is there a new film one planned? the comedy/action/ horror polls were the best ilx threads of all time imo.

piscesx, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

i'd takeover us80sindie because its a genre i rlly like but i think i'd need a moderator type for the nominations because its also a genre i dont know so well and i'd be open to trolling

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

I revived the horror results thread to ask about that a while back since the animation results apparently aren't going to happen. Crickets.

xpost

WmC, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

xp - I wonder if NickB wanted to drop that because the recent 80s tracks poll made it mostly redundant.

WmC, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

oh fair enough.

I'm up for doing a Brit films poll, but I've the St Etienne poll on my horizon so would be a month or two before I'd run it.

yeah partly. was going to enforce a strict independent labels only rule but include everything from metal and hardcore through to jangly college rock, and also was going for singles instead of tracks so that a handful of bands wouldn't dominate, so it wouldn't have been an exact match, but it does feel like it's too close to go through it all again. but also, i couldn't commit the time. never mind, AGs poll was fun anyway and probably turned out a lot better

Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 18:01 (thirteen years ago)

in fact he gave me the excuse to ditch it!

Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

mm Brit films poll..

piscesx, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 18:08 (thirteen years ago)

A heads-up -- I think some dude alluded to this recently on this thread or another poll thread, but these numbered polls pretty much went on hiatus during December and January last year for best-of-2011 voting and results. Seems reasonable to plan for the same hiatus this year, yeah?

xp -- thanks Nick, reasonable points. I hope everybody who signed up for one of these and who is now thinking "oh shit, what have I gotten myself into" will speak up! The rocket fuel these things run on is enthusiasm, and if the tank's empty, no worries!

WmC, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 18:10 (thirteen years ago)

Agreed with hiatus, and re rocket fuel. Four going on at once is too much right now, and I really don't want the artist ones to suffer because they're excellent fun, dead interesting, hugely educational, blah blah blah

(ps you're doing a great job being THE ENFORCER yourself btw. Just in case you were worried that we *all* think you're being a monster)

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

you're a lovely monster, WmC

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks IK and VG. As I've said before, just keeping the list is the easy part, and the heavy lifting is being done by the poll-runners and voters!

WmC, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

ha, I think I can't thank you enough for keeping reminding me about my poll!

V79, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:00 (thirteen years ago)

Jesus, this waiting for the disco poll is killing me.

Ham Lushbaugh (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:04 (thirteen years ago)

Disco and the Motown/Stax polls are what I'm looking forward to the most.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

Madonna and Springsteen too, but not as much.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

kraftwerk and husker du for me

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

Eric, I'd estimate disco around May/June-ish, barring delays and whether we get through Springsteen before the hiatus.

V79, I'm glad the reminders were welcome -- the last thing I want to be is a nag.

WmC, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:16 (thirteen years ago)

Neptunes, Miles and Motown - no real idea how I'm gonna handle these
Springsteen, Roxy - will be really interesting for me; it's make-or-break time for these two artists
Disco - straight-up salivating

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

british films will be great, but you need to have a way of defining what a british film actually is

foreign language films would be a good one too one day

Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

foreign language = non-english, plz pardon the anglocentricity

Superphysical Resurrection (NickB), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

It may take me until May or June to just pare my list of candidates down to 50.

Ham Lushbaugh (Eric H.), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:41 (thirteen years ago)

I really do think I'm going to post Miles results #21-60 at random before doing the top 20 in order. Although that would probably work better for a John Cage poll.

WmC, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:43 (thirteen years ago)

While we're talking Miles, where should I start my research? From time to time I hear chatter about how good the box sets are, but I've never been able to identify what ones they are. It would mean my Christmas sorted, potentially.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:54 (thirteen years ago)

And while we're talking non-English-speaking, what foreign artists might make for good polls? I'm thinking Jacques Brel has to happen at some point.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 19:55 (thirteen years ago)

I was thinking of volunteering for a Serge Gainsbourg poll but was afraid the turnout would be dismal. Also I cannot speak French. Just wanted an excuse to post pics of Jane Birkin tbh.

Oneohchex Point Charlie (Spectrist), Tuesday, 9 October 2012 20:06 (thirteen years ago)

Gainsbourg would be very cool, lots of different eras and deep cuts. Might put a reggae track at #1.

fish frosch (seandalai), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 01:06 (thirteen years ago)

Can't say I'm interested in Brel, but Gainsbourg would be a fun one.

WmC, Wednesday, 10 October 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

Lol Acid Mothers Temple.

Claudia Schiffer Kills Frog (Leee), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 01:11 (thirteen years ago)

For non-english obvs, the only question is we have enough stuff to choose from.

Claudia Schiffer Kills Frog (Leee), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

probably goes without saying that I would vote in an AMT poll

something about tragedy?...farce?...Richard Marx? (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 05:54 (thirteen years ago)

That's a poll where the top 10 could just be randomly chosen and few would notice.

fish frosch (seandalai), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 11:31 (thirteen years ago)

Actually, an epics (eg 20+ minutes) poll might be interesting, not necessarily AMT, but like all non-classical, non-Cage music?

Claudia Schiffer Kills Frog (Leee), Thursday, 11 October 2012 01:04 (thirteen years ago)

As long as I can vote for USMILEAMBIENT.mp3, I'm down for that.

fish frosch (seandalai), Thursday, 11 October 2012 01:05 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure if I can plan this far ahead, but yeah, put me down for that (though I'm sorely tempted to drop the time minimum to 18 minutes just so a number of my faves can qualify).

Claudia Schiffer Kills Frog (Leee), Saturday, 13 October 2012 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

I am thinking of maybe taking on a B-52's poll; is there enough of a demand for this? Is their catalog large enough?

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 03:37 (thirteen years ago)

they have about as much music as a lot of other artists w/ track polls but i wonder if there's enough people who know more than a couple albums to make it interesting

some dude, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 03:41 (thirteen years ago)

Hrmmm, I wonder. I consider myself a pretty decent fan but I really only know the first two records, Cosmic Thing, and a few tracks on Whammy that stick out in my head. I'd definitely vote and follow the results but I'm not sure it'd be substantively different than just a B-52s discussion thread - I dunno if I'd really come out of it with a bunch of new underrated albums to check out or what-have-you. Could be wrong though!

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 03:42 (thirteen years ago)

i say do it, i want to know more about the B-52's

Go SF Giants (Bee OK), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

I'd participate, but my ballot will have no tracks recorded after Cosmic Thing.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

plus this is ILM, which will make the result that much more interesting.

Go SF Giants (Bee OK), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 03:47 (thirteen years ago)

big deal, they only made 2 albums after that. they do have a few really good songs, though (also "Hallucinating Pluto"!).

some dude, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 03:58 (thirteen years ago)

You could call it "Rock POLLster".

50 Shades of Greil (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

From here on out, I will hear all thread titles with POLL inserted into the lyrics/title/whatever as being in the voice of Fred Schneider.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 05:22 (thirteen years ago)

If I do this I will certainly not be calling it "Rock POLLster"

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 05:24 (thirteen years ago)

"Six or eight thousand years ago, they laid down the POLL"

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 05:29 (thirteen years ago)

"Girl from IPOLLnema Goes To Greenland"

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 05:30 (thirteen years ago)

"Six POLL Six POLL Eight Four Two"

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 05:31 (thirteen years ago)

Poll if you want to..
