Yeah I hate clicking through endless Youtubes as well but the recommendations on those threads are all good, I tend to seek them out as MP3s or on Spotify if I like the basic sound of them.

xpost.

I've got the RW on CD, but it's packed away (as is my entire life at the moment) so I can't get at it for a while.

Everything being packed away is part of the motivation for this thread, actually. My life's a stressful mess right now and I hoped I'd get some nice recommendations to cheer me up. Sadly I got told off instead.

Nick if there's any area that you specifically feel you don't know much about and would like to explore, let us know.

The list of stuff you already like is fairly indie which I say not as a criticism but more to note that it's really only a subset (or subset of subsets) of dance/electronic music.

Tim F, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:25 (thirteen years ago)

Aye, I'm very aware that I'm pretty indie in my tastes, and it's partly a desire to extend beyond that which is behind this - I just don't know what direction to go in.

Maybe scan through that rolling DJs post your mixes thread? If I had more time, I'd got through all of them. Dance is a weird one cos it's often consumed as part of a mix, so listening to tracks as part of a set is often more palatable than just listening to individual tracks from beginning to end like you would a pop single.

What about Tropical 2, you heard that yet?

thread?

where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:38 (thirteen years ago)

You know, maybe the real question here is "how do you get into and hear about music in (given genre)"? I guess we had those "What got you into Metal" threads a while back.

where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:52 (thirteen years ago)

what got you into dance music?

what got you out of dance music?

nashwan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:54 (thirteen years ago)

no the real question is why try to get into something if it don't happen au naturel? no snark

Straight up Sickman, get Michael Mayer's Immer cd on Kompakt...greatest mix of the 00s.

we're talking about people being civil to each other and showing some basic respect for each other, not treat like retarded Down's syndrome cases

Couldn't you just make the same point without suggesting that disabled people don't deserve any civility and are 'retards'? I can appreciate it might have just been a clumsy faux pas, but you ought to be a lot better than that.

Sorry to interrupt the music discussion, not trying to start anything. I am out of here.

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:29 (thirteen years ago)

i agree Damo. there's a flag post button. and sorry i like Marcello but that kinda speech needs running off-board i think

Immer is on my Amazon wishlist, actually. As is Orchestra of Bubbles, Mastered by Guy at the Exchange, latest Dan Deacon, Villalobos' ECM thing, Metro Area, Kelley Polar...

no the real question is why try to get into something if it don't happen au naturel? no snark

How does anyone get into anything 'au naturel'? I'm not sure 'au naturel' exists, and I'm also not sure there's anything wrong with waking up one day and deciding "today's the day I get into jazz / minimal / salsa / handball / ultimate frisbee / middle eastern food" - curiosity and happenstance encounters are both great inspirations for interests and passions.

How did I get into dance / electronic music? Two separate events: firstly the disco when I was 11 or 12, and stuff like Groove Is In The Heart and Voodoo Ray, and secondly, a gnawing perception at about 15/16 that there was more to msuic than Pearl Jam, whicb became a full-on epiphany when I bought In Sides by Orbital / Post by Bjork / Richard D James album by Aphex Twin / 2nd Toughest by Underworld.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:37 (thirteen years ago)

as i say nick i wasn't being sarky, it's just alien to my spirit to think "i wanna get into this" rather than say, "i dig this i wanna dig deeper"

thread lock holiday (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

get Michael Mayer's Immer cd on Kompakt..

this.

along with volumes 2 and 3.

xpost

mark e, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:39 (thirteen years ago)

that Villalobos ECM album is patchy imo btw, closer to Autechre/Pan Sonic territory - guys i love, but this is weaker - not dancey at all

I'm also not sure there's anything wrong with waking up one day and deciding "today's the day I get into jazz / minimal / salsa / handball / ultimate frisbee / middle eastern food"

nothing wrong with it per se but i do agree it prob won't "work" in terms of getting you into something. i've often tried stuff out in this way but usually more slowly evolved into stuff via my own path. i think this is a lot easier.

On reflection ILx shouldn't be about Asperger's cases nitpicking word by trainspotting word by misinterpreted word when they should be worrying about real issues either. The only place any of that was "suggested" was in your diseased, poisoned mind.

That good enough for you?

