hay everybody, this album is really really good
i kinda don't like the re-do of candles in the sun, seems like it wouldn't even make sense if you didn't know the ADC version
― goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)
thank you, i was starting to feel like the only person here who sees that version as a downgrade and a bum note for the album
― Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i feel the same way
the rest of this album is ridiculously good though
― all mods con (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)
I feel equally blah about both versions. It would have been the weakest song on the album either way.
also this album taught me how to spell kaleidoscope correctly and for that, miguel, i thank you

i like how simple, loose and reverb-y his guitar playing is, kind of a wildcard element in the sound
― goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
I thought he played more guitar but "Pussy is Mine" is the only song on which no one else gets credit.

oh ha, i should have hedged with "the" instead of "his" but i had assumed it was him...
― goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)
He didn't play it on "Arch & Point"?
― thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)
this is insane

oh god. that's almost as bad as the wiki page for Kendrick's joint.
― thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)
the version of the album i downloaded has these really loud rave synths all over and are all tagged "remixed by sh0rty" :-(
― flopson, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)
lol gross
I don't think anyone has mentioned this but I love how much tape hiss there is on "Arch & Point"

I thought he did :(
Ace job putting his fingers on the right frets though.

xposts YOLO imagery! wut
― Roz, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)
I've been kind of disappointed to see that he doesn't seem to play that song live at all. :(
― thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)
it does seem like it should be a live staple, doesn't it
strangely heartened to see that miggy has warranted some obsessive wiki attention
― Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)
It transitions into the rock song "Arch & Point", which has lascivious lyrics,[30] sexually-charged ballet metaphors,[22] bare power pop elements,[6] plopping percussion, and an acoustic guitar coda.[17]
#plop

sexually charged plopping

My least favorite song is "Where's the Fun in Forever?" by far. I actually kind of like teh album version of "Candles in the Sun" better than the ADC version, the album version is appropriately rejigged as an Album Closer that works really well, throbs with this "important statement" vibe that isn't in-your-face or preachy, also I really like the hazier feel, and those drum fills when he says "heros often get SHOT" are amazing.
― king louie riel (rennavate), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)
i also think the john lennon interview at the end of the adc is a little obvious
― king louie riel (rennavate), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)
strong yolo imagery in beyond good & evil
― ogmor, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:55 (thirteen years ago)
My least favorite song is Pussy Is Mine. It just feels a bit cheap, jokes and all.
― O-Jah Da Lionmane (longneck), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)
^^^ Yeah, I've started to skip it tbh.
Some people have grafittied YOLO on walls.[3][4] It has become a popular Twitter hashtag.[5] Some youth have said that it is their motto,[6][7]
In a news article, the reporter compared the phrase YOLO to Yolo County California.[20]

i love "where's the fun in forever?", it feels so low-key and detached without actually losing its anthemic qualities. vocal arrangements are awesome, so's the steam-train rhythm and i the bit where the bass drops out and alicia and the handclaps come in >>>>>>>>
"pussy is mine" works oddly well as a tossed-off trifle at that point in the album, hard to hate. i guess "adorn" really is my least favourite on the album
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)
lol shine on you stubborn diamond
― Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)
"Where's the fun..." is great imo, in my top 5 on the album
― Well, ILE be damned! (seandalai), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:09 (thirteen years ago)
"The Thrill" is the one I skip.
― the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)
if i skip any it's "use me" & "don't look back" cuz sometimes i'm not in the mood for bombastic stadium rock
― lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)
half the album is bombastic stadium rock tho.
― thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)
"use me" is amazing and not really very bombastic imo
― Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)
i NEVER skip "use me"
if i'm not in the mood for "use me" and "do you..." i'm not in the mood for miguel, or life, or anything - those two are THE songs on the album for me
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:13 (thirteen years ago)
oh i agree that "use me" is one of the very best songs on the album, sometimes i don't feel like hearing it tho
― lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)
― thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, October 30, 2012 5:13 PM (43 seconds ago) Bookmark
this... isn't true
"Use Me" is the record's most purely immmersive sound experience imo.
― the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)
yeah add "how many drinks?" to those two for me, lex, and i'd agree with you
and "arch and point"
― king louie riel (rennavate), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)
his falsetto on "use me" is just...vertiginous
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:15 (thirteen years ago)
love the tangent about "bohemian rhapsody" indirectly inspiring "where's the fun" in the spotify commentary
― Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)
only skippers are "where's the fun" and "candles in the sun", and even the latter i can't muster up much hate for. for shame at skipping "thrill"!
― all mods con (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
when i cherrypick from this album it's usually
don't look back > use me > do you... > where's the fun in forever? > arch & point > ...all > gravity
"kaleidoscope dream" and "the thrill" are the ones that hit the spot when i'm in the mood, but i'm not always in the mood
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
"where's the fun" in forever is def the one song that seemed slight to me first few times around that i now thing is 10/10
― lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
From "Use Me" through to "Arch & Point" defines the album for me, I often only listen to that sequence on repeat.
― Well, ILE be damned! (seandalai), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:17 (thirteen years ago)
i wouldn't say "bombastic" but i do think the more desperate/cathartic/blood'n'guts miguel gets on this album, the better
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)
Had been thinking "Adorn" might have a good shot at EOY glory but it seems like everyone has their own personal favourite Miguel song.
― Well, ILE be damned! (seandalai), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:18 (thirteen years ago)
"Kaleidoscope Dream" has an insinuating chorus -- a real earworm. I'll catch myself singing it in the kitchen and shit.
― the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)
no "adorn" will do pretty well

"Don't Look Back", "Use Me", "The Thrill", and "Arch & Point" totally are, and even "Where's The Fun In Forever" and "Candles In The Sun" lean in that direction for at least part of their durations
