Hellhouse, Thursday, 4 October 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

does the success of this poll just not prove how much ilm is an old fuckers hangout, and therefore no longer relevant in this new on-demand world we all now live in ?

[me included, before anyone gets all uppity .. ]

mark e, Friday, 5 October 2012 00:03 (thirteen years ago)

This was my first ILM poll. It was fun! If i learned anything it's that I should have done a 'weighted' ballot to give my favorites extra points, and that you guys really love Albini and Sonic Youth.

Raoul Duke (ku4u1u), Friday, 5 October 2012 02:31 (thirteen years ago)

would love to see something similar to this for the 70s, maybe ease anti-rolling stone canonicity a little but tighten RAWK parameters. i think if results were around top 400 the multitude of zeppelin and sabbath wouldn't be quite as anticlimactic.

balls, Friday, 5 October 2012 02:51 (thirteen years ago)

yeah there's a lot to be said for a weighted ballot, as I learned from the tracks poll

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 5 October 2012 02:53 (thirteen years ago)

really? how many points do you waste doing an unweighted ballot?

Also would there be enough people contributing? The success of this poll was determined by those posting on the threads and would the same people have an interest in a 70s rock poll? That would be key for me.
The 80s poll had a lot of people taking part who grew up with the music that decade and I'm not sure the 70s would be the same with the exception of a few people into punk n prog (and Rush would dominate like sonic Youth did the 80s poll).
Otoh it would be nice to have bands like Funkadelic and Mandrill getting the props they deserve.
But would there be enough posters/voters?

A 90s poll would be harder to do because so many on ilm lived through it. How would we decide what was and wasn't allowed. Would also need more than a top 400!

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 5 October 2012 09:57 (thirteen years ago)

Obviously lots of listening to do but some things I've already checked out and enjoyed:

Swell Maps - Jane From Occupied Europe
Meat Puppets - Huevos
Bitch Magnet - Umber
Band of Susans - Love Agenda
Giant Sand - Valley of Rain
Didjits - Hey Judester
Butthole Surfers - Rembrandt Pussyhorse

Loved the Buttholes one especially, their most psychedelic record maybe?

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 5 October 2012 10:08 (thirteen years ago)

I'd be up for a 70s poll, but I think it ought to be shorter; I've not been able to keep up with this one because it's just been so gargantuan.

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 5 October 2012 10:24 (thirteen years ago)

I asked some ilxors on twitter and they all replied 70s first then a 90s poll. So anyone else interested? Everything would depend on seandalai helping and if you want a tracks poll I need a volunteer for co-runner.
Would be 2 weeks for nominations and 2 weeks for voting. Then I guess 2 weeks to roll out.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 10:25 (thirteen years ago)

Nick the point of a long poll is so that lesser known cult faves get introduced to wider ilx and everyones vote countts so they do not need to just do tactical voting to get led zep or rush or sabbath a place higher up.
Of course i cant see there being enough albums to do a 400 with.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 10:26 (thirteen years ago)

A '70s rock poll would be great, definitely up for that.

Oh I totally get that, it's just, for me, too much information to parse!

I think blount gets it right with this

i think if results were around top 400 the multitude of zeppelin and sabbath wouldn't be quite as anticlimactic.

Simply tabulating requires minimal effort now for me (for the EOY poll most of my time goes into the stats), so I can probably help out.

really? how many points do you waste doing an unweighted ballot?

This time round you got 10 extra points to give out with a weighted/split ballot compared to an unweighted ballot. But really the main benefit of having a weighted portion is that you get to give more points to the albums you care about more (or think need more help) - even if an unweighted ballot seems easier, it's probably not the case that you care about every album equally.

would be interested to see where, exactly, the aesthetic boundaries get drawn in the '70s poll.

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:10 (thirteen years ago)

i don't think i bought a single "rock" record between 1990 and 1997 as i was so immersed in electronic music so i'd find that of interest to see what gems i missed out on, but a 70s poll would be more fun.

stirmonster, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:23 (thirteen years ago)

Well it appears there's support for a 70s poll and seandalai says its no problem then shall we do a nominations thread then see what aesthetic boundaries we can agree on? I think we will be less strict but again less sure about springsteen. Still , that's what the thread is for. Because you want to vote for it isn't enough reason to have an album nominated so in borderline cases i think a good case has to be provided.

Anyway dont reply to that here - leave it for

I'VE GOT THE POWER! This is the 1990s ELECTRONIC TRACKS AND ALBUMS voting thread! - Deadline on Monday, October 8th, at 12PM (GMT)

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:39 (thirteen years ago)

haha dude you HAVE to come up with a different name than 'Anti-Rolling Stone Canon' for this stuff, it'll make even less sense with the 70s poll

some dude, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:45 (thirteen years ago)

well lets wait and see what is nominated. but for archival purposes its easier to keep these titles.
I guess a 70s poll will be a more alternative rolling stone canon rather than anti rolling stone canon.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 5 October 2012 11:51 (thirteen years ago)

I dunno I think you could still keep the spirit of the poll going in the 70s - no dylan, no byrds - and rolling stone wasn't exactly singing the high praise of sabbath and the stooges in the 70s

well get in there and nominate
