Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:11 (thirteen years ago)

I do wish you'd go back and make sure that your previous poll's messes are cleaned up before starting new ones though.

xps to AG: Try using the search function to search for any band name or album title in the wake of these types of polls. I have to scroll through pages and pages of each time you decide to update the nominations list. It would be good housekeeping for pollstarters to go back and delete everything except maybe only the last noms list. It's really annoying when searching for posts of substance about musical acts.

how's life, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:20 (thirteen years ago)

I've brought this up on mod request board once and I think one of the mods even went back and deleted a bunch of the horrible noms list from a thread or two (God bless you, sir or ma'am), but I don't know if the people running these polls realize it.

how's life, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:22 (thirteen years ago)

well im not a mod so cant do that

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

ok it happened someone nominated rolling stones.
i assume most say no rolling stones in the poll?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:25 (thirteen years ago)

maybe we go for the one album only compromise?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

Also anyone volunteering to help with a tracks poll or does noone want a tracks poll?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:32 (thirteen years ago)

the endless reposts of nominee lists are ridiculous. AG posted the results of the OTHER 80s poll three times during the rollout for his own poll.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:33 (thirteen years ago)

well im not a mod so cant do that

Yeah, but you could take some responsibility for your shit and submit a humble mod request for someone to go back and delete posts that may repeat themselves too many times.

how's life, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

seems daft to exclude exile on main st tbh

space dokken (Edward III), Friday, 5 October 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

yeah if that's not a rock album I don;t know what is.

Do the noms lists really mess up searching? I always search on thread titles or use Google...

iglu ferrignu, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

i know what how's life is saying. if you sort search results by relevance, then the all the gigantic lists tend to end up right at the end iirc

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Friday, 5 October 2012 13:41 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, but you could take some responsibility for your shit and submit a humble mod request for someone to go back and delete posts that may repeat themselves too many times.

― how's life,

A mod already told me last year not top other them with poll stuff.
ps. your tone sucks.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

This is more an issue with every poll thread ever than just some crazy thing that AG does. But anyway, if we maintain a Google Spreadsheet there shouldn't be any need to post nomination lists in the thread.

fish frosch (seandalai), Friday, 5 October 2012 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

yes - fragile
yes - close to the edge
yes - relayer

iglu ferrignu, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

AG, you can edit it; everyone can view

fish frosch (seandalai), Friday, 5 October 2012 13:51 (thirteen years ago)

saying yes to Rolling Stones in the poll

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

thanks!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

I have included exile and animals for now.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

oh c'mon Exile is much closer to the rest of the band's output for the decade that Animals is to PF's -- you get that in you need Sticky Fingers and everything else

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:56 (thirteen years ago)

so basically are we just using chuck eddy's definition of metal here?

da croupier, Friday, 5 October 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

if the issue is the Stones/ Floyd will dominate, I think the presence of Bowie/ Roxy/ Sabbath/ Zeppelin etc. etc. will ensure that no band could possibly dominate. let 'em in I say!

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 5 October 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

And if "Loaded" is allowed the threshold of rockingness must be pretty low.

fish frosch (seandalai), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

Van der Graaf Generator – Pawn Hearts
Van der Graaf Generator – Godbluff
Van der Graaf Generator – Still Life
Peter Hammill – Over

my father will guide me up the stairs to bed (anagram), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:02 (thirteen years ago)

from the intro to stairway to hell:

"Basically, I include all (decent) loud-guitar squashing-ears-like-bugs brain-damamge that could conceivably (theoretically) appeal to a heavy metal audience, not just observers-of-arbitrary-dress-code already accepted by said crowd. Everybody else's definition changes annually, I decided, so the only sensible way to handle the predicament was to make eligible for Stairway To Hell all extant wax that would've been considered metal at any time in HM's elongated life span, whether said wax was considered metal at the time of releae or not. The only exception was the Rolling stones, who cannot be heavy metal because, well, they're the Rolling Stones. And so are the Clash."

da croupier, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:03 (thirteen years ago)

Is stuff like Steely Dan + Randy Newman allowed in this poll?

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:04 (thirteen years ago)

Cheap Trick - Heaven Tonight
The Clash - Give 'Em Enough Rope
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Cosmo's Factory
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Led Zeppelin - Presence
Little Feat - Feats Don't Fail Me Now
Patti Smith - Horses
Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive!
Queen - Queen
Thin Lizzy - Vagabonds Of The Western World
War - All Day Music

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta admit that so far this poll makes less intuitive sense to me than the 80s poll. I love Television but they were mostly basically jangle-rock with jams, not very heavy or noisy. In fact, I've always seen them as a precursor to REM and jangly indie. Have trouble seeing the rationale for including them but not Talking Heads or Blondie. Springsteen and the Stones probably rocked harder (although I like Television more than 70s Heads, Blondie, or Springsteen.) I'd say similar things about Loaded (except that I've never liked it much): it's a pretty mellow folk-rock-ish record imo. Why is there even a question about the Stones?

Yes is another one of my all-time favourite bands but much of what they did is pretty light/soft. Why is Pink Floyd borderline if Yes and ELP are in? Does Genesis count? Or would Nursery Cryme count but not The Lamb? Van der Graaf Generator? I get that King Crimson, Rush, and Queen should fit. Tull and Heep too.

these arent artist polls k3vin

I thought genre polls were covered in that thread too?

many xposts

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:06 (thirteen years ago)

xp
no.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

(croup: I thought of the 80s poll in terms of Eddy's definition of metal/Carducci's definition of rock.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

Miles Davis - A Tribute To Jack Johnson
Miles Davis - Agharta
Miles Davis - Pangaea
Miles Davis - Dark Magus

5-Hour Enmity (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 5 October 2012 14:07 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i'm trying to come up with nominees and it's hard to see a logical through-line here between what is and isn't allowed, beyond just sort of desiring an alternative canon

da croupier, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)

Miles Davis - Big Fun And nobody tell me it isn't a proper album cos as far as I am concerned it is !

Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:11 (thirteen years ago)

maybe it should just be an anti-Rolling Stones canon where everybody remotely rock except the Rolling Stones are allowed in

da croupier, Friday, 5 October 2012 14:11 (thirteen years ago)
