Pink Frost could melt a good section of under 25 year olds in this day and age, I'd reckon.

Dan Savage will back me up, I think.
I mean Dan Selzer...shit. I used to get those names confused. I'm sorry.
― Ozzy Goth Beatles (Bimble), Sunday, 1 February 2009 05:50 (seventeen years ago)
That's ok. I like Dan Savage.
The Chills were great. Brave Words is underrated.
― dan selzer, Sunday, 1 February 2009 06:32 (seventeen years ago)
Gosh thanks for forgiving me for that Dan. That was a problem for me for several years.

Allegedly, Martin will have something new out soon-ish. I've heard that before, though. Sad about his career arc (or lack thereof) this decade. So much talent in that man.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:40 (sixteen years ago)
Man, almost a year and nothing. Anyone have any scoop on what Martin is up to?
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 3 June 2010 02:09 (sixteen years ago)
played a bunch o' gigs in australia a couple of weeks ago. still got it, though the mix was atrocious. i think they've got a new EP out too?
― Help Im minger (electricsound), Thursday, 3 June 2010 02:11 (sixteen years ago)
Hmm haven't heard anything, and there's nothing on here: Chills Official Discography but I may be out of touch.
― Bill E, Thursday, 3 June 2010 03:31 (sixteen years ago)
they definitely had something recent at the merch stand, but it might well have been that 'stand by' EP as i didn't look that closely
― Help Im minger (electricsound), Thursday, 3 June 2010 03:32 (sixteen years ago)
In off-topic but slightly related news, Die Die Die have signed to Flying Nun today.

was not expecting this! his voice sounds pretty good.
― mizzell, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 15:31 (twelve years ago)
guitars chime pleasantly too, nothing earth shattering and no "Pink Frost", but then what is?
― Neil S, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 15:33 (twelve years ago)
Pretty much sounds like the Chills! I wonder if this means he's ...cleaned up? Dealt with his depression?
― Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 2 July 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)
I'm excited -- hoping for a tour!

Why in all the press for the new track are they saying it's the first new Chills music since 1996? The Stand By mini-LP came out in 2004. Does that not count as an official Chills release for some reason I've not heard about?

Aw, you got me excited for new material. A live album will be nice and all but I want me some fresh meat!
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 30 August 2013 02:26 (twelve years ago)
Yes. More new songs please. Its only been a million years.
― Hinklepicker, Friday, 30 August 2013 06:17 (twelve years ago)
Just listened to "Sunburnt" and "Stand By" for the first time in years - both weaker than I remember. The overly busy and loud keyboards on "Sunburnt" hurt many of the songs, though it does have some killer cuts like "Come Home" and the title track. "Stand By" has full-band versions of some of the demos that were released on "Sketchbook" and I prefer the demos.
Still hoping for one helluva comeback from Martin! "Molten Gold" was good.

that recent BBC sessions disc is fantastic. hadn't heard those before...
― tylerw, Monday, 23 March 2015 14:20 (eleven years ago)
They were part of the "Secret Box" set, have you heard that Tyler?
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Monday, 23 March 2015 14:47 (eleven years ago)
i haven't... aside from the first few albums, i'm not super knowledgable.
― tylerw, Monday, 23 March 2015 14:51 (eleven years ago)
yikes, looking at the prices it goes for on discogs i should have hung onto that thing (and sold it now!)

so, reading that his habit corresponds to when his record collection started showing up in the used bins around town... i did wonder. wouldn't have guessed he was such a zappa fan to be honest.
― no lime tangier, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 18:18 (eleven years ago)
How do you know it was his stuff?
One time I met him and showed him what I had just bought and he said, "I want that." He loved collecting music as much as making it.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 19:12 (eleven years ago)
he has the dastardly habit of writing his name on the cover/label, even down to how much he paid for them in the case of the copy of the byrd's younger than yesterday that i have :-/
and yeah, no question he's a massive music fan
― no lime tangier, Tuesday, 24 March 2015 19:19 (eleven years ago)

i was a huge fan from the first time i heard "Pink Frost" on, saw em live several times in that '85-92ish period (I think at the Knitting Factory on Halloween night, maybe '88?). Sorry to hear about MP's spiral, hope he makes the best of it henceforth.

There's plenty of, um, scattered brilliance throughout the last few albums, but they just feel a bit too smoothed over, production-wise. It's like when my favorite 4AD and adjacent artists got into a studio with Hugh Jones, and lost a certain edge in the process. Pale Saints, Ultra Vivid Scene, Kitchens of Distinction, I'm looking at you!
― henry s, Friday, 21 March 2025 21:55 (one year ago)
The organ sounds are nice and very early Chills. I wonder if they chose the same model from the oldest line-up

I'm sat here playing the recording I made of them at Hebden Bridge Trades Club in 2023 and reading this thread.
I so nearly didn't go to this gig. Most times, my shitty old Mercedes van would start and run OK, but sometimes it would refuse for like 30-40 attempts; occasionally having to be abandoned or taken to a garage, only for them to say they could find nothing wrong with it. Anyway, I was on my way to the show in question when it failed to restart after stopping for fuel.
It was like the 100th turn of the key when it eventually fired and - for a minute - I thought that maybe I should go home while it was working. After all, I had seen them in Manchester a few days earlier and, since 2014*, Chills tours had been a fairly regular occurrence.
Then I came to my senses... the heap was running, and I had a full tank of diesel so I would undoubtedly make it to Hebden Bridge. If it failed to start on the way home then I could always crash out in the back and figure out what to do in the morning.
If only all my decisions in life were this good.
PS the van started first go on the way home.
*I wrote an article about the 2014 tour for a fanzine that, for whatever reason, never made the cut. If I find it again I'll post it here.
