correction: "youtube POSTS."
Only if it's very simple talk that doesn't intimidate anyone or use any words that they might not understand, like the names of genres.

has the fight started yet?
― nashwan, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:38 (thirteen years ago)
sorry matt but it's also patronising, sneery gatekeeper talk like yours that drives people away from these threads and ilx in general.
― Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:41 (thirteen years ago)
I mean Marcello you're the one who complains about newspaper music sections treating readers like they're idiots who can't use Google. What exactly is the difference here.
I mean if you're looking to find out about music there's no substitute for actually listening to it and THEN talking about whether you like it and why, as happens on multiple threads, rather than detailing reasons why you can't listen to it or expecting people to spoonfeed you.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:43 (thirteen years ago)
Also it's not "gatekeeper talk" if you're actually saying "dive in and explore" rather than "keep out".
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:47 (thirteen years ago)
this is a pretty babyish and unproductive argument. thread's been started and people are recommending things, so let's be cool. Matt and Marcello's points are equally valid. I'm kind of put off checking out the swag threads because AFAIK they're a whole tangle of in-jokes, slang terms and references to obscure mixtapes, which is great if you're actively involved in all that, but kind of bewildering for the rest of us. Then again I also don't check that thread out because I'm a lazy bugger who can't be bothered to spend a couple of hours getting my head around what is essentially a bunch of YouTubes and recommendations.
― where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:48 (thirteen years ago)
it's not even just the rolling threads, people recommend their favourite tracks (of the year, of the moment, of all time) all day every day on ilm, and if you're incurious enough to check them out then (or to ask people about them) then why should you expect people to do the legwork for you here? especially when you're about as vague as it's even possible to be.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:49 (thirteen years ago)
(FWIW I'm not really talking about the original poster here, it's just an exasperating attitude in general).
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:50 (thirteen years ago)
starting threads for/about oneself are just poor etiquette in general though tbh
frame it in more general terms - "what are your favourite electronic singles ever" or something and you might have got a better response
though seeing as ilm is doing massive polls on precisely that subject atm it would be as redundant as this tbh
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:51 (thirteen years ago)
and from my pov, barely a day goes by when i don't recommend music i love - in my work or on twitter or this is my jam or all over the place here etc. if you weren't paying attention then why would i repeat myself yet again in a thread specially for you?
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 09:54 (thirteen years ago)
There's no denying that genres, particularly dance music genres, have a tendency to breed gatekeepers who'll shoot down noobs for not knowing the difference between one micro-trend to another, or what begat what, or enthusing about a track that's been out for "months now". For those who are more accustomed to album-based music, the way that dance evolves and spreads its legacy over time in the way that it does can feel a bit fluctuous, and I think that can sometimes work as a barrier for some people in trying to make the crossover. I dunno...
― where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 10:01 (thirteen years ago)
didn't you read what southall posted above (xp)?
because ilx is not an elitist forum for know-alls. if you want that go to dissensus. the reason people come here is to DISCUSS music and consider each other's opinions. Dog Latin is probably OTM. there's no conflict between what i say about newspapers and messageboards becuase they are entirely different things with different aims and different types of audience. we're not talking about spoonfeeding. we're talking about people being civil to each other and showing some basic respect for each other, not treat like retarded Down's syndrome cases people who don't happen to have flown to Milan for ten minutes in May 2009 to get that super-limited but superior 12" remix and lord it sneeringly over people who aren't in your self-appointed clique or go "BUT MC you said in that thread back in 2004 hyuk hyuk." it's not a fiefdom but neither is it the school debating society. there's a middle ground which is to be preferred to effectively locking people out because they don't know your in-jokes or slang or haven't gone through ten thousand previous ilx threads to find out what it's about.

because ilx is not an elitist forum for know-alls. if you want that go to dissensus.
I agree w/ this but also feel like it's why no-one has anything to worry about ultimately. the way ILM and/or ILX goes about its business largely stifles ppl who are superior blowhards about one very particular strain of music. last person that made any ~impact~ doing that was probably pipecock
to put it another way Dissensus and Terminal Boredom and DFFD are all good places to browse and pick up tips from folks who are deep in the rabbithole but you couldn't pay me to post on any of them

