they should have just signed with like fucking Load or something and they could have penised it up all they wanted to, but they signed to epic, you knew fucking well that there would be release schedules to adhere to....

also Zach Hill is in this band and he's def been around, it's not like some naive 17 years old here

seasonal hugs (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 2 November 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

zach hill has done l.a. session work iirc!

call all destroyer, Friday, 2 November 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

the thing is that even indie labels need a few months to do promo leading up to a release!

if they don't need/want any marketing support, and they don't need a recording budget (i'm pretty sure they have their own studio setup), it does seem pretty stupid to sign to a major label. maybe they got an advance to live on while making records, but how do they expect to pay that back if they don't deliver the record?

if nothing else maybe this is a good illustration of the death knell for the "subverting from within" tactic irt major labels, though. i mean if you're not gonna sell shit anyway, and there's no avenues for a label the size of epic to really push your music toward anything even approaching a large subcult audience at this point, then cash the check and stfu imo. this isn't the 80s or the 90s and you knew what you were getting into.

i went out and got a new copy of the black/white death grips album today as a result of all this fracas so there you have it

haha i decided a while back to just read all the late great's posts about music as if he's trying to troll me personally and it's been tons of laughs

touch me, tease me, nuts me, deez me (some dude), Saturday, 3 November 2012 01:18 (thirteen years ago)

i'm just kidding!

the late great, Saturday, 3 November 2012 01:31 (thirteen years ago)

OK so you actually are trolling some of the time. pretty sure you often aren't but it still feels like it, though.

some dude, Saturday, 3 November 2012 01:33 (thirteen years ago)

i do really like this, and i do really like the "dance beats"

the videos they produced for "hustle bones" and "i seen footage" were what swung me toward getting it

anyone else?
thinking of seeing them in a couple of weeks, any good live?

m0stlyClean, Thursday, 8 November 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

They were good last night but all I can really remember now is MC Ride physically pushing Miss Red off the stage when she came on to dance which was pretty alarming.
The Bug were great.

it's a sunday night show and i work early next day, so are they worth a monday morning hangover good?

m0stlyClean, Thursday, 8 November 2012 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

as weird major label signings go, it always reminds me of when Foetus was on Sony back in the mid-'90s, like who thought that'd be a big-ticket release ever

― don't trust the lil b in apartment 23 (fadanuf4erybody)

just to clarify something that no one else will care about but me, you gotta remember that at this point trent reznor was name-dropping dude on the regular and he was one of the most sought after remix peeps used to give major label alternative artists cred. ah the era of the CDEP

before you post, consider just admitting you are wrong (jjjusten), Thursday, 8 November 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)

Saw a Juggalo acquaintance on Facebook get recommended Death Grips by a non-Juggalo friend. He wasn't impressed. Said he didn't like the guy's voice. I don't think Juggalos like the Death Grips.

Yeah, Bug were really great w/ Miss Red & Flowdan. Loud and fun. Death Grips sounded a lot quieter to me. It was fun but not amazing or anything. Bonus points for being able to get a beer easily at the bar.

mmmm, Sunday, 11 November 2012 09:53 (thirteen years ago)

Fuck me, I was waiting for electric to come back on all day, it didn't, I was so down I needed dinner to prime me, figured doors at 8 meant show at 11, rolled up at 1030 and the show was fucking over
I am having one shitty fucking month, I had been looking forward to this for almost a year

DEATH GRIPS TUESDAY

BECAUSE IM CRANKING DEATH GRIPS IN A CUBICLE FARM WORK SITUATION

Raymond Cummings, Tuesday, 13 November 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

Just out if nowhere it occurs to me that "I've Seen Footage" would be perfect them music for "Freaky Shit," the fictional TV show from Kurt Andersen's novel "Turn of the Century."

Death Grips show in Boston tonight = cancelled.

Hill talks in a quiet, slow-to-unravel Sacramento drawl. Burnett's voice — on the very infrequent occasions when he does speak with a tape recorder running — is even quieter. "If you look at that and all you see is a dick, I don't really have anything to say, pretty much," Burnett murmurs about the photo that ultimately became the album art for their corrosive, cyber-grinding, electroshock scream-therapy sesh NO LOVE DEEP WEB. "I looked at it and said, 'This is a great photo, and I'd love for this to be the album cover.'" Both Burnett and Hill are reserved, soft-spoken, maybe a little shy, hopelessly insular, and they don't exactly look strangers in the eye when they walk down the street. Most importantly, the men of Death Grips are serious as cancer about making their art.

I have my nomination for Most Disingenuous Thing Said This Year 2012

for like four or five minutes at the beginning of their set on sunday they stood on stage arms crossed, zach hill smoking like fuck yr local ordinances while evanescence played on the bars soundsystem. and i was really excited that they might do something really cool and punk but they were just unhappy w/the levels and waiting for the sound guy to fiddle w/them.

f (Lamp), Tuesday, 20 November 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

Lamp I wish you did a zine that was mainly show reviews. meanwhile can somebody define the tonal parameters of the Sacramento drawl, though? really really
