Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

I like Bad Moon Rising plenty but imo with the exception of Dead Valley 69 it's not a rock record.

listening to BMR right now and this seems crazy to me

Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

come on guys have a go at predicting the top 10. Lets see who comes closest! Whoever wins gets to choose what album jjj buys from the poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, cool, thanks! I don't listen to BMR enough. I think you're probably right that Sister is where the switch really happens. I always saw the transition between Evol and Sister as the real shift. I'm surprised when people say DN marks the real shift from Sister: they both sound like indie rock albums to me.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

I'd say Evol instead of whatever Rock for Light is. Otherwise, that looks right.

will dan and jjj be bold enough to make one?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)

not sure about Rock for Light, would probably swap that out for another SY album, but Gavin's list looks good. Am sticking my neck out and saying Slayer for #1.

I'll be surprised if ILM votes Reign in Blood over Daydream Nation or even Surfer Rosa, although I'd be pleased in the second case. It was my #9.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

Holy fuck, this clip is amazing, Edward!

― EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, October 4, 2012 3:01 PM (9 minutes ago)

yeah that gila monster jamboree footage was a much viewed VHS at my house in '87, great vers of "the burning spear"

you'll never guess who opened for them at that show

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:17 (thirteen years ago)

In '85? I dunno. Swans?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:19 (thirteen years ago)

Well, it depends on what you consider to be the "essential, signature elements". Some of the things I would consider essential, signature elements of CIS (especially the prepared guitar sound, also the gothic/horror lyrics) are absent on later albums. By the late 90s/early 00s, Television-style dual or triple-guitar interplay is something I'd consider an essential, signature element of the band's style, which is not something you find on CIS.

oh, absolutely, I understand that the notion that SY even has signature elements is contentious. off the top of my head, I would say prominent, dual-guitar interplay that often spins off into dissonance (that bypasses yr. prepared/unprepared distinction), the strong and often foregrounded bass/drum foundation, a penchant f/dark, psych-oriented beauty (bypassing the goth/not-goth distinction), their bent f/suggestive but surreal and drug-hazed lyrics, and generally speaking, as I mention above, their essential orientation as a no-wave/art-rock band grounded in a hard-rock sensibility. the band that we all know as SY essentially gelled w/that record. we can disagree about the degree that these elements are present in subsequent works, the aesthetic worth of their later recs, etc., but I feel that I’m solid ground in saying that the primary aesthetic that launched them and ultimately sustained them (even if it’s occasionally opaque in some of the later, far more conventional works), was established on that rec. don’t forget, I’m ultimately talking about permutations, amalgams that will not wholly resemble CIS, but are grounded in the sensibility that was established at that time. the standard indie-rock narrative is that SY more-or-less puttered about in an aesthetic cesspool until they burst out w/the huge conceptual leap of DDM. I see the opposite: a powerful, stunningly original band that really came into their own by '83, but who, by the time DDN came out, were kind of just doing dull variations on a well-worn theme. but, again, getting anyone to agree on anything when it comes to SY is nearly impossible, so, you know, YMWV.

OK I'm enjoying those SY Mojave Desert clips a lot.

What Makes A Man Shart Fire? (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

TOO LOW! my #2 (and, for a while, my #1 just b/c this was such a rock-oriented poll; that didn't last long, though).

Hellhouse, Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:26 (thirteen years ago)

my #4

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:27 (thirteen years ago)

There always has to be one favourite for the top spot that misses the top 10, neil.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

a long time ago I did blurbs for my top 10 recs, my take on reign in blood:

All the horrors of the 20th century, plus those of the world's permanently stunted adolescents, are wrapped in a compact 30 minute orgasm of blind rage.

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:31 (thirteen years ago)

ha! OTM.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:33 (thirteen years ago)

perfect summary!

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:34 (thirteen years ago)

IMO the most perfect album-as-a-unified-whole ever made. didn't even bother voting f/any of the individual tracks.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:36 (thirteen years ago)

Anyone care to predict the top 10 now?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 19:37 (thirteen years ago)
