and i think a trip to haiti is in order for those guys:

"Montreal's a place that's always losing its charm. It's a corrupt city in a corrupt province, where somehow the light rings loudly anyhow. So many crazy plans hatched in spite of, so many minor miracles. The dust of this place is caked into our scalps and beneath our nails – there would be no band if it weren't for this lovely rotten town."

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

the dirty stinking dust of motreal. mon dieu!

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)

But now we all live in harder times, now a whole lot of bands react to the current heaviness by privileging the party times, like some weird Scientology will-to-power bullshit, hit that hi-hat with a square's fist until we all make it to heaven, until Sunday morning's bringdown. Self-conscious good vibes like love-handles poking through some 22-year-old's American Apparel T-shirt at some joint where you can only dance once you pay a $10 cover charge just to listen to some internet king's iPod.

haha good grief

I for one applaud them for successfully monetizing about six or seven different tropes of DIY/punk rock aesthetic/anti-nationalism/"classical music"/"metal"/"mystery politix" and have done so in a way that has mostly benefitted their listeners and other folks in their city and my city and possibly yours, but yeah.

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

I mean, I <3 them but yeah.

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)

they haven't benefited anyone from my city

iatee, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:37 (thirteen years ago)

We're all of us born beneath the weight of piss-poor governance. It's a miracle that so many of us make it through our teens. Politics is for politicians and all our politicians have the whiff of death to them, it's why they wear so much perfume and cologne, it's why they wear brightly coloured scarves and ties, just to distract from the pallor of their skin. So many of us just want to live away from that stench – we stagger towards the light awkwardly, astonished that so many of us are staggering together thusly, amen.

iatee, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:38 (thirteen years ago)

these people are like 43 y/os now, aren't they?

iatee, Sunday, 14 October 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

haha wow that interview is even more Society is in the gutter than the indie rock twitter

We were poor but we were happy. We knew the value of things. We never wondered about the value of valuing things.

It's a shambles.

@hateindierock You may want to re-read a lot of your tweets! I get that it's coming from an EXTREMELY EARNEST place, but seriously...

buzza, Sunday, 14 October 2012 17:35 (thirteen years ago)

I like that the Godspeed folks answer interview requests as a collective. Laibach used to do that. But they don't have a one-liner 1/1000 as good as Laibach's "Pop is music for sheep, and we are wolves disguised as shepherds."

誤訳侮辱, Sunday, 14 October 2012 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

ah for the wit and wisdom of Laibach.

a friend of mine had dinner with Laibach last week. don't know if they ordered the lamb.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 17:42 (thirteen years ago)

o man that godspeed thing, unbelievable

--bob marley (lag∞n), Sunday, 14 October 2012 17:46 (thirteen years ago)

GYBE bux, studio space and personnel were instrumental in the creation many of my favourite local records (Eric Chenaux "Dull Lights") so I have a large reserve of patience and goodwill for "the stench! the apathy!" etc. and also I love ASMZ

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 14 October 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

it's cool, dude. we all have friends and family. we cringe, we love.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

and hey my brother just helped put on a godspeed show and 800 people came. that helped his town. and he made 200 bucks. that's like weed for a week. they're spreading cheer.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

ugh am I always the "no no guys he's cool" guy, sometimes I feel like it

flamboyant goon tie included, Sunday, 14 October 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

dear @hateindierock: should i go see krs-one at the ucsd student coop next month?

the late great, Sunday, 14 October 2012 19:52 (thirteen years ago)

hateindierock is really bananka, no?

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 14 October 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

well its not the person who started this thread anyway. i checked and they love xiu xiu, dan deacon, husker du, and cat power. and that's very serious indie love, not hate.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)

if you still have any reaction at all to gybe's schtick i don't even know.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 14 October 2012 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

a taste for the pessimistic and slipshod is an affection the well-to-do alone can afford to indulge in a society growing increasingly rigid in its class stratification ~ my takeaway from "mr." ihateindierock. i am thinking "he" reads mssr. bourdieu

reggie (qualmsley), Sunday, 14 October 2012 21:01 (thirteen years ago)

wow this guy has succeeded at jackin' pop discourse for a whole weekend, a+ everybody

maura, Sunday, 14 October 2012 21:14 (thirteen years ago)

not sure an ilx thread half-concerned w/ a gybe interview counts as taking over pop discourse.... unless you're dropping a hint that jackin' pop is coming back this year in which case awesome

Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 21:19 (thirteen years ago)

I've been hearing about this dude (it has to be a dude) since Friday and he's already inspired a parody Twitter.

maura, Sunday, 14 October 2012 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

8. Start fresh today: break up your band, cut your hair, and get live with it. Does your music really need to be public? Maybe?

Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

jackin pop is the most pressing thing discussed here so far

does your music really need to be pubic? @shaveindiecock

the late great, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

can definitely see the walking dead t.v. show using new swans and new gybe as soundtrack music. they are the harbingers of nu-zombification post-explosions under friday night lights consumer hegemony. plus, they could all probably use the money. @willmakedystopianindierockforfood

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:50 (thirteen years ago)

i mean they were the old harbingers too it just took people a while to catch up.

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:50 (thirteen years ago)

yeah no shit. what the fuck is wrong with everyone (i'm not talking this thread)

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:51 (thirteen years ago)

their feelings are unspeakable iirc

a hauntingly unemployed american (difficult listening hour), Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:52 (thirteen years ago)

dude touched a twitter nerve. is it that hard to do?

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:55 (thirteen years ago)

it should be!

people on the internet have no self-control

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

so is op the author of this?

Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

i guess i'm surprised that people actually still care about "indie rock" in any respect

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

thankfully I checked my telex this weekend and saw no messages related to this guy.

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

he has been posting about godspeed in another thread...

Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

no i already said i did a search and the op loves indie rock.

x-post

scott seward, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

yo, op, if you are the author you should give ilx a shoutout for being capitalist-free haven for restless intellectuals

xp oh, too bad

Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

maybe ppl are craving a more theoretical/critical grappling w/ current music culture and they aren't being satisfied elsewhere

(this is obv my most wishful thinking)

Mordy, Sunday, 14 October 2012 22:59 (thirteen years ago)

i imagine that the person who created this account has more self-respect than to self-promote on ilx but you never know

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

it's a shame the internet failed to provide a theoretical grappling with music culture

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 14 October 2012 23:00 (thirteen years ago)

he doesn't have the self-respect to not post reactionary nonsense tweets
