yes -- and you're prob right about HHNF. i'm throwing "mr. me too" on my shit

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 October 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

do ppl vote in these polls based on the production alone or on the song as a whole

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Monday, 8 October 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

i think that's harder to seperate for the Neptunes than for most, especially since Pharrell wrote so many choruses. i have a Neptunes instrumentals mixtape that was really kind of disillusioning, how much less alive some of their tracks feel with the vocals stripped out (in a way that i don't get all the time w/ rap instrumentals).

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

doing more of the spotify list and wow 2008 looks downright embarrassing.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:30 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i saw that you added some more stuff! have been procrastinating about adding some stuff myself. definitely want to put the Kenna albums on there. can i get a Kenna voting bloc for this song y'all?

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:32 (thirteen years ago)

i still hate that video but "Freetime" is cool

billstevejim, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

i only have the vaguest memory of an MTV2 promo featuring it as one of their new videos in rotation but i've never actually watched it! but yeah this is kinda dumb

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

there's very little from past, say, 2004 that i can even listen to

eh, imo they never stopped releasing decent stuff, they just stopped releasing great stuff

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Monday, 8 October 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)

I might vote for "Freetime"

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Monday, 8 October 2012 19:38 (thirteen years ago)

kenna isnt on spotify. also i have no idea who kenna is.

2007-2009 all look rubbish. ok im sure the twista or mario songs are fine and i cant remember if Till The Casket Drops is any good or not but... urgh, it gets p nasty.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

it's on the US spotify -- Kenna is a Virginia Beach dude who grew up w/ them and released 2 albums of synth pop bangers primarily produced by Chad

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

ok, i may look them up.

surprised at how much i am enjoying HHNF right now, i always thought it was kinda disappointing when it came out.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 8 October 2012 19:50 (thirteen years ago)

both the praise and the backlash were overstated

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Monday, 8 October 2012 20:07 (thirteen years ago)

http://open.spotify.com/user/sutrarama/playlist/687z3my4nlvZyU0mkZdsYF

Spotify playlist is complete for stuff available in the UK.

a hoy hoy, Monday, 8 October 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

cool, i'll see what i can add from the states

some dude, Monday, 8 October 2012 20:24 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i was always somewhat neptunes skeptical or at least thought they were overrated, greatly preferred timbaland, but i have to admit this stuff still sounds great and not to get all youtube commenter but man do i miss these guys dominating radio.

balls, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

anyhow stoked for this!

balls, Monday, 8 October 2012 21:08 (thirteen years ago)

Oh man, I've barely got started on this - I reached Hollaback Girl and I can't get past it. This is the second time it's blown me away, and I hated it when it came out.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:16 (thirteen years ago)

noooo, i need my fellow hollaback holdouts to stay strong! resistance movement!

some dude, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)

I doubt I'll be voting for it, it's fine but there's so much other better stuff.

Tim F, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah. meh.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Tuesday, 9 October 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

bump - one week left for voting (and I've received only two ballots so far)

V79, Saturday, 13 October 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

Eep. I'll redouble my efforts - I'm inching through the playlist, have identified about ten tracks for my ballot so far.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 13 October 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'd meant to bump the thread and post more this week but didn't get around to it, definitely gonna take my time w/ my ballot though. don't be afraid to push back the deadline to get more ballots, though, that seems to work more often than not.

some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

T.I.'s "I'm Serious" is so fuckin slept on

some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

"Bossman" is incredible too, Neptunes + Beenie Man was a lethal combination

some dude, Saturday, 13 October 2012 17:03 (thirteen years ago)

The Funeral beat still sounds great.

