No thread on the Girl Talk album, surely some mistake

I listen to Top 40 radio fairly regularly, but I only heard "I'm a Flirt" a handful of times. Which is to say, I don't think it was nearly as big as its popularity among Internet critics and fans might've made it seem. (PS I prefer the Hood Internet's mash-up of "I'm a Flirt" with Broken Social Scene's "7/4 Shoreline.")btw i'm white

I'll check it out, Jaymc - I really liked their mashup of Amerie's Take Control of Me & Da Funk. Thanks!

My personal problem with the Girl Talk albums is that I can't pinpoint a good beat that I enjoy. I disagree with people above that his M.O. is sample-spotting or taste-pandering. I actually find it comforting that most people on here AND critics are willing to enjoy his Top 40 samples. However, I just kind of seem to hear a beat underneath a bunch of samples. I say "personal" because I can see how someone can disagree with me, but I think it comes down to subjective taste. He's good at what he does, and he puts on a helluva party, but when listening to the album on my own I don't enjoy many of the songs. Some of his songs are really great (that Grizzly Bear/Clipse one last year was killer), but I seem to hear the same structure on most of his songs. Generic beat + one sample he kind of sticks with for most of the song + more samples thrown in. This is due to personal preference, though, and not disagreement with the concepts behind his songs/mashups/compositions/whatever like a lot of the people do above. I wish I liked his stuff more, and I like his taste, but I'm never really drawn in to like it a lot. The reason I'm kind of addicted to the Hood Internet mashups (at least the better ones) is precisely their beat selection and the fact they match songs really well as far pitch or flow. Maybe I'm being stubborn or way too influenced by Hood Internet and traditional mashups, but I prefer a fleshed-out beat all the way through.

skygreenleopard, Monday, 28 July 2008 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

i would be bummed if he got sued even tho i hate this music

billstevejim, Monday, 28 July 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm also wondering how he hasn't gotten sued, especially since the RIAA has sued families and children in the past for downloading and snitched on DJ Drama (who was, um, helping their artists sell and make a name for themselves). I'm guessing they think it's a booby trap.

That guy just looks unnaturally skinny. He looks like Tom Hanks in Philadelphia or something. Or like some guy who was a P.O.W. for several weeks. And he always makes this annoying "inquisitive" face. Isn't he aware that he's sort of overstaying his welcome? You'd think he might be able to step back and look at himself and say "Oh man, my annoying rosatia 'd mug has been looking disinterested on the cover of every alternative weekly this nation over, maybe I shouldn't do a Windows ad because I'm starting to oversaturate the market"

Sorry I'm really stoned right now

filthy dylan, Sunday, 9 November 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

I had fun playing "spot the sample" but in the end I couldn't help thinking it was like Jive Bunny & the Mastermixers for the ADHD set. I guess I was hoping for something a little more subversive.

Or, like, "James Last's Non Stop Dance Party 27". Which also, admittedly, is a pretty hot jam.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 08:39 (seventeen years ago)

i dont get how what hes saying about freddie hubbard makes sense there. still reading tho

choom gangsta (deej), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, freddie hubbard came up post-bebop which was all about 'art' over 'performance' -- just not sure its making the point he wants it to

choom gangsta (deej), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 09:27 (seventeen years ago)

i think it was more about hubbard being a technician (a jazz improviser in hubbard's case) rather than a conceptualist; he's arguing that the conceptual focus on gillis overshadows discussion about the quality of what he does.

picking hubbard sure seems kind of awkward after two days ago though.

unclejam79, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

he wrote that on the 21st, but yeah, i think unclejam has it there w/ technique vs concept

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i think i just think thats an off-point example that doesnt fit easily into being a technician rather than artiste or whatever

choom gangsta (deej), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

It seems like an exhausting way to say that GT = technically and conceptually dull, plus kinda abrasive and samey.

I think there are some awkward transitions when he's trying to get from one major section to the next, but in general I have no beef with his technique... I've spent a lot of idle hobby-time trying to do the same type of thing and it is not easy! He has a good way of milking the maximum surprise and fun out of whatever he uses...if it was just kind of slamming samples together it wouldn't have any staying power, but he manages to build the overlaps into new hooks that actually get stuck in my head now. I dunno, I think it's really great. The amount of attention on him as this guy/party god kind of works against it though, I mean the disintegration of the individual artist voice that's promised by the hyper-mash-up concept. But I guess he can't really help that.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 05:11 (seventeen years ago)

I have opted to pay $0.00 because:

I'm white btw
I don't like mashups
I've never been able to enjoy hip-hop
I would be embarrassed to have a girl talk cd lying around my house
I have like 900 albums on my desk that i have to get through for this week
I've been buying those 50 song "every joint off the radio + a couple classics" mix-cds since h.s. dont really see how this is different besides having more garbage music

love that cover.

is this to be a commercially-released disc? it says the download is free, and meant to be listened to as a whole (so we aren't talking about a sample song being made available for download to promote the album).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 15 November 2010 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

I think his previous albums were free too

anyway love girl talk can't wait

dayo, Monday, 15 November 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

The last one was a Radiohead style pay what you want deal.

OK, this is pretty well done so far. It's only worth listening to once though so listen closely!

# 5:09 Beastie Boys - "Hey Ladies"
# 5:15 White Town - "Your Woman"
# 5:18 Lady GaGa - "LoveGame"

Listening now, this has some really good patches! I still miss the much higher sample density on Night Ripper, and he stays on the same thing too long for my taste, but the highs are high. Dude keeps pre-empting all of my samples though!

Doctor Casino, Monday, 15 November 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, he's holding onto samples too long (did this on his last album though iirc, save for the Big Country solo coz that should run forever). Still, some of it's really fun.

Gukbe, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

Also Night Ripper was enough at 41 minutes. Only about halfway through this one but 70 minutes seems too long.

Gukbe, Monday, 15 November 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

Some of these samples are infuriatingly familiar...hopefully wikipedia will pick up the slack.

skip, Monday, 15 November 2010 21:01 (fifteen years ago)

All the single ladies over Ante Up is incredible in this mix.

Personally I think this is a lot stronger than Night Ripper was.

gonna just check mediafire

thomas smangalter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:46 (fifteen years ago)

It took a couple of tries before it worked for me, you just have to leave it running until the DL window pops up.

Listened to about 3/4 of this and was actually surprised by how much of it I didn't recognize, particularly the music. But I was listening in my car on the highway, which makes the music harder to hear. So far "Pretty Boy Swag" over "Windowlicker" is my favorite part.

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 15 November 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)
