"That was the most important line of the song," Swift says. "It was a relationship where I felt very critiqued and subpar. He'd listen to this music that nobody had heard of … but as soon as anyone else liked these bands, he'd drop them. I felt that was a strange way to be a music fan. And I couldn't understand why he would never say anything nice about the songs I wrote or the music I made."

Can't believe TSwift dated an ILM-er.

But also the fact that she wanted to make a pop song that would particularly offend his indie sensibilities...

I don't think I was able to post at the time but yes, great interview lex!

Swift isn’t just a KingSlayer of Men, but a celebrated one. The carefully curated men in Taylor Swift’s life are like victory heads, who may as well be stuffed and mounted on the walls of her recording studio, spoils of victory and reminders to all who may try to enter—literally—of her unimpeachable brute force.

c sharp major, Thursday, 25 October 2012 12:25 (thirteen years ago)

not sure if that article is entirely meant to be positive

乒乓, Thursday, 25 October 2012 13:25 (thirteen years ago)

not all the reasons for taylor's juggernaut status are positive!

c sharp major, Thursday, 25 October 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

if ppl feel threatened by that article maybe they're not comfortable enough with their taylor stan identity.

c sharp major, Thursday, 25 October 2012 13:52 (thirteen years ago)

^^^yes

it's really funny and well-written

perhaps overplays kanye being "wracked with grief" but other than that it's pretty irrefutable

lex pretend, Thursday, 25 October 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

I have poo-face on reading that reading, but I s'pose armchair tabloid analysis is gonna follow girl around like a rainbow

Awesome. Nice piece too, Lex.

WANEGBT has really grown on me. She sounds exactly like the Paramore chick when she does the "I'm telling you, I'm telling you" part. I don't like Parasnore, lol, but its cool anyway. Peace

turds (Hungry4Ass), Saturday, 27 October 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

man i really like this record

sean gramophone, Saturday, 27 October 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

really like the sheeran track now and man at least he had the sense to only sing half a verse

regardless the snow patrol song is in my head all the damn time

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Saturday, 27 October 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)

do Americans all pronounce foyer like that?

Jamie_ATP, Sunday, 28 October 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)

Loved the piece Lex. You should use that clip every time you want to end an argument, like Woody Allen calling on Marshall McLuhan in Annie Hall.

Deafening silence (DL), Sunday, 28 October 2012 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

xp: yes, to rhyme with "lawyer"

how's life, Sunday, 28 October 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

WEIRD. she should have used lobby.

Jamie_ATP, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:41 (thirteen years ago)

lover in the foyer vs lover in the lobby. hm.

how's life, Sunday, 28 October 2012 20:48 (thirteen years ago)

I pronounce it in the proper French way, but then again I watched a lot of Truffaut when I was a teen.

Being a dumb American, I am lucky to be unaware of the apparent terror that is Ed Sheeran, so I will say that I find "Everything Has Changed" fairly beautiful, I especially love how her voice rises on each subsequent occurrence of "I just wanna know you better." Tonally, it reminds me a lot of "Enchanted."

The other day I went on a hike during a gloomy and windy day and wept to "I Almost Do." I really love how it switches from pining almost-calling him, to dismissive almost-but-not wanting him back. She does this often, wonderfully, using stress in her voice to change the intent of her language.

Really only skip "Sad Beautiful Tragic" (title of which seems like a Morissette reject) and "The Lucky One" (boohoo fame whatever, even though it reminds me of Wham!)

all the other twinks with their fucked up dicks (billy), Monday, 29 October 2012 04:55 (thirteen years ago)

Sheeran collab is good. Snow Patrol collab is not. Not sure about: "The Lucky One" and "Red". The rest sounded fantastic on first listen. I got the deluxe edition and all of the three bonus tracks are worth having.

Favourite so far = "All Too Well".

Jeff W, Monday, 29 October 2012 11:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah you can easily sub "the moment i knew" and "girl at home" for the collabs

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Monday, 29 October 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

no one else is gonna love me when i get mad, mad, mad <3 <3

(it's like portishead's "nobody loves me, it's true, not like you do" translated into swift)

In what represents the eighth largest first-week debut in modern chart history, Swift’s fourth studio album, the follow-up to 2010’s Speak Now, debuts at #1 with a gargantuan total of 1.21 million, beating that last record’s 1.05m.

It’s the highest first-week total in a decade, since Eminem’s The Eminem Show debuted with 1.3m in June 2002, finishing behind The Beatles’ 1 compilation, which sold 1.26 in January 2001. Swift’s the first artist since Eminem to have two first-week million sellers in a row. In addition, Swift will set the record for largest, non-99-cent-sale-priced digital album, besting the 420k digital first week most recently set by Mumford & Sons' Babel.
