haha i decided a while back to just read all the late great's posts about music as if he's trying to troll me personally and it's been tons of laughs

OK so you actually are trolling some of the time. pretty sure you often aren't but it still feels like it, though.
― some dude, Saturday, 3 November 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)
i do really like this, and i do really like the "dance beats"
the videos they produced for "hustle bones" and "i seen footage" were what swung me toward getting it

anyone else?thinking of seeing them in a couple of weeks, any good live?
― m0stlyClean, Thursday, 8 November 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
They were good last night but all I can really remember now is MC Ride physically pushing Miss Red off the stage when she came on to dance which was pretty alarming. The Bug were great.

as weird major label signings go, it always reminds me of when Foetus was on Sony back in the mid-'90s, like who thought that'd be a big-ticket release ever― don't trust the lil b in apartment 23 (fadanuf4erybody)

just to clarify something that no one else will care about but me, you gotta remember that at this point trent reznor was name-dropping dude on the regular and he was one of the most sought after remix peeps used to give major label alternative artists cred. ah the era of the CDEP

Saw a Juggalo acquaintance on Facebook get recommended Death Grips by a non-Juggalo friend. He wasn't impressed. Said he didn't like the guy's voice. I don't think Juggalos like the Death Grips.

Yeah, Bug were really great w/ Miss Red & Flowdan. Loud and fun. Death Grips sounded a lot quieter to me. It was fun but not amazing or anything. Bonus points for being able to get a beer easily at the bar.

Just out if nowhere it occurs to me that "I've Seen Footage" would be perfect them music for "Freaky Shit," the fictional TV show from Kurt Andersen's novel "Turn of the Century."

Hill talks in a quiet, slow-to-unravel Sacramento drawl. Burnett's voice — on the very infrequent occasions when he does speak with a tape recorder running — is even quieter. "If you look at that and all you see is a dick, I don't really have anything to say, pretty much," Burnett murmurs about the photo that ultimately became the album art for their corrosive, cyber-grinding, electroshock scream-therapy sesh NO LOVE DEEP WEB. "I looked at it and said, 'This is a great photo, and I'd love for this to be the album cover.'" Both Burnett and Hill are reserved, soft-spoken, maybe a little shy, hopelessly insular, and they don't exactly look strangers in the eye when they walk down the street. Most importantly, the men of Death Grips are serious as cancer about making their art.

for like four or five minutes at the beginning of their set on sunday they stood on stage arms crossed, zach hill smoking like fuck yr local ordinances while evanescence played on the bars soundsystem. and i was really excited that they might do something really cool and punk but they were just unhappy w/the levels and waiting for the sound guy to fiddle w/them.
― f (Lamp), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)
Lamp I wish you did a zine that was mainly show reviews. meanwhile can somebody define the tonal parameters of the Sacramento drawl, though? really really

any time I read one of these intense, adjective-laden passages I know exactly who wrote it and hear it in his voice

Most importantly, the men of Death Grips are serious as cancer -- rhythm is a dancer.
― mh, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)
This is a good article! But alot of their story reminds me of, like, gossip about Lindsay Lohan or some other Hollywood celebrity that just cancels stuff at the last minute. Only rather than "Oh, they are a big shot Hollywood flake" these guys get "Oh, they are serious about their art".

serious lols
o get into the next level of the game, Hill started taking some inspiration from his younger brother, a career gamer. In one of their long, confiding conversations, Hill talked about The Book of Five Rings, a 17th-century text of philosophy and strategy from a Japanese swordsman. His brother countered with some techniques used in role-playing-game staple Magic: The Gathering. There are three types of decks in Magic: the speedy offensive of the Aggro deck, the deus ex machina checkmates of the Combo deck, and the slow-and-steady game of the Control deck.
"We perceive that this record label is running a game, right?" says Hill. "The Control deck is the shit because, basically, you un-summon people's magic by using their own magic against them. It's totally control; you put yourself in the same place as the other person, so they have nothing on you, it's like an illusion. Redirection of power and putting yourself in the environments these other people are in — it creates a chaos element to it. We started thinking about that in the sense of where we were as a band."

my takeaway from that article was "Death Grips was in dire need of an accountant and a backhand"
― I loves you, PORGI (DJP), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
there are almost axl rose levels of "ok we will finally explain ourselves ::proceed to make even less sense than when you were left to second guess their motives::"
― some dude, Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)
with added bonus levels of ppl framing that as "these guys are really thumbing their noses at THE MAN" added in
― too many encores (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)
you put yourself in the same place as the other person, so they have nothing on you
It would have been shitty for the label to leak a record and cancel a tour without consulting the band first. The whole part of them going back to the label to try and talk about the second album - after they have dropped out of touring/promoting in the least respectful way possible almost has a George Costanza feel to it. Quitting a job and then going back to work the next monday hoping the boss will somehow just forget that you called them a pinhead.
