I'll hold you to that!

how's life, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:52 (eleven years ago) link

the song i feel least happy about on my '80s rock ballot is "Sweet Child O' Mine" while I believe Axl was having a genuine, tender moment, I just can't get over the knowledge that Slash couldn't have given less of a fuck.

Appetite is still a solid album

da croupier, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:53 (eleven years ago) link

Slash is lying about not liking Sweet Child imo

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:55 (eleven years ago) link

yeah initially i thought "well i can enjoy it FOR slash knocking off such a solid hook even while rolling his eyes at steven adler" but recently the tale has harshed my buzz

da croupier, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:59 (eleven years ago) link

i used to hear stories about Slash hating "Sweet Child" or coming up with the riff as a joke but then in his memoir and interviews have never seen him expressing any negative opinions of the song so i've started to wonder if it was an urban legend (xpost)

ah i see that story is on the wiki page, i guess it's more confirmed than i'd thought? also lol:

On an interview on Eddie Trunk's New York radio show in May 2006, Axl Rose stated that his original concept for the video focused on the theme of drug trafficking. According to Rose, the video was to depict an Asian woman carrying a baby into a foreign land, only to discover at the end that the child was dead and filled with heroin. This concept was rejected by Geffen Records.

wikipedia credits the "slash made the riff as a joke, then Axl went 'aw that would go well with my love poem" bit to Duff in an '88 hit parader article, though links to some foreign "meanings behind songs" site. xpost

da croupier, Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:05 (eleven years ago) link

xp: Reminds me of how the original cover of Appetite was supposed to be a picture of the Challenger explosion.

how's life, Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

xpost: slash talks about it in his autobiography. called it "circus music" or something.

he wildly contradicts himself about it

Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 28 October 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

the impression i got was that slash didn't like it at the time because it was kind of corny, but over time, he's grown to enjoy it.

Poliopolice, Sunday, 28 October 2012 23:51 (eleven years ago) link

riff is corny, izzy lifts it to glory anyway, solos rule

No kidding... May be my fave "other guitarist in the band" next to Malcolm Young

I would advise everyone here to listen to "Welcome to the Jungle" again with fresh ears. How fucking amazing is this song? There's like 15 different parts and they all rule. I have an especially newfound appreciation for the badass Izzy guitar riff behind the "serpentine" and "sha-na-na-na-knees" part. KICK ASS!

Poliopolice, Monday, 29 October 2012 15:43 (eleven years ago) link

Juju Hounds record is killer. he's made TEN albums since then but i think i'm happier just assuming they're good than finding out for sure.

Victory Goon (some dude), Monday, 29 October 2012 15:44 (eleven years ago) link

Never listened to the Ju Ju Hounds album, but always kinda liked the cover. Maybe I'll check it out, seeing as how I'm basically stuck in my apartment for two days.

also, Duff is a hugely underrated bass player. he's got some great parts on AfD.

Poliopolice, Monday, 29 October 2012 15:54 (eleven years ago) link

Dust N Bones is still one of my favorite GNR songs.

from wiki: Stradlin was then asked by his former Guns N' Roses band mates Duff McKagan, Slash, and Matt Sorum to join the supergroup Velvet Revolver. Although he contributed to the songwriting process while the band was in its formative stage,[19] Stradlin ultimately declined to join due to his aversion to life on the road and his unwillingness to work with a lead singer, although he offered to split vocal duties with McKagan.[20]

Velvet Revolver would have been a thousand times better with Izzy & Duff doing vox vs stinky Scott Weiland.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2012 15:57 (eleven years ago) link

I just started listening to opening track on youtube

straight Keefing omg I love it

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2012 16:01 (eleven years ago) link

Agreed. What a shame that Izzy wasn't part of that; and what a shame that Scott Weiland was. The GNR guys have been cursed with singers with awful attitudes.

Also, Adler on drums... He's got a great, sleazy style that just really works with GNR, something that accentuates how terrible and unfit Matt Sorum was for this band.

Poliopolice, Monday, 29 October 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know enough about drumming to know if Sorum is good or bad but I just really cannot stand him. Him and Gilby fucking Clarke. gross.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2012 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

Sorum is "good," in the sense that he had a fine career as a session musician. But he doesn't have much in the way of character.

Although it has some decent songs, I'm actually not super crazy about Appetite, but I still think UYI is great. And really only about a quarter of it is filler/garbage ("My World" is one of the worst songs GnR or anyone has ever recorded), which is pretty good for a double album.

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Monday, 29 October 2012 16:17 (eleven years ago) link

"Estranged" is awesome for sure.

Poliopolice, Monday, 29 October 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

I haven't heard any reasonable complaints about my world that also don't apply to the rest of the catalog.
I think my world might even have the same riffs as welcome to the jungle (but sped up)

Philip Nunez, Monday, 29 October 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

I'm def a sucker for the Illusion ballads, and stuff like Pretty Tied Up, Dust And Bones, the real bluesy rockers. and I have a huge soft spot for Coma even though it's 9 million years long.

but Illusion could totally have stood being one album - some of that stuff like Get In The Ring is almsot impossible to listen to now, lol. Even when I listen now I think I skip at least half the songs.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 29 October 2012 16:29 (eleven years ago) link

"My World" sounds like the work of a thirteen-year-old who just discovered ProTools and anger.

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Monday, 29 October 2012 16:31 (eleven years ago) link

"Get In The Ring" also stupid imo.

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Monday, 29 October 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link

Actually, it wouldn't be that hard to whittle down to a single album. The covers aren't bad but they're pretty unnecessary.

Come Into My Layer (Old Lunch), Monday, 29 October 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

So the problem is protools? they're not allowed to use samples?

Philip Nunez, Monday, 29 October 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link

Nunez, you're so off-base with this band, i don't even

Nah the covers are good. I heard Knockin On Heaven's Door on the radio the other day, I was SURE I was sick of it but halfway through I cranked it up and was HAAAAY HAY HAY YEAAAH'ing right along with it lol

except I always hate that phone call part.

again I don't see how this is more embarrassing than "feel my serpentine" or "yowza" or "Hunan grocery store ain't that fresh"
