Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

yeah but would you call him hard rock? was he extreme? badass attitude? make you wanna say fuck you? do you really want born to run in this poll?

But I wouldn't say those things about Marquee Moon or Loaded either, Fragile even.

I'll need time to think about this.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

Johnny Moped Band - Cycledelic

lou reed always makes me wanna say fuck you

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

Lots of middling art-rock nominated so far... I love a lot of it, but this thread definitely needs more balls-out rock. More when I'm not on my phone's browser...

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

I'll nominate some things though, so you know I'm not just trolling:

AC/DC - Jailbreak '74
Boston - s/t
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
Rush - A Farewell to Kings
Siouxsie and the Banshees - The Scream
Styx - Pieces of Eight
Styx - The Grand Illusion

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

I'm with sund4r a bit as well on having confusion over the parameters. I think almost no postpunk belongs here, but I can't really articulate why right now.

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)

Magma - MDK

seconding the VDGG ones. also would like to add H to He there

frogbs, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:29 (thirteen years ago)

I wasn't around for the debates over the parameters (imagine in Robert Ashley's voice) of the last poll, but I just sort of assumed that in saying "music that rocks" you were using in a Chuck Eddy sort of sense, with an emphasis on rhythm/rhythmic drive, which is the only way it really makes much sense to me. All the stuff about extremity seems too broad and diffuse. On the other hand, the last poll ended up being so much fun that maybe the lesson is it doesn't matter what the theoretical underpinnings of the poll are. Maybe if "hard" and "heavy" were in the poll title. I don't know. Of course this time around "music that rocks" isn't even in the thread title.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Solid State Survivor
Throbbing Gristle - 20 Jazz Funk Greats

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

this is OTM

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

Not just any emphasis on rhythm, but an emphasis on rhythm along rock longs, but that could include some disco. Actually toying with suggesting something controversial along those lines.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)

if there's no post-punk can we have fela kuti to compensate?

stirmonster, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

A Chuck Eddy poll of music that rocks would maybe have a fair amount of disco and country (and country disco), but not so much Krautrock or proto-indie. (Not that I idolize Mr. Eddy, I just find his slant on this actually makes a certain amount of sense to me, or more sense than the alternatives.)

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

Anyway. Controversy!

Willie Colon - El Juicio

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)

AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

Re: nominations politics, I've always said when I've run any polls that you can nominate wtf you want, just don't expect anyone else to vote for your craziness.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

the '80s had a LOT more of things like hip hop and 'proper pop' and light rock etc. -- by comparison the '70s poll is veering dangerously close to 'any white person who didn't sing too many ballads'

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)

a lot more things to frame the poll in opposition to, i mean

lou reed always makes me wanna say fuck you

Because of his lyrics, delivery, and persona? If so, you're basically appreciating him as a singer-songwriter, not that differently from how people appreciate Bob Dylan and Warren Zevon. (And how different are "Sweet Jane" and "Rock and Roll" from those guys, really?)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)

what about Grateful Dead's Europe 72?

remtrollison (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

There's so much late 70s stuff that is just lumped into the 80s in my mind that I forget it's from the 70s.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

The Groundhogs - Split

The Fall - Live at the Witch Trials
The Fall - 77–Early Years–79

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 16:18 (thirteen years ago)

Metal Urbain - Les hommes morts sont dangereux

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Friday, 5 October 2012 16:24 (thirteen years ago)

I agree with the general feeling that the boundaries feel significantly harder to pin down for the 70s (and no Stones would be madness imo), but that said -
Funkadelic - Free Your Mind...And Your Ass Will Follow
The Damned - Damned Damned Damned

Sock Puppets II (Mr Andy M), Friday, 5 October 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)

Sock Puppets II (Mr Andy M), Friday, 5 October 2012 17:01 (thirteen years ago)

Even though it's one of my favorite things ever made, if Music for 18 Musicians is included in this poll then I quit life

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

That's disrespectful to Reich and to rock; ditto Fela's inclusion

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

I promise to stop being a grumpy old man and to actually vote in this one, but I do fear this poll's slow descent into cleverness...

Clarke B., Friday, 5 October 2012 17:06 (thirteen years ago)

there's lots of stoopidity included too. i will think of some more dumb favourites.

stirmonster, Friday, 5 October 2012 17:12 (thirteen years ago)

Umm Guilty. But I think you are taking it too seriously Clarke, and if it is an offensive faux pas it is more out of dumbness than trying to be clever!

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 October 2012 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

i like these attempts to broaden the poll's boundaries to the point of meaningless. maybe the whole thing will be called off, or turned into another 'alternate' poll where nothing that made the first 2 polls is eligible.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 17:14 (thirteen years ago)

meaninglessness
