nick Drake's "Parasite" ever

Because they were friends of friends, we got to see them at their first gig, supporting Zodiac Mindwarp at the After Dark, Reading. They were excellent already.
I never knew the sisters were actually sisters of Pete Defreitas really.

I have a couple of Indie Top 20s from around the '88-'90 era picked out of bargain bins a decade after that. Maybe it's just because they were from a little before my indie-time, whereas the Shine series was ubiquitous when I thought I knew everything about music already, but the Indie Top 20s seemed a much more interesting prospect, or at least more varied and less crushingly lads-bants-innit
xps what I'd give to hear the fucked-up Nick Drake covers of vodka-addled pre-www ilxors

I never owned a Shine compilation CD, but I know a hell of a lot of people who have owned at least one at some point in the mid to late '90s.

Re: Ruth,
I'm only really familiar with one song of theirs, which was called 'I Don't Know'... I have a very very vague memory of them performing it on The National Lottery(!) - (very very vague because I never actually watched The National Lottery, so chances are it was on in the background while someone else was watching it).
If memory serves one of the guys from Ruth ended up "becoming" Aqualung...
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link
And another bit of trivia: Daf Ieuan, drummer from Super Furry Animals, was a member of Catatonia briefly. He played drums on roughly over half of Way Beyond Blue (including the aforementioned 'Sweet Catatonia') and left to focus on Super Furry Animals.

I thought I'd heard of Ruth bcz I thought they were on a (uhh) Metal Hammer CD I got in 1995, but it turns out to have been a song called "Ruth" by the Wrens, and it is weirding me out that a) the Wrens were on a Metal Hammer CD and b) I didn't realise this until now despite somewhat liking the Wrens a few years after that
(obviously Ruth aren't metal but nor are the Wrens or basically anyone else on the Metal Hammer CD in question)
anyway I have never heard that song before and none of their other song titles ring a bell, but on that evidence 90s Britpop band Ruth < annoying-vocalled 80s French synthpop band Ruth (youtube)

Ruth put me in mind of bands like The Poppyheads who even had a single called 'Wake Up, America'http://s.discogss.com/image/R-1441522-1219962065.jpeg
i'm assuming the Sarah Records Poppyheads are a different band
― 'Separate Lives', by Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson (PaulTMA), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link
I only realised there were two Poppyheads recently. I have multiple singles by the 90s one, they were like a teen Wonder Stuff, definitely not the same as the Sarah records lot.
Sadly it seems this thread was custom made to cover my teen years.
