never underestimate the power of a good tv show theme song

Saint Etienne polls are closed, but Billy is too busy to start the results rollout until the weekend. PP, ready to roll with Hüsker Dü? (As though I don't already know the answer to that.)

WilliamC, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

I can start the HD nominations/prep thread this afternoon.

pplains, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)

im gonna start theme tune voting tomorrow. how long do voting periods usually last?

"It's like death metal lyrics, but about a vagina." (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 November 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)

40 days and 40 nights

(j/k...10-14 days usually)

WilliamC, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

Whoa shit! That's the first time I've clicked on a megaupload link since the heat came down.

Is there a link somewhere in these 1700 answers for a Google Doc file that I think finefine made?

Put my name down for a Pixies ballot poll. I realize it won't take place until about 2018, but I'll be here.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 17 November 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

will do

WilliamC, Saturday, 17 November 2012 21:46 (thirteen years ago)

William, what're your plans for the Miles poll? I'm hopefully getting the big box set for my Christmas and am hoping I'll get the chance to do it some kind of justice.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 17 November 2012 21:48 (thirteen years ago)

To paraphrase one of the Hernandez Brothers (I think), the plan is to spin and spin and spin until there's blood all over the walls.

WilliamC, Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

But seriously, I'm not sure yet. Aside from the spinning.

WilliamC, Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:04 (thirteen years ago)

Ballots will be longer than 20 spots though. Probably 30... 40 feels too big. My philosophy about these polls is that the cutting is as important as the ordering, and that the cutting should hurt at least a little bit.

WilliamC, Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

Yes indeed. The Doors poll will allow no more than a dozen.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:15 (thirteen years ago)

I'd be interested in running an all-genre, all-time album covers poll if you'd think this would generate a good turnout. Thoughts?

Oneohchex Point Charlie (Spectrist), Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

Wow. I can probably limit my Doors ballot to a dozen easily because I'm not a fan, but I feel sorry for people who are.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

I'd be interested in running an all-genre, all-time album covers poll if you'd think this would generate a good turnout. Thoughts?

My thought is that the top 10 or 15 would congeal into some very recognizable choices and then the rest of your results would be wrought with ties and single votes.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:22 (thirteen years ago)

The Doors' discography is a small one though - can't be more than about seventy tracks. Getting to vote for a third of them would be letting people off far too easy.

I'd be up for a sleeves poll, but agree that it'd probably need a nominations process to hone it down first.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I very much want to avoid the wasteland of low scoring, single vote placements, but I feel that provided voter turnout is high enough and the rollout is capped at say seventy five, then the bulk of the results would be a gallery of recognizable and tasty sleeves. I suppose restricting genres would help, but lord knows we don't need another Best Rock Covers list. I wanna see how ilm ranks Maiden vs Geto Boys vs Cromagnon etc

Oneohchex Point Charlie (Spectrist), Saturday, 17 November 2012 22:38 (thirteen years ago)

Likely doesn't even need to be mentioned, but the Hüsker Dü submissions thread is up and running.

If you couldn't find it, well, it's not your fault. I used an HD song in the title no one's ever heard of and it's not easy to do a search for Hüsker Dü.

I was hoping the 2nd volume of the Bootleg Series would be out before the Miles poll, but oh well.

Seriously can't wait for that poll.

I went to a Motown special at Ronnie Scott's last Christmas. It was, by a mile, the funnest gig I've ever been to.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 21 November 2012 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

Don't forget the year-end hiatus while everybody talks about 2012. I don't think Miles will start until mid-January, unless I get overruled. I do think we can get BRUUUUUUUUUUUCE in under the wire though.
