So I'm tired and just throwing out random thoughts now but - if you think of Black Flag, Minutemen, Meat Puppets & Husker Du as the 4 bands that really put SST on the map, HD would the be the band that I'd associate most closely and directly with 'rock' as such. (Not to say that by itself makes them the best, Minutemen probably my fave if I had to choose).

SST's entire aesthetic project revolved around pushing & re-inventing rock.

but Husker Du were prob. the most pop-oriented (and maybe trad.-rock in that sense), so I get yr. point.

I don't think I've ever heard NDR all the way through, although I love Zen Arcade and "Eight Miles High" and a lot of Warehouse (esp the Mould songs).

Yeah trad-rock sounds right, also the sensibility of 'hard rock' that you've been talking about a lot, it's to do with that thick guitar sound they had.
