I still chuckle about watching Gira getting knocked back from entry to one of the Sufjan Steven's auditorium shows at Primavera in 2011. He kinda pleaded with the Spanish girl on the door about how he was someone important and all that and she was having none of it.

Internet Alan, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

I mean they went straight from this

to this

yeah, it's just sick what they accomplished w/those two recs.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

here's the original (superior) version of "our love lies"

Is anyone going to make predictions? instead of waiting until the #3 is posted and saying "oh i knew that would win"

Who is going to be brave? Who will do a jjj and do a ludicrous bet?

yes, but the skin albums came out in the interim which offered a bit of a clue as to other possible directions. "in my garden" could easily have been on "blood, women, roses.

stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

I really dug songs about fucking when it came out but don't think much of it now, enjoyable but not as good as atomizer so don't get your hopes up headcheese

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

i predict the top 5 will be mainly big black and sonic youth.

stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

Songs About Fucking always seemed to have a hollowness to it. only voted f/Atomizer.

Hellhouse, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

wow Double Nickels, Ride the Lightning, Flip your Wig all v low IMO.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:32 (thirteen years ago)

true, but I'd only heard the "1000 years" 12" at that point, and thought it was just jarboe's side project. had no idea that skin's style was going to get completely folded into swans.

xps

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:35 (thirteen years ago)

I expect high placement for Zen Arcade, Atomizer and a slew of Sonic Youth albums

Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Songs About Fucking was always the NME's pick

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

ok who knew there was a video for "1000 years"?

http://youtu.be/QFXo7W_k4Qs

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

I expect that I maybe won't be as excited about the rest of the results now maybe?

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

i was obsessed with the first skin album, the second one not so much, so i guess that lessened the shock. rico conning's production is also a big part of the story i feel.

xp

stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:37 (thirteen years ago)

i seem to recall that channel 4 made the skin video to be shown on "the tube".

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

ha, nice pic. my second favorite SY rec, showing in its expected order (Zzzzzz).

Hellhouse, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

A++ pic

fun loving and xtremely tolrant (Billy Dods), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

New Day Rising should make it I think

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:44 (thirteen years ago)

Yay for Meat Puppets II showing up. Lost is such a beautiful song.
Think I prefer Atomizer to SAF but it's close.

What Makes A Man Shart Fire? (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

Going back:

by the time they recorded Confusion is Sex, however, the band had found their calling as a hard rock band. There’s nothing tentative about Inhuman, Brother James, The World Looks Red, She’s in a Bad Mood, Shaking Hell, or Kill Yr. Idols (I’m obv including the Kill Yr. Idols material from the same period). all of the essential, signature Sonic Youth elements are fully present in their purest incarnation, and in this sense I would compare Confusion is Sex to Damaged. Yes, they would of course with every subsequent record add various ornamental elements, but the foundation of a no-wave/art-rock sensibility channeled through a hard rock framework remained unchanged.

Well, it depends on what you consider to be the "essential, signature elements". Some of the things I would consider essential, signature elements of CIS (especially the prepared guitar sound, also the gothic/horror lyrics) are absent on later albums. By the late 90s/early 00s, Television-style dual or triple-guitar interplay is something I'd consider an essential, signature element of the band's style, which is not something you find on CIS.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

guessing that jjj's pic was taken while in parking lot, as the alternate possibility is HOLY SHIT WATCH THE ROAD

da croupier, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

i'm looking forward to test dept and crash course in science placing in the top ten.

stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

I like Bad Moon Rising plenty but imo with the exception of Dead Valley 69 it's not a rock record.

What Makes A Man Shart Fire? (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

(especially the prepared guitar sound, also the gothic/horror lyrics

The latter faded out more slowly than the former, which afaict they abandoned altogether after CIS.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

really? I'm pretty sure they were still doing prepared guitar up through sister

space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:49 (thirteen years ago)

I like Bad Moon Rising plenty but imo with the exception of Dead Valley 69 it's not a rock record.

I voted for it on the grounds that it was no less rock than Drawings of Patient OT, which I also voted for. I do think there's something to this pov though.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

really? I'm pretty sure they were still doing prepared guitar up through sister

Examples? I don't hear it on Sister. I could believe that some of the sounds on Evol might be prepared guitar.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

Did I tell you that the album that won the poll led from the front all the way and won easily?

Well sorry stirmonster but it wasn't this album

1. Daydream Nation
2. Reek of Putrefaction
3. Power Windows

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:53 (thirteen years ago)

it's way more rock than a multitude of things (i voted for) in this poll. xp

listening to BMR right now and this seems crazy to me

Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

come on guys have a go at predicting the top 10. Lets see who comes closest! Whoever wins gets to choose what album jjj buys from the poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:56 (thirteen years ago)

Oh, cool, thanks! I don't listen to BMR enough. I think you're probably right that Sister is where the switch really happens. I always saw the transition between Evol and Sister as the real shift. I'm surprised when people say DN marks the real shift from Sister: they both sound like indie rock albums to me.

xpost to Edward III

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

i gotta go. tweet me the top ten AG. :)

stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

ok stirmonster i'll tweet the top 10 to you as it happens