If you think starting a personal thread is a dick move, just ignore it and move on. We have lots of other threads.
I'm no less of a dilettante than Mr. Mouthy, but going by the list he posted we have similar taste so here are some tracks that come to mind (mostly but not all recent releases):
Mano Le Tough - Let's Love Baby/She SighedFloating Points - FarukxIlya Santana - Crystal SeaDJ Nate - PoetryMungolian Jetset - We are the Shining (Dan Lissvik Version)Philipp Matalla - Space LineFatima Al Qadiri - D-medleyFatima - Red LightCFCF - The RiverBjork - Tesla (Omar Souleyman Remix)Robag Wruhme - Thora VukkShit Robot - Take 'Em UpChaim - Alive
― fish frosch (seandalai), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 10:46 (thirteen years ago)
Thora Vukk is such a great album. Sicko, you'd love it if you havne't check already.
― where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 10:49 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I've got the Robag Wruhme album, and quite liked it but wasn't blown away: actually found it a little vatic / empty / disengaging, as I recall. Not psychedelic / poppy enough for my tastes, perhaps? Seem to remember enjoying the final track (sampled kids' voices?).
seandalai, thank you - that's all I was after, a list of tunes that I can go and investigate. I don't particularly like Youtube as an interface for music and surfing through songs via it isn't something I've enjoyed doing, though I'm not sure why.
Civility and basic respect are the two key things here, for me, both of which have spectaculary disappeared from this thread at points. And then, thankfully, reappeared to some extent. If you don't like individual threads, or threads by a specific individual, then they're very easy to ignore by simply not looking at them.
Aside from moderators moderating foul & abusive behaviour etc, there is no code of conduct or statement of rules or guide to posting or etiquette or anything else for ILX, not that I'm aware of. This forum is a pretty egalitarian place, and I've as much right to post on it and start threads soliciting opinions as anyone else has to post their opinions on it; equally, people have the right to ignore solicitations and ignore opinions if they so choose. To suggest that it's arrogant to solicit opinions isn't helpful.
Rob M; thank you, I'm pretty familiar with Cluster / Tangerine Dream and the whole Kosmische axis - I guess I'm more after stuff from the last ten years or so.
Matt DC, as ever you're being very reasonable. I shall investigate the soft/sad techno thread.
― comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:07 (thirteen years ago)
I first listened to it while going up in a plane(!) so maybe it was that context that endeared me so much to it. It's all very much of a piece and quite a nice, not too long, listen. Great headphone music and I really like the organic nature of the sounds he's using (there's a great moment on the track which I think is called something like Prognosem Bomf or something, where it's clear the drum is simply him rapping his knuckles on a desk, but it's so effective nevertheless). And the little "brucke" sections are really neat (stereo panning + lots of dynamic range). I'd say give it another go if you can as I reckon you could grow to like it.
― where is el airoporto? (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:16 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah the RW rec was a proxy for the album; for some reason I can't remember I had starred that particular track.
― fish frosch (seandalai), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:20 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah I hate clicking through endless Youtubes as well but the recommendations on those threads are all good, I tend to seek them out as MP3s or on Spotify if I like the basic sound of them.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:22 (thirteen years ago)
xpost.
I've got the RW on CD, but it's packed away (as is my entire life at the moment) so I can't get at it for a while.
Everything being packed away is part of the motivation for this thread, actually. My life's a stressful mess right now and I hoped I'd get some nice recommendations to cheer me up. Sadly I got told off instead.

Nick if there's any area that you specifically feel you don't know much about and would like to explore, let us know.
The list of stuff you already like is fairly indie which I say not as a criticism but more to note that it's really only a subset (or subset of subsets) of dance/electronic music.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 11:25 (thirteen years ago)
Aye, I'm very aware that I'm pretty indie in my tastes, and it's partly a desire to extend beyond that which is behind this - I just don't know what direction to go in.

Maybe scan through that rolling DJs post your mixes thread? If I had more time, I'd got through all of them. Dance is a weird one cos it's often consumed as part of a mix, so listening to tracks as part of a set is often more palatable than just listening to individual tracks from beginning to end like you would a pop single.
What about Tropical 2, you heard that yet?

Immer is on my Amazon wishlist, actually. As is Orchestra of Bubbles, Mastered by Guy at the Exchange, latest Dan Deacon, Villalobos' ECM thing, Metro Area, Kelley Polar...
How does anyone get into anything 'au naturel'? I'm not sure 'au naturel' exists, and I'm also not sure there's anything wrong with waking up one day and deciding "today's the day I get into jazz / minimal / salsa / handball / ultimate frisbee / middle eastern food" - curiosity and happenstance encounters are both great inspirations for interests and passions.
How did I get into dance / electronic music? Two separate events: firstly the disco when I was 11 or 12, and stuff like Groove Is In The Heart and Voodoo Ray, and secondly, a gnawing perception at about 15/16 that there was more to msuic than Pearl Jam, whicb became a full-on epiphany when I bought In Sides by Orbital / Post by Bjork / Richard D James album by Aphex Twin / 2nd Toughest by Underworld.

nothing wrong with it per se but i do agree it prob won't "work" in terms of getting you into something. i've often tried stuff out in this way but usually more slowly evolved into stuff via my own path. i think this is a lot easier.

Sick, definitely check out Theo Parrish. You mentioned Robag Wruhme not being psychedelic enough... Theo's stuff is truly psychedelic in that its strangeness is deeply woven into the music (rather than feeling tacked-on or like flourishes). There's a roughness and a handmade quality to it that feels intimate and draws you in (if you're into that sort of feeling). The album Parallel Dimensions (2000) is a good starting point, I think.

It's one of the reasons I value ILX polls - I put together Spotify playlists of all the tracks I haven't heard and stumble across beauties like this and (from the same poll) Richard Davis's astonishing Bring Me Closer, which I think Sick would also love.

i am rockist too but i found it tough to get into dance music thru trax/singles exclusively, despite that being in general my fav way to listen to music. and i barely like any dance albums. so many house/techno trax start off quietly with like a minute of just drums, a little bass, everything else slowly entering the mix, then eventually peter out in a similar way. it can be p exasperating if you listen to a lot in sequence. lately i'm listening to crazy amounts of dance music but exclusively thru mixes, they usually cut to the goods & expose you to way more stuff than downloading/buying individual trax ever could, i recommend check out the thread entitled "your favourite mixes of 2012, fuck"
