This was the period where every band released cd1 and cd2 versions of singles where fans had to buy both to get the extra tracks. Its why blur beat oasis to that #1.
what a rip off

oh and the 7" had a different b-side too. And of course the cassingle did too

I recall a few CD3s, too.

Babybird : Bad Old Man
Is that the track title or just a description of Babybird?

It is both.

xposts, yeah but all those tracks made for a quite nice mini album in some cases.
A bunch of cack in others.
― Mark G, Friday, 16 November 2012 14:28 (eleven years ago) link
I had 3cd singles by Orbital that made a nice mini live album.

Space & Cerys Matthews : The Ballad Of Tom Jones
this alone was enough justification for anyone ever involved in indie music to apply the old shotgun to the face.
― Dog the Puffin Hunter (ledge), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:29 (eleven years ago) link
that was one of the worst songs ever made.
― make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:30 (eleven years ago) link

I'm very glad that at 16 I thought music was too serious to be fun, and thus avoided Space.

I bought "Sweet Catatonia" at the time, it was as good as they got.

worst song on any of these must be Dubstar. Worst band ever? They were as equally as bad as Toploader.

i fail to see what was so terrible about them AG - they had some neat tunes and the lyrics were good and their album covers were kinda funny and their singer was verrry cute and at least they weren't just bland guitar-pop like so much other stuff in the pages of (new) Raw.
― make like a steak and beef (dog latin), Friday, 16 November 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link
surprised to find they're still going though... really?
oh god the reinvention of RAW magazine. One Britpop Bible Select was bad enough but we didn't need a shittier fortnightly one.

I thought they disappeared after about '97....dunno, thought they were decent, at least singles-wise, hard to see for example how Saint Etienne fans wouldn't take a shine (ho ho) to them

I bought one on double cassette at aservice station during a long trip. Can't remember what number it was but it was mostly wall to wall Britpop iirc.
I bought another similar compilation on a different trip called something like "True Brit Anthems" that was all Shed Seven and Supergrass and was indistinguishable from a Shine compilation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_%28compilation_series%29
I like how someone decided to go through that page and link every artist and song to their wiki entries then chucked it after the first album.
9 hits for ctrl-f "Shed" on that page. 13 Oasises and 10 Blurs in the Battle of Britpop. 11 Casts.

I cant actually decide which of the shine albums was the worsthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shine_%28compilation_series%29
Do we judge it on the highest number of worst songs per album or discount that album if it actually has some good songs on it?

i think we supported the Heart Throbs one time after caning vodka all day, leading to probably the most fucked-up cover of Nick Drake's "Parasite" ever

Because they were friends of friends, we got to see them at their first gig, supporting Zodiac Mindwarp at the After Dark, Reading. They were excellent already.

I have a couple of Indie Top 20s from around the '88-'90 era picked out of bargain bins a decade after that. Maybe it's just because they were from a little before my indie-time, whereas the Shine series was ubiquitous when I thought I knew everything about music already, but the Indie Top 20s seemed a much more interesting prospect, or at least more varied and less crushingly lads-bants-innit
xps what I'd give to hear the fucked-up Nick Drake covers of vodka-addled pre-www ilxors

I never owned a Shine compilation CD, but I know a hell of a lot of people who have owned at least one at some point in the mid to late '90s.
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 18:31 (eleven years ago) link
Re: Ruth,
I'm only really familiar with one song of theirs, which was called 'I Don't Know'... I have a very very vague memory of them performing it on The National Lottery(!) - (very very vague because I never actually watched The National Lottery, so chances are it was on in the background while someone else was watching it).
If memory serves one of the guys from Ruth ended up "becoming" Aqualung...
― The Jupiter 8 (Turrican), Monday, 19 November 2012 18:37 (eleven years ago) link
And another bit of trivia: Daf Ieuan, drummer from Super Furry Animals, was a member of Catatonia briefly. He played drums on roughly over half of Way Beyond Blue (including the aforementioned 'Sweet Catatonia') and left to focus on Super Furry Animals.

I thought I'd heard of Ruth bcz I thought they were on a (uhh) Metal Hammer CD I got in 1995, but it turns out to have been a song called "Ruth" by the Wrens, and it is weirding me out that a) the Wrens were on a Metal Hammer CD and b) I didn't realise this until now despite somewhat liking the Wrens a few years after that
(obviously Ruth aren't metal but nor are the Wrens or basically anyone else on the Metal Hammer CD in question)
anyway I have never heard that song before and none of their other song titles ring a bell, but on that evidence 90s Britpop band Ruth < annoying-vocalled 80s French synthpop band Ruth (youtube)

Ruth put me in mind of bands like The Poppyheads who even had a single called 'Wake Up, America'http://s.discogss.com/image/R-1441522-1219962065.jpeg
i'm assuming the Sarah Records Poppyheads are a different band
― 'Separate Lives', by Phil Collins & Marilyn Manson (PaulTMA), Monday, 19 November 2012 20:02 (eleven years ago) link
I only realised there were two Poppyheads recently. I have multiple singles by the 90s one, they were like a teen Wonder Stuff, definitely not the same as the Sarah records lot.
Sadly it seems this thread was custom made to cover my teen years.
