Only just catchin up with the Lil Reese tape after the Us remix, but that said, Beef is a huge track.

Q: should there be a separate drill thread? For me, this is has such a dominant sound of 2012.

why? It's just rap music

stop rubbing your hands together with excitement that someone's gonna get shot again, fuck beef
― some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 12:07 (thirteen years ago)
so are ppl really investing in this idea that "drill music" is like a discreet genre?
― rap game klaus nomi (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 13 October 2012 13:49 (thirteen years ago)
lol i guess so!
― some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)
Also why I'm reluctant to make a thread for it. Actually stopped listening to anything from GBE after Lil JoJo's murder. Couldn't really stomach it. But this week, I went through the tapes from Reese and Durk after the remastered L's Anthem, then Us remix, and despite everything these records still feel somehow significant.
A genre to itself, no I don't think so. I don't listen to tons of hip-hop, but I can't remember something so caught up with gang culture tbh. I mean, the lyrics for most of this are basically gang shout outs, often not much more. So describing something like Beef as a huge track is probably not smart description, but then I don't really know how I should be engaging with any of it. There is something relentless compelling, single-minded and even disturbing about it...

this might have more to do with your limited frame of reference, just sayin

its just a particular sound from a particular place i dont think anyone's claiming its a new gener

*genre
i.e. drill is just a particular regional variation on rap music
― The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Saturday, 13 October 2012 19:40 (thirteen years ago)
I was having coffee in a McDonald's in Chicago this week, and one guy at a table of four next to me was playing his own song through his phone (DIY and clumsy) and one of his friends said "That's drill-hop you're doing" and the other guy said "What?" and the guy said "Drill-hop. You're doing it and you don't even know what it's called."
― pretty even gender split (Eazy), Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:03 (thirteen years ago)
if you do something DIY and clumsy with a drill you're gonna really fuck up your home renovation project iirc
― some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)
The way Jeezy sees it, Gucci is just upset that the Snowman has yet to collaborate with him after DJ Drama tried to broker peace between them in 2009. "He called a few times. I just told him it wasn't a good idea, we past that. I don't want to go backwards," he said. "He reached out a few times. I didn't do the records, so I guess he feel a way. I guess he didn't take his medicine that day. Short Bus Shawty."
does this even seem likely / do ppl believe it ? idgi

why do you care? they need to let it go, fuck em both for getting into the bullshit again after years of moving on
― some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:22 (thirteen years ago)
'why do i care'? really?
it seems p central to what one of my favorite rap artists is up to at the moment, that doesnt mean im rubbing my hands in glee at it. im just trying to understand the context
― The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)
i dunno you've seemed pretty unenthusiastic about almost everything gucci's done the last couple years (not that i blame you!), so throwing up the "gucci's back!" bat signal as soon as there's beef is just very distasteful to me
― some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
hes back in the spotlight for the first time & his two tapes this year are stronger than the stuff he did in 2011. ppl are paying attention to him again after writing him off a year ago.
― The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)
& not just for the beef -- theres a genuine interest in his shit again, i hear a lot of buzz from ppl looking forward to the tape this week
eh there has been some whiff 'comeback' for like every other tape he's done for the last couple years, i'll believe it when something really sticks. imo the 2 tapes this year weren't shit. and "truth" sucks.
― some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:33 (thirteen years ago)
trap back def had more buzz & interest than writings on the wall ii. Some of those singles have gotten radio & club play at least around here (here being, where i lived until 2 weeks ago)
― The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:35 (thirteen years ago)
i will give you that "plain jane" is probably the only new gucci song i've heard a dj touch in a year or two, but it's not like he's ever going to operate at half the level of his peak, commercially or creatively
― some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 20:40 (thirteen years ago)
i'm not quite sure why people look forward to gucci tapes anymore but i do agree that he sounds more alive on the jeezy diss than he has in a while
― lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 13 October 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

I really really like DGainz's outdoors videos. I've been missing that everybody out in the streets smiling and dancing community feeling lately. Especially when it comes to women. There are too many videos these days with bored models hanging out in big empty villas while the rappers are rapping and no communication whatsoever. DGainz brought smiling back. That's one of the best things about the whole Chicago scene thing to me.

― Gelados n cream (longneck), Thursday, 18 October 2012 13:42 (thirteen years ago)
Trap God is almost good enough to divert my attention from Kendrick btw. I've only listened once but it feels even better than Trap Back, which makes this a hell of a strong year for the Gucc.
Frenchie and Ice Burgundy dropping tapes on the same day just seems strange though.
― Gelados n cream (longneck), Thursday, 18 October 2012 13:44 (thirteen years ago)
yo gotti delayed his mixtape release by one day after gucci tweeted that non-bricksquad ppl dropping tapes 10/17 better fall back. true story.
― zvookster, Thursday, 18 October 2012 14:49 (thirteen years ago)
the gucci is cool but i think al may be more right -- he's got his voice back, (in the vague metaphorical sense of 'voice' like his inner voice or w/e) vs. say 'writings on the wall 2' but the songs arent quite all there for me
sorta like mr. zone 6 that way maybe?
― fanute da croupier (D-40), Thursday, 18 October 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)
I don't know about that. I still play Trap Back all the time and its opening stretch (Back In 95 - Quiet - Walking Lick - Plain Jane - Get It Back - Trapback) is among my favorite stretches this year. I'm Up felt a bit long and lumpy, but from playing Trap God only once I got really exited about how it moved from effortlessly from strength to strength. Not saying it's THAT good cause I obv haven't lived with it enough, but I haven't really listened to any other similar tapes/albums this year that have been as consistently rewarding as these three have. Trap God was up against the Kendrick today (which might end up as AOTY to me) and if it had sounded half-weak I would have just turned it off instantly.
I tend to enjoy even Gucci's weaker stuff though.

i'm still gonna keep bugging deej and j0rdan or whoever to do some kind of definitive list of the best post-peak gucci tracks, because there's a hell of a lot to cherrypick from now
― some dude, Thursday, 18 October 2012 16:27 (thirteen years ago)
i really like trap god after .9 listens, not as good as trap back, but maybe better than i'm up.
― heiswagger (rennavate), Thursday, 18 October 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
then again i think trap back is incredible, one of gucci's best mixtapes, period

― Gelados n cream (longneck), Thursday, 18 October 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)

brick fair is my favorite zaytoven beat this year, classic

Yep.
There are days when I prefer Trap Back to Channel Orange.