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 05:21 (thirteen years ago)

Never really like much of the NERD stuff, but always vibed to this production.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJmvbz1-Ves
Snappy snares and a little panning is all I need really.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 14 October 2012 05:53 (thirteen years ago)

i think i'm gonna have "beautiful" in my top 5

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 05:57 (thirteen years ago)

i really need to not be going down a neptunes wormhole at 1 am

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 05:58 (thirteen years ago)

neptunes stuff from the last 5-7 years shows you how close to incredibly corny they were with shit like "beautiful" but man when they hit this kinda sound it worked so damn well

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 06:01 (thirteen years ago)

Oh for sure, one thing that has been surprising to me as I've been digging around is how many Neptunes productions actively irritate me.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 14 October 2012 06:07 (thirteen years ago)

"Am I High" is top 5 for me.

billstevejim, Sunday, 14 October 2012 07:05 (thirteen years ago)

looking over the discography in chronological order i kind of re-lived what a heartbreaking fall-off late 2003/2004 was. "Change Clothes" was a real shark jump moment.

some dude, Sunday, 14 October 2012 11:19 (thirteen years ago)

here's some food for thought, the top 25 biggest Neptunes hits on the Hot 100:

1. Nelly - "Hot In Herre"
2. Gwen Stefani - "Hollaback Girl"
3. Snoop Dogg f/ Pharrell - "Drop It Like It's Hot"
4. Ludacris f/ Pharrell - "Money Maker"
5. Kelis - "Milkshake"
6. Usher - "U Don't Have To Call"
7. LL Cool J f/ Marc Dorsey - "Luv U Better"
8. Justin Timberlake - "Rock Your Body"
9. N Sync - "Girlfriend"
10. Pharrell f/ Jay-Z - "Frontin'"
11. Snoop Dogg f/ Pharrell and Charlie Wilson - "Beautiful"
12. Gwen Stefani - "Wind It Up"
13. Jay-Z f/ Pharrell - "Excuse Me Miss"
14. Mase f/ Puff Daddy - "Lookin' At Me"
15. N.O.R.E. f/ Pharrell - "Nothin'"
16. Jay-Z f/ Pharrell - "Change Clothes"
17. Jay-Z - "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)"
18. Justin Timberlake f/ Clipse - "Like I Love You"
19. Busta Rhymes f/ P. Diddy and Pharrell - "Pass The Courvoisier, Part II"
20. Mystikal f/ Pharrell - "Shake Ya Ass"
21. No Doubt - "Hella Good"
22. Mystikal f/ Nivea - "Danger (Been So Long)"
23. Clipse - "When The Last Time"
24. Ludacris - "Southern Hospitality"

Tim F, Sunday, 14 October 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

that's kind of a really bad list

"money maker" is no joke one of my least favorite songs of all time. hate that beat/hook. that whole era of ludacris is just... so depressing.

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 19:46 (thirteen years ago)

I dont think thats a bad list. Got love for plenty of those.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 14 October 2012 20:42 (thirteen years ago)

Everything from 17 is ridiculously great but there's some serious junk blocking the upper reaches of that chart.

Tim F, Sunday, 14 October 2012 20:45 (thirteen years ago)

i didn't realize "when the last time" was that big of a hit -- bigger than "slave 4 u" !!

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 14 October 2012 20:46 (thirteen years ago)

kinda shocked 'signs' isnt in there?

r|t|c, Sunday, 14 October 2012 20:50 (thirteen years ago)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signs_(Snoop_Dogg_song)

always got the deepest love for a thorough and considered wiki

r|t|c, Sunday, 14 October 2012 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

That is so great

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 14 October 2012 21:41 (thirteen years ago)

I don't recall hearing "Signs" on the radio all that often.

How was that list put together? "Frontin'" is their 10th biggest song?! Or did it just chart really well one week?

billstevejim, Monday, 15 October 2012 08:24 (thirteen years ago)

longevity-wise, isn't "Got Your Money" more popular than about half of those songs?

billstevejim, Monday, 15 October 2012 08:33 (thirteen years ago)

that's kind of a really bad list

really? the only songs on it I dislike are "Money Maker"/"Wind It Up"/"Change Clothes"

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Monday, 15 October 2012 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

"Signs" was a total flop in the U.S. for some reason -- maybe urban radio had some anti-Justin sentiment since that was the first thing he dropped since the Janet incident, but pop radio didn't touch it either. i blame "Let's Get Blown" for blowing the "Drop It Like It's Hot" momentum.

some dude, Tuesday, 16 October 2012 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

A couple of album tracks from Kaleidoscope I'll be voting for:
