Candlemass is an influential Swedish doom metal band established in Stockholm 1984 by bassist, songwriter and bandleader Leif Edling. After releasing five full-length albums and touring extensively throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Candlemass disbanded in 1994, but decided to reform three years later. After breaking up again in 2002, Candlemass reformed in 2004 and have continued to record and perform since then.

i'm here, cracking open the champagne.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 23:04 (thirteen years ago)
hahaare you surprised at that album placing so high?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)
haha that candlemass album is notable as being both the album i bought and thought "uggh i guess candlemass isnt for me" and then years later got browbeaten into listening to again (ha by AG iirc) and thought "holy shit what was wrong with my ears when i listened to this, this is badass". both reactions purely due to the vocals. which are pretty hardcore love/hate tbh.

After some of the discussion on the other thread, I've entertained thoughts about whether Confusion Is Sex might actually be the best Sonic Youth album.
I think it is their best record, and its showing was expected but nevertheless disappointing. IMO the core of the band’s aesthetic thrust was essentially formed around this record, and I would say that every document recorded thereafter is more-or-less an amalgam of Confusion is Sex and whatever genre SY happen to be exploring/appropriating at any given moment, a model I’m guessing they borrowed from Black Flag. I think this approach worked aesthetically through Sister, and financially f/much, much longer, but while the process has afforded them great longevity, it’s also delivered increasingly diminishing returns (especially over the course of decades). everyone, of course, is going to delineate the band’s prime aesthetic years (and traits) in very different ways, and your mileage absolutely will vary.

i was lucky enough to see nin on that first real tour, and holy shit man, fucking absolute madness on stage. great show, they really suffered when the technical side exceeded 5000 strobe lights, a 500 foot mic cord to get tied up in progressively over the set, and a bunch of bored chicago junkies on the side of the stage pelting the band with cornstarch
― costly pussy riot (jjjusten), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 23:20 (thirteen years ago)
am i an industrial fan? i guess i could be and while i don't actively hate pretty hate machine i'd happily snap a copy in two if i saw one.

I saw NIN about 4 times in the past 10 years before they broke up and every show felt liek the best show I'd been to
best was a warmup show they did in Davis just outside Sacto at Freeborn Hall. That place is like a high school gym, terrible acoustics, just a cave of a venue to see any band in. But they took the time to really tweak the hell out of the sound and get the most out of that place and it was like a whole new venue when they played. It's kind of a nice perk when Trent's a huge audio nerd...great sound at shows, cool as hell live releases, great remaster. I hope he gets bored and brings them back one day.

and at #41 a band we've not seen mentioned yet

I like some of the accidental touches to Pussyhorse, all the backwards c+w violins. When I was 16 it seemed like it came from another planet.

I'd say that Ethel Merman impersonator = Jello Biafra but that's not giving Merman enough credit.

no jello is an ethel merman impersonator impersonating a sammy davis jr impersonator with a mouth full of tapioca pudding

I've got to say that I'm a little shocked that Number of the Beast, Master of Puppets, Pretty Hate Machine, and Fresh Fruit all placed so low. I figured all of those would have been in top 20.
