I love Doolittle, it was the first Pixies album I heard
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)
I totally bought Doolittle because of a girl
thank you, German camp crush
― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:16 (thirteen years ago)
Doolittle isn't my fave but it's dear to me because it was also the first I heard.
― (✿◠‿◠) (ENBB), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:17 (thirteen years ago)
first thing I ever heard by the Pixies was "I've Been Tired"
later on, I realized I'd also heard "Gigantic" and "Where Is My Mind?" but they hadn't immediately registered
― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)
I sometimes think my favourite Pixies album is Trompe Le Monde.
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)
all the coolest crushworthy guys at college liked the Pixies. it was like a rule
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)
when I unwrapped Doolittle and played it for the first time (btw this was in the same batch of CDs that included the Feelies album I ended up hating), this was me during "Debaser":

next one up is a surprisingly low position.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)
wait a min dan you dropped a tab then listened to Doolittle?
Then this was me during "Tame":

― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)
by the time "I Bleed" started up I was convinced I was listening to genius
Debaser still gives me a tiny wave of excitement, like I'm always *kinda* hearing it for the first time

that's not that much of a surprise, it's not Loveless
― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)
doolittle soured me on the pixies 4 life
down with doolittle!
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:26 (thirteen years ago)
Never thought this was a great album.
xpost to Isn't Anything
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:27 (thirteen years ago)
Loveless towers over any other MBV imo. Production was likely everything with that band.

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)
surprised junkyard made it so high.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)
I avoided The Birthday Party for a really long time because I didn't like Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds; actually hearing them via Hits was very eye-opening
as a result I think "The Friend Catcher" is my favorite song of theirs but this album has some stompers on it
― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)
such an awesome cover
― fit and working again, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)
okay that's weird
Prayers on Fire is the better album imo
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)
but fucking wooooooooo at The Birthday Party cracking the top 50
either way I'm a happy girl
(I can't remember which Bad Seeds song it was I heard that turned me off to them but it wasn't "The Weeping Song", which made me reconsider my antipathy)
― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
oh DJP
*shakes head sadly*
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:39 (thirteen years ago)
junkyard feels like their most cohesive. first time I heard "she's hit" I was in love - wtf is this? music totally outside of genre, a high wire act of style and grit.
― space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
wow noon comes early in englandland.
btw the mudhoney album title is actually a ref to TWO guitar pedals, the other being the univox superfuzz. which i have been lucky enough to play and own for a short while, and i am pretty sure its all over that record.
― costly pussy riot (jjjusten), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)
DJP have you heard from her to eternity? stylistically it's not that far from the birthday party stuff.
― space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)
That first side of Junkyard is just perfectly sequenced too, it's great
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

junkyard has the better cover.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)
i hated the bad seeds/nick cave for years (completely independently from DJP), got turned around by red right hand and his ULTRA CREEPY work w/current 93 on all the pretty little horses. still havent listened to the birthday club ever though.
also all this talk about the feelies letdown is reminding me of guadacanal diary - flip flop, which might have been in that same box and was also ass.
― costly pussy riot (jjjusten), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
ah it was "The Train Song" on the Mute International compilation that I heard and made me go "okay avoid Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds"
xp: hahahaha Flip Flop! What a terrible terrible album (it was another Columbia House purchase, yes)
― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)
EIII otm, From Her To Eternity, and even Firstborn is Dead to some extent are very much transitional Birthday Party albums. Kicking Against the Pricks delineates between the Bad Seeds and the Birthday party, and then Your Funeral is more like the official Bad Seeds being the Bad Seeds.
at least in my mind. Those first two bad seeds albums are still very snarly and jangly and kinda noisy, even though they're more reigned in
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)
check out their last two eps which imo is the birthday party's best work. xp
― stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)
all this BP talk Imma have to have a listening (birthday) party this morning
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)
John, check out "The Friend Catcher" by The Birthday Party; I am certain you will adore it
― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

― Technology of the Big Muff (DJP), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
Bad Seeds + Birthday Party + Nick Cave, definitely one of my most long-running rabid obsessions
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
Ha! This is so true.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
Friend Catcher is awesome
Stirmonster you didn't even comment on the buttholes album!
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
yeah the mutiny/bad seed EPs are good places to start: http://open.spotify.com/album/7LT9c5MHBgDWB595HgQkvr
hits is pretty good as a career overview but it's in chronological order so you don't get to hear their signature sound until you're a couple tracks in: http://open.spotify.com/album/14q81HMQE5drKlOCmrgURf
wtf why does spotify's version of junkyard start w/ "blast off"
― space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)
it's a good song but that is unholy ruination of perfect sequencing
― space dokken (Edward III), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:52 (thirteen years ago)
I know Hairway isn't quite up there with earlier Buttholes but I always loved X-ray Of A Girl Passing Gas more than anything else of theirs.
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)
spotify's junkyard is the reissue - blastoff was the bonus track
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)
def ruins the flow, I agree
i like hairway to steven ok but i didn't vote for it and i never listened to anything they did after it with very much interest.
― stirmonster, Thursday, 4 October 2012 15:53 (thirteen years ago)
put the bloody bonus tracks at the end ffs
