lol calm down rev did I hit a sensitive spot

乒乓, Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

ha, possibly

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

was p awful for me last year living half an hour from detroit and even car radios had trouble picking up rap/r&b stations, wth america

乒乓, Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)

Really? I live 45 mins north of Seattle and can not only pick up most stations from Seattle fine but most stations from Vancouver, which is 2+ hours away.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

it always weirds me out that there are places in lower 48 where you can't hear much rap/R&B on the radio. i lived in friggin delaware for most of the '90s and could pick up a pretty good R&B station.

some dude, Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

yeah it was weird - the detroit stations were maybe underpowered?

xp power 99 is my fav philly station

乒乓, Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, that's possible. kube's signal is so powerful that when someone tried to start a rap/r&b station in vancouver (which was actually really really good, cancon problems aside) they only lasted a couple years because all their potential listeners stuck with kube, whose signal reached all the way up there.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:54 (thirteen years ago)

do canadian rap stations just satisfy cancon requirements by playing the same amount of drake as u.s. stations now?

awful wedded wein (some dude), Saturday, 20 October 2012 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

ha, no idea. this station existed circa 2002-04 and I am thus possibly the most knowledgeable person about early 2000s can-hop in america

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:00 (thirteen years ago)

btw listening to "Adorn" today and trying to think of how rare it is that you hear a big R&B hit that was pretty much entirely performed, written and produced by one person (like, even The-Dream's big hits all had co-producers).

awful wedded wein (some dude), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:02 (thirteen years ago)

what about Kells tho? (not to disprove you, but another example)

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:04 (thirteen years ago)

no yeah that's a good point, i was trying to think of someone with semi-recent hits who'd be relevenat to that discussion and that's totally who was on the tip of my tongue (although i've never been clear on whether R. is super hands on w/ the beat-making or always has co-producers in the mix)

awful wedded wein (some dude), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

Marsha Ambrosius self-wrote and -produced a few tracks on her last album but they weren't the hits.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:07 (thirteen years ago)

from what I understand, Kells usually produces completely by himself but will occasionally have coproducers and for a couple projects has farmed out most of the production

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

I guess his only albums where he's done that are Untitled and to a lesser extent R.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

he also tends to use session musicians on some of his more lush stuff, compared to "Adorn" being just a guy programming everything. but still yeah good call w/ kells.

awful wedded wein (some dude), Saturday, 20 October 2012 21:20 (thirteen years ago)

OHHHH

I read this thread on my phone while drunk on the night bus just now and was really confused cuz it looked like you were talking about kelis

lex pretend, Saturday, 20 October 2012 23:01 (thirteen years ago)

now the "i ain't talkin kelis" line from "clique" is stuck in my head

skeevy wonder (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 21 October 2012 03:19 (thirteen years ago)

DID u live in MI? is the q I meant to ask

skeevy wonder (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 21 October 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

I've lived within 45 miles of Detroit my whole life and have never had trouble picking up any of the R&B stations.

Andy K, Sunday, 21 October 2012 03:34 (thirteen years ago)

rev, vancouver > seattle, for real

heiswagger (rennavate), Sunday, 21 October 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Sunday, 21 October 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

has no one discussed the full track-by-track commentary on spotify? his divergent, almost rhetorical questions are awesome, 'kaleidoscope dream' and 'candles in the sun' specifically

http://open.spotify.com/album/6VcyVQu3YmkzIWvxHVyCCB

also this album taught me how to spell kaleidoscope correctly and for that, miguel, i thank you

nose, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

i'd been meaning to listen to that (after generally avoiding every spotify commentary)

Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

hay everybody, this album is really really good

i kinda don't like the re-do of candles in the sun, seems like it wouldn't even make sense if you didn't know the ADC version

goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

thank you, i was starting to feel like the only person here who sees that version as a downgrade and a bum note for the album

Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i feel the same way

the rest of this album is ridiculously good though

all mods con (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

I feel equally blah about both versions. It would have been the weakest song on the album either way.

i like how simple, loose and reverb-y his guitar playing is, kind of a wildcard element in the sound

goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)

I thought he played more guitar but "Pussy is Mine" is the only song on which no one else gets credit.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

oh ha, i should have hedged with "the" instead of "his" but i had assumed it was him...

goole, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:14 (thirteen years ago)

He didn't play it on "Arch & Point"?

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

this is insane

OMG

lex pretend, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

oh god. that's almost as bad as the wiki page for Kendrick's joint.

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

the version of the album i downloaded has these really loud rave synths all over and are all tagged "remixed by sh0rty" :-(

flopson, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

lol gross

I don't think anyone has mentioned this but I love how much tape hiss there is on "Arch & Point"

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

He didn't play it on "Arch & Point"?

I thought he did :(

Ace job putting his fingers on the right frets though.

xposts YOLO imagery! wut

Roz, Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:23 (thirteen years ago)

I've been kind of disappointed to see that he doesn't seem to play that song live at all. :(

thraeds of life (The Reverend), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:24 (thirteen years ago)

it does seem like it should be a live staple, doesn't it

strangely heartened to see that miggy has warranted some obsessive wiki attention

Victory Goon (some dude), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

It transitions into the rock song "Arch & Point", which has lascivious lyrics,[30] sexually-charged ballet metaphors,[22] bare power pop elements,[6] plopping percussion, and an acoustic guitar coda.[17]

#plop

My least favorite song is "Where's the Fun in Forever?" by far. I actually kind of like teh album version of "Candles in the Sun" better than the ADC version, the album version is appropriately rejigged as an Album Closer that works really well, throbs with this "important statement" vibe that isn't in-your-face or preachy, also I really like the hazier feel, and those drum fills when he says "heros often get SHOT" are amazing.

king louie riel (rennavate), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

i also think the john lennon interview at the end of the adc is a little obvious

king louie riel (rennavate), Tuesday, 30 October 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

strong yolo imagery in beyond good & evil
