i read something recently that contained a sentence something like "dare we say they sound like early Hawkwind mixed with Can?!" and seriously, considering the band they were talking about, my answer is no, you do not.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:53 (thirteen years ago)

So I should spend my hard earned music journalist dollars on this?

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:08 (thirteen years ago)

totally! it's like hawkwind meets can meets the beatles!

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

[snark aside: yeah, it's great!]

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:10 (thirteen years ago)

Early Hawkwind or late Hawkwind?

Hamster of Legend (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:12 (thirteen years ago)

i don't hear a ton of psych in this, although i guess any psych would be by way of paisley underground dreampop.

... as i've said elsewhere, it's suicide + the more minimalist aspects of spacemen 3 + galaxie 500/luna.

sriracha bishop (get bent), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

see i'm probably part of the problem -- suicide, spacemen 3 and g-500 are all psychedelic bands to me.

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)

BUT WHAT IS PSYCH

sriracha bishop (get bent), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:15 (thirteen years ago)

i really don't know. maybe i should impose a self-ban on using the term.

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)

it's got too many drum machine bass drums + snares to be psych. drum machine hi-hats/shakers are acceptable.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)

suicide, spacemen 3 and g-500 are all psychedelic bands

real talk

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

any drum machine built after 1978 = not psych

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)

This album is rad as fuck and I am SO EXCITED TO GO SEE THEM ON SATURDAY

bell biv devo (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

lol we need crut's 77 laws of psych

tylerw, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 20:26 (thirteen years ago)

this was a good show, v entertaining, def some psychrock elements and many other elements
nice light projection show (def psychedelic)
young people danced in front of the stage
i swayed a bit
DRUM MACHINES
i only laughed twice at the beatz, i mean, in an entertained, nice way. sometimes things are funny when you listen to yr fair share of electronic music.
v happy i went :)

Would I like Moon Duo?

comedy is unnatural and abhorrent (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:23 (thirteen years ago)

MAybe? Check out the video upthread. It's a pretty fair representative.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 4 October 2012 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

I heard Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down A Dream" yesterday and it made me think of Moon Duo

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Monday, 8 October 2012 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

on first impression the new one feels a little tame compared to Mazes.

dmr, Monday, 8 October 2012 18:28 (thirteen years ago)

i love tom petty

yeah, i enjoyed this. mix very much in character.

tylerw, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

Wait, is this not working anymore? It was yesterday.

Is it working for others? My computer does kinda suck.

alpine static, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

Seems fine for me.
Who stole my copy of CQ?!?!? Still pissed about that one.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

OK, thanks. Will try again.

alpine static, Wednesday, 31 October 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

Who stole my copy of CQ?!?!? Still pissed about that one.

Now is probably the best time in recent memory to have it stolen, it's been reissued on both vinyl and CD recently.

Cool mix. Personally I find it hard to use an Aphrodite's Child song that isn't "Magic Mirror" in a mix, though.

spittin all over my sweater of fine material (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 1 November 2012 04:32 (thirteen years ago)

Scored a used copy of the new vinyl last week. Think I prefer Mazes, as it still comes off a little more muscular. Thanks, hipster-who-sold-it-back-a-week-after-release-were-you-just-in-it-for-the-download-card?

new album, Shadow of the Sun, streaming on npr http://www.npr.org/series/98679384/first-listen
haven't been keeping up with WS or MD but this one sounds great.

mizzell, Monday, 23 February 2015 17:15 (eleven years ago)

new album is cool -- my usual response to these guys when they have a new one is to first think: "huh they're still doing this ho hum" and then a minute later to think "I LOVE MOON DUO."

tylerw, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 23:27 (eleven years ago)

Shjips have a new album out too, correct?

the saer returns (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 4 March 2015 01:38 (eleven years ago)

Not that I know of?

tylerw, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 02:14 (eleven years ago)

Somehow this album seems less jammy than the other ones. Either that or it's all starting to blend together.

skip, Monday, 9 March 2015 21:38 (eleven years ago)

This one is definitely less jammy and more straight up song oriented, but I don't think it's a bad look for them.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 9 March 2015 21:43 (eleven years ago)

i started this thread quite enthusiastically, but in the long run wind up something of a fence-sitter. i dearly love their sound and went through brief but intense honeymoon periods with both mazes and circles, but in the long run, neither had much staying power for me. i tend to get bored a few tracks in. maybe the new drummer will help.

2-chords, a farfisa organ and peons to the lord (contenderizer), Monday, 9 March 2015 22:03 (eleven years ago)

I get where you are coming from contenderizer, but I actually think the more straight ahead songwriting approach might get you there more than the new drummer. It helps things feel more focused and less open-ended.

ƋППṍӮɨ∏ğڵșěᶉᶇдM℮ (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 9 March 2015 22:13 (eleven years ago)

they have a drummer now? damn

example (crüt), Monday, 9 March 2015 22:15 (eleven years ago)

oh! well that changes things
i was getting bored with them too but if they have a human drummer it might be better.

groundless round (La Lechera), Monday, 9 March 2015 22:26 (eleven years ago)

maybe the drummer helped with their songwriting

new album rules btw, relentless motorik freakouts with guitar shards flying everywhere

sleeve, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 17:28 (nine years ago)

I like the new one despite them having bi virtually no personality or unique sonic identity at all.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 18:09 (nine years ago)

they put on a good show, worth seeing (even if it's weird that there's no drummer).

skip, Wednesday, 15 March 2017 19:51 (nine years ago)

i love every moon duo album for about a week. then i never want to hear them again.

different how

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 16:04 (nine years ago)

A lot of softer textures, less aggressive guitars, all the ingredients are still there but the proportions are different. This is the first album of theirs that sounds different from all the rest to my ears.

got both Vols I and II and yeah II def has some departures from their signature style. interesting! both are grebt

Οὖτις, Friday, 20 October 2017 21:37 (eight years ago)

I kind of hope we treat these two volumes as one single double-release for the eoy rollouts. I wish they would've been ballsy enough to release it that way.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Friday, 20 October 2017 22:41 (eight years ago)

one year passes...

I don’t know if I’m on board with the new album. Feels like some sort of indie version of U2’s pop. As if they’re trying to make some sort of psychedelic disco album but ultimately it ends up sounding overwrought and it’s drenched in way too much effects. It’s dizzying... not in a good way.
