the passage in question doesn't even make sense to me -- rap coverage on the internet "has increasingly focused attention on the grittiest corners"? no fucking way

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 02:44 (thirteen years ago)

tbf, it probably has where jon reads

EVERYONE COOKING SCMABLED EGGS,CHEESE WITH TOASTER!! (forksclovetofu), Friday, 5 October 2012 02:47 (thirteen years ago)

asap rocky and azealia banks

the grittiest corners

fadanuf4erybody, Friday, 5 October 2012 04:15 (thirteen years ago)

i guess i dont really get at what point i crossed a line where I'm a part of the story

i told the story, i didn't create it

it's a pretty passing mention of so many shrimp, though LOL at the idea that blogging about youtube videos is akin to alan lomax field recordings...i mean, you seem to question the ways that various rap acts or songs are covered in the media, it didn't seem unfair to me.

the only bullshit would be that lomax kind of comes with an insinuation of exploitation, though i just finished a really good history of the blues book that calls into question who was playing who

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 5 October 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

yeah 'lomax' being used or interpreted as a simple shorthand for exploitation is pretty problematic. i'm not so sure caramanica even meant it that way at all.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)

this is the book i just finished:
http://www.amazon.com/The-History-Blues-Francis-Davis/dp/0786860529

it's pretty interesting...he's harder on john hammond sr. than lomax....though it's interesting, his case is that the old blues guys were way more entertainers that played everything from delta blues to tin pan alley songs or whatever people liked, but they sensed what lomax wanted to hear and sort of tailored their stuff to fit his idea of "pure primitive" blues

like, for instance, who's this tortured, bedeviled soul named robert johnson doing this peppy little ragtime number?

dude, he mentions you in passing as someone who is covering the scene, relax with the "I told the story, i didn't create it" stuff

nah i appreciated being mentioned i just get cautious abt being seen as a 'booster' i guess; i am in the sense that i'd like to see it succeed, but i feel like ive been careful not to misdescribe it or w/e

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Friday, 5 October 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

well if you're saying you're a booster of the art that comes out of a scene, not of the violence or the uglier shit that comes out of the scene, I'm more sympathetic to that line of thinking and can see where you wouldn't want to get painted as A DARK CHRONICLE OF GHETTO LIFE or whatever but I didn't really see that implied... i guess you could read it that way?

I dropped this in the "forks videos" thread but in light of Matt dropping his back in the day faves here's one that i just rediscovered

LL COOL J has released his new song “Ratchet” from his highly anticipated upcoming new album, AUTHENTIC HIP-HOP, coming soon.

The rain in Spin circles mainly on the mansplain (D-40), Wednesday, 10 October 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

LL should've dropped a joint right after he beat the shit out of that guy who tried to rob his house, i would've been all YEAHHHH no matter what it was at that point

My favorite semi-back packy tape lately is the Bentley one. He's treating these old(ish) beats as a challenge, not as a crutch. So refreshing.

Q: should there be a separate drill thread? For me, this is has such a dominant sound of 2012.

MikoMcha, Friday, 12 October 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

Only just catchin up with the Lil Reese tape after the Us remix, but that said, Beef is a huge track.