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:45 (thirteen years ago)

that's twice i've flagged you. seriously. do you think that's in any way ok?

thread lock holiday (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:46 (thirteen years ago)

Sick, definitely check out Theo Parrish. You mentioned Robag Wruhme not being psychedelic enough... Theo's stuff is truly psychedelic in that its strangeness is deeply woven into the music (rather than feeling tacked-on or like flourishes). There's a roughness and a handmade quality to it that feels intimate and draws you in (if you're into that sort of feeling). The album Parallel Dimensions (2000) is a good starting point, I think.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:47 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, I could have retorted "Couldn't you just get a life/have sex" but that would have been a cheap shot.

God help boring 1985 leftie nitpickers arguing over nothing while the country slowly starves/drowns (whichever comes sooner).

But let's get out of here before this turns into the usual ILx bullying which attracts so many posters and readers.

Oh btw I have Asperger's. Maybe you're the one who should think before posting.

yeah you got my number. silly me for getting queasy over disablist slurs.

Marcello i work with people with Asperger's. I call them when they use unnecessarily offensive language too, not cos i'm a prissy liberal but because shit isn't right and i think they need to be told.

thread lock holiday (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:53 (thirteen years ago)

in all sincerity, you are better than that line.

thread lock holiday (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:55 (thirteen years ago)

sucks when people with Asperger's are also, unrelatedly, ridiculous hypocritical cunts

nashwan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 12:58 (thirteen years ago)

how did this thread take this turn

anyway I was going to recommend some older stuff before I saw the "last ten years" caveat, where I think I'm just about as at sea, so I was going to scrape a few suggestions off of this thread but instead I think I will go back to laughing at reddit

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:13 (thirteen years ago)

V happy to receive older recommendations too.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

Looking at your likes you might like Shigeto's last two albums, kind of like Flying Lotus only a little more melodic?

This too.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:27 (thirteen years ago)

Were you ever up on the early to mid 90s acid, a la Exposure, Burger Industries, Mike Ink, 80 AUM, Elevator 101, etc etc? A bunch of them are on this old comp which is one of my favorite things of all time:

http://www.discogs.com/Various-Rave-On/master/24927

Pretty much every track on here is amazing, running through acid, progressive house, straight-up rave/hardcore, and new beatish techno stuff; the only one I never really fully embraced was the Speedy J track.

The Owls of Ja Rule (DJP), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

Oh for older stuff, go listen to Mouse on Mars' first 2 or 3 albums, if you're not already familiar.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, I like Shigeto. Oh and Slugabed's good too.

V familiar with Mouse on Mars. Never heard of anything DJP just mentioned!

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

Oh hell yeah, DJP... Sick, you need to hear Las Vegas by Burger/Ink--one of my favorite electronic records ever.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

Also, have you checked out much Hawtin/Plastikman? Also a wealth of goodness there.

This is kind a little like some of your disco likes, although I'd go check out Metro Area or Danny Wang first if you haven't heard much of them.

I know "Peak Experience" by Exposure is not going to be everyone's bag, especially since it starts out with over a minute of fucking around with filters on a monotone, but to my mind it's a perfect melding of trance-inducing stasis mixed in with rhythmic interplay; once the drums and sound effects get going and little sonic details start fading in and out, all while that monotone keeps wobbling away through different filters, it's fucking great. It's really a musical story told through rhythm, with all of the peaks and valleys and shade of a great melody only without the actual melody:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu9jGX9w5Pw

Sadly I don't think you get the full rumble of the bass on this, which also helps bolster and ground the stasis of the first minute, but when the drums start in the whole thing turns into a futuristic drum corps marching cadence and is just the best fucking thing

Oh for newer weird melodic not quite techno, Actress is pretty cool.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:46 (thirteen years ago)

Tempted to post some crunchy Perc or Ancient Methods tunes, maybe not quite that mean.

Josiah Alan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

Contrast that Exposure track to the Sonic Beat mix of "Elevation" by G.T.O., which also appears on Rave On! in edit form:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s38Nd7v46Q8

This is just straight up ravey hardcore greatness, unfiltered melodic id music designed to get your ass shaking and your hands waving in the air, and a totally different beast from the dronier, more sinister original mix (which btw is also awesome)

If you can find a copy of the Rave On! comp in a used bin somewhere, it is SO WORTH IT.

Ok nother new one. This'd be on the "bass" side of things.
