On the other hand, Shonen Knife also contribute a song on there, which seems a bit strange.

Explains why Takeshi and Atsuo look so femme in that middle pic.

Been re-listening to Akuma No Uta and Pink a lot in the last few weeks and I've enjoyed them a hell of a lot. It's been a while. I didn't keep up after Pink - which of the last few albums are most worth my time and money please?

kraudive, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:24 (twelve years ago)

Oh I have Rainbow and Altar as well. I should find them in "the box" in the attic.

kraudive, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:27 (twelve years ago)

What is with all these 2011 albums?

kraudive, Thursday, 8 August 2013 23:27 (twelve years ago)

Smile [Japanese version, please] is great. I never got into any of those three albums that all came out at the same time, but I was happy when "Pary Boy" came on unexpectedly when I was listening to a failed compilation of mostly year end favorites I had put together. I still haven't heard the album that came out this year.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 9 August 2013 12:57 (twelve years ago)

Second the Japanese version of Smile, a less extreme and more poppy version of Akuma and Pink but still heavy and Satan worshipping.

Never bothered much with the 2011 trilogy, but if you like '80s thrash, the full version of "Czechoslovakia" is hella worth tracking down.

May I Call You Jiggleee? (Leee), Friday, 9 August 2013 15:45 (twelve years ago)

"Pary Boy" of course should have been "Party Boy."

"Pary Boy" looks more like a Butthole Surfers title: "No it's really supposed to be 'Pary Boy!'"

How many rock bands as good or better are there, among Boris's contemporaries? Not very many.

We are all Hannah Cho now (_Rudipherous_), Sunday, 1 December 2013 05:48 (twelve years ago)

they didn't release a really good record for at least 5 years so..

the new album rules, maybe my favorite of theirs since smile. the poppier songs are gorgeous and sort of have an... emo feel?

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 17 June 2014 15:11 (eleven years ago)

been leaning in that direction since akuma no uta, imo, but i haven't heard the new one, so maybe you mean in a new way?

It really is. Maybe they hate Nirvana.

It's no "Sometimes," but I think it's more boring than awful. The slow-mo chorus is great.

This is the only Boris album I really like, which is odd considering how pop it is. Stuff like Pink is OK but too cheesy rawkin for my tastes, I try to listen to Flood from time to time but I don't think I have the patience for it.

meaty, desperate, and honest about the world we live in (ultros ultros-ghali), Sunday, 17 May 2015 13:36 (eleven years ago)

i really like a lot of their other stuff (probably akuma no uta most), but the daymare version of that record (i.e. the one that begins with "flare") is just so virtuoso and fun. i'm bummed that the far more common 'tearbridge' version's sequencing (and i think alternate mixes at times, iirc?) mess it up

soyrev, Monday, 18 May 2015 00:18 (eleven years ago)

I forgot that I liked Noise last year which has a fair bit of rawk on it, my own opinions don't make sense sometimes.

i liked a bit of Noise but it's nowhere close to the variety, cohesion and fun of New Album: Daymare Edition *imo*

Worth noting that Boris have really started to go in on their Bandcamp page this year; they had a few things up for a long while but after No came out they started adding more and more from the past to the site:

https://boris.bandcamp.com/

Tomorrow vein, präparat and eternity will be added.

There's a bunch of Boris threads so I'm not sure the most appropriate one, but it's been bumped most recently so...

I mentioned this in the Rolling Metal thread, but the new collaboration with Merzbow, 2R0I2P0 is easily one of the best things I've heard from them in a long time. In addition to some other songs, they take on some songs from LOVE & EVOL, and it really hits on the strengths of both. There is a moment during "EVOL" where Merzbow's got a bed of his usual noise grinding away and a soaring guitar solo starts to pierce through, it's great.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 3 December 2020 22:12 (five years ago)

Yeah agreed -- a thrilling album.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 3 December 2020 22:23 (five years ago)

I'm genuinely shocked by how good it is. I feel like they've been increasingly hit or miss in recent years and that my days of being absolutely wowed by them were in the past, but happily proven wrong with this one.

New one, W, is great! Love how it builds from like this almost subdued, hazy dreampop vibe and builds the noise and sludge as it goes along.

was delighted to discover "rainbow" was available to stream after i'd lost my cd copy and couldn't bear to break the seal on my vinyl copy.

also lol, but perfectly in character with the band, that there are two different boris bands with selective sections of their discography on spotify.

Really killer new song, "Cry" on the new Twins of Evil split LP. Sadly the Melvins track is just an inessential rework of a song from their latest album, but the Boris track is worth the (cheap!) price of admission.
