I love how abrasive this album is compared to the last one!

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it but have to say, I hope the next one is less abrasive!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Would it be wrong to say this is a more chicago house-style album?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, maybe just steam machine.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

My original post was a long ass affair, in which I think the words "great" and "mentalists" were employed.

The USE-ness of the title track aside, I'm generally feeling the 5 other tracks I heard ('Make Love' must be a fake-out looper tho').

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does the title track wait until the final minute to interest me more?

Captain GRRRios' Giggletits (Barima), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

this very easily could have been a ten-track, 65 minute album. i wonder if it would have been better for it?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

err...no, the actual length is perfect. Totally in tune with the abrasive quality of the music.

Jackwithbrain OTM in re. freshness, etc.

Omar (Omar), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't believe ppl were hating on "Technologic." Its time for the percolator.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahahah this is gonna be just like discovery where everyone hates on it them comes around in the end, I can tell.

Oh man the synths on the last track are so wonderful.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Shall I'll take the honours then and proclaim it my album of the year? :) (I mean I did say Discovery was one of the best album ever, after a couple of listens IIRC. ;)

Omar (Omar), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope it sounds like Surrender to the Night!
many xposts

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i hope this isn't like devin dazzle where i hate on it and then later hate on it even more

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

It is very lonely being the only person on ILM who doesn't think Daft Punk are dance messiahs.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

(AKA "Dan is very predicatably unmoved by Daft Punk the further they get from 'Revolution 909'" redux.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think they're dance messiahs, m'friend, but I have to say so far it all sounds really great. Then again I'm only a couple of songs in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

they're indie messiahs!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Stereolab did release a song or two by Darlin' back in 1993, so there ya go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The last track is making me euphoric.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Then again I'm only a couple of songs in.

ha, exactly what i thought. incidentally, as much as i love the idea of 'Discovery' being the best album in years on paper (apart from Kid A and Loveless obviously), it never was for me. i will probably love Human After All as much as Discovery seeing as how my reaction to Discovery the first time is pretty similar to how i'm feeling about HAA now.

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

steam machine reminds me of NIN!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 January 2005 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

she's right

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah, okay maybe I will reconsider my reaction to the single if there's a NIN pastiche on the album.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost: yep

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

It also reminded me of Junior Boys "Under the Sun" for some reason.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Steam Machine is not as good as The Tosser's Song by Lacquer which does the same 'repetetive riff that will sound brain elasticating when fucked in a club thing', but not as good, and without the vocals.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahah, good call Teeny! I just finished listening to that.

Five songs now and frankly this is a really good Depeche Mode-style album. No problems with it at all! Dan I suspect you will like this very much. Think of it this way -- if "Da Funk" is actually a rewrite of "Never Let Me Down Again" not scaled for arenas...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

My reaction right now is confined solely to "Robot Rock"; I may change my mind once I hear the rest of it (especially if there's a NIN song on it, wow!).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Not as good as being not as good as something? What am I talking about?

Make Love is gorgeous but why are the beats so weedy? With a proper chunky 4/4 kick behind it that track could've been a proper summer Glasto-style let it all wash over you think like Love Story.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:28 (twenty-one years ago)

remix it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Now what we were talking about on the New Beat thread and elsewhere about industrial? IT'S ALL COMING BACK, SCOFFERS!

Holy hell! Actually "The Brainwasher" is even MORE industrial! Like if Front Line Assembly didn't keep rewriting the same song over again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, be fair; FLA wrote a different song for every album.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Brainwasher = fucking hell this rules. This deserves to be on the 2005 electrohouse thread. And it has a great demonic voice half way through. It also veers closer to techno than anything on Discovery.

(Dan you will definitely like this one)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, be fair; FLA wrote a different song for every album.

I stand abashed.

Matt DC is right. "Television," meanwhile, mixes a bit of the industrial atmosphere with other things...fuck, this IS the album that answers Donut Christ's lament on this very subject. A good thing too, now I get to see everyone finally admit you were all rivetheads to start with. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I am liking Television Rules The Nation as well. Reminds me of the Karl Bartos album from last year.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"the brainwasher" is my favorite, i think.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Television Rules The Nation sounds like a Gary Numan/Kraftwerk mash-up...

stephen morris, Monday, 24 January 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

And what on earth is wrong with that?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

NOT ONE THING

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Nothing is wrong with that!

(x-post)

stephen morris, Monday, 24 January 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Technologic uses exactly the same sound as Television only with a better bassline and incessant chipmunk vocals! This is grebt.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

On first listen I think Technologic might eat me.

stephen morris, Monday, 24 January 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep expecting it to go "I wanna sit on your face" any minute now.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was wondering how long before the tide would turn on initial "this is underwhelming" interpretations.

So yes - this is great.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG GUYS STOP GETTING ME EXCITED ABOUT DAFT PUNK IT ALWAYS ENDS IN TEARS (where by "tears" I mean "irritating 'mehs' exaggerated for self-comedic effect")

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

would it be overly precious for me to compare brainwasher to neubauten's 'headcleaner'?

teeny (teeny), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Compared to the 'big' atmosphere of Discovery this is a simpler album in general -- less immediately reminiscent of an anime cartoon soundtrack, let's put it that way! But really it's quite enjoyable and I will have a fine time listening to this sucker again (and again!).

It would not be precious at all, Teeny. It would merely show correct judgment.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I still am completely blah about "Robot Rock", djdee!

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the disappointment hinges on the fact that there is no One More Time/Digital Love classic pop song on here, but fuck, the moment when the bass appears on Emotion doing EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED IT TO DO is marvellous. Steve was OTM about the Feels Like Home Comparison.

It also has exactly the same chords as the middle section of Guilty In Love by Mylo, only with nice filtered pads instead of plinky Super NES noises.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)
