I bought "Sweet Catatonia" at the time, it was as good as they got.

More evidence to support my claim that the late 90s was the worst era overall in the history of music.

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link
worst song on any of these must be Dubstar. Worst band ever? They were as equally as bad as Toploader.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:42 (eleven years ago) link
nah Dubstar were aight.

― Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:44 (eleven years ago) link
at least toploader fucked off after one atrocity, Dubstar hung around like a bad smell
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:45 (eleven years ago) link
i fail to see what was so terrible about them AG - they had some neat tunes and the lyrics were good and their album covers were kinda funny and their singer was verrry cute and at least they weren't just bland guitar-pop like so much other stuff in the pages of (new) Raw.
― make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link
surprised to find they're still going though... really?
oh god the reinvention of RAW magazine. One Britpop Bible Select was bad enough but we didn't need a shittier fortnightly one.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link
Toploader are still touring now fwiw

I thought they officially split up, announcements, everything.
― Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link
I thought they disappeared after about '97....dunno, thought they were decent, at least singles-wise, hard to see for example how Saint Etienne fans wouldn't take a shine (ho ho) to them
― Master of Treacle, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:50 (eleven years ago) link
(Dubstar, I meant)
Probably one of those bands doing nostagia britpop in a basket tours (toploader)

Didn't Dodgy reform? and of course Northern Uproar are getting fans to finance their 4th album.http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/northernuproar

I bought one on double cassette at aservice station during a long trip. Can't remember what number it was but it was mostly wall to wall Britpop iirc.
I bought another similar compilation on a different trip called something like "True Brit Anthems" that was all Shed Seven and Supergrass and was indistinguishable from a Shine compilation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_%28compilation_series%29
I like how someone decided to go through that page and link every artist and song to their wiki entries then chucked it after the first album.
9 hits for ctrl-f "Shed" on that page. 13 Oasises and 10 Blurs in the Battle of Britpop. 11 Casts.

I cant actually decide which of the shine albums was the worsthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_%28compilation_series%29
Do we judge it on the highest number of worst songs per album or discount that album if it actually has some good songs on it?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link
Shine 1 (which I bought on holiday at about 15), isn't so bad. Fuck the Cranberries though. I didn't even mind the Dodgy song on there either.

I have a friend that's a CD only kind of guy and a habitual buyer of compilations. I think he has every one of these.
― owenf, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:37 (eleven years ago) link
I never owned any myself but those I knew who did tended to be those who never ever bought albums that weren't compilations. They just wanted to buy songs they already knew. I was like that up until I was about 14 but these guys went to gigs, some were in bands and were in their early 20s. It felt strange.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:41 (eleven years ago) link
Honestly don't see the problem with buying compilations of things that you like. That's what they're for.
― studge_siren.gif (onimo), Friday, 16 November 2012 15:46 (eleven years ago) link
yeah if this was your kinda thing a Shine comp would've been p functionally useful in 1996 or whatever
― Joanna Motorhead (DJ Mencap), Friday, 16 November 2012 15:48 (eleven years ago) link
There was another similar series entitled "The best ..... Album in the world", again dbl CD and mostly Britpop but they always had a dance element, so they'd chuck on Underworld or Prodigy or Massive Attack as well. I've got two of those in my attic.
― Rob M Revisited, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:52 (eleven years ago) link
I think I have a couple of those.
You see one, think "oh, I like a lot of those", get it and find it's all over-played stuff, so you never play it past the 2nd time..

With hindsight they were useful given how singles-driven Britpop was, ie. instead of shelling out 13 quid for crap/patchy full lengths
― Master of Treacle, Friday, 16 November 2012 15:59 (eleven years ago) link
you're conflating Britpop with pop music in general

I had (and still have) that SHINE 10, or at least I have a SHINE comp with that tracklisting but I thought it was 5. Anyway, this was from a time when you had to pay for music or at the very least tape stuff from friends. It was worth it to get 5 or 6 good tracks and maybe 5 or 6 more that were pretty good. Rather than, as someone pointed out upthread, shelling out for patchy albums. They are much better than eg. the Big Shiny Tunes series where there is normally only one or two acceptable tracks.
ILM threads where everyone agrees how terrible Britpop was are some of the most boring threads ever btw.

I owned the first one on tape. I could only afford about one tape every 6 months so this was good value considering I never heard Suede, Green Day, Elastica or the Smiths on the radio and it introduced me to em. I didn't know what 'indie' was, though.
― kinder, Friday, 16 November 2012 23:15 (eleven years ago) link
Sit Down is always going to be the worst song on any compilation though, as I realised even at that tender age.
