i read something recently that contained a sentence something like "dare we say they sound like early Hawkwind mixed with Can?!" and seriously, considering the band they were talking about, my answer is no, you do not.

So I should spend my hard earned music journalist dollars on this?

i don't hear a ton of psych in this, although i guess any psych would be by way of paisley underground dreampop.

... as i've said elsewhere, it's suicide + the more minimalist aspects of spacemen 3 + galaxie 500/luna.

see i'm probably part of the problem -- suicide, spacemen 3 and g-500 are all psychedelic bands to me.

I heard Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down A Dream" yesterday and it made me think of Moon Duo

on first impression the new one feels a little tame compared to Mazes.

Now is probably the best time in recent memory to have it stolen, it's been reissued on both vinyl and CD recently.

Cool mix. Personally I find it hard to use an Aphrodite's Child song that isn't "Magic Mirror" in a mix, though.

haven't been keeping up with WS or MD but this one sounds great.

new album is cool -- my usual response to these guys when they have a new one is to first think: "huh they're still doing this ho hum" and then a minute later to think "I LOVE MOON DUO."

Somehow this album seems less jammy than the other ones. Either that or it's all starting to blend together.

This one is definitely less jammy and more straight up song oriented, but I don't think it's a bad look for them.

i started this thread quite enthusiastically, but in the long run wind up something of a fence-sitter. i dearly love their sound and went through brief but intense honeymoon periods with both mazes and circles, but in the long run, neither had much staying power for me. i tend to get bored a few tracks in. maybe the new drummer will help.

I get where you are coming from contenderizer, but I actually think the more straight ahead songwriting approach might get you there more than the new drummer. It helps things feel more focused and less open-ended.

I like the new one despite them having bi virtually no personality or unique sonic identity at all.

they put on a good show, worth seeing (even if it's weird that there's no drummer).

i love every moon duo album for about a week. then i never want to hear them again.

A lot of softer textures, less aggressive guitars, all the ingredients are still there but the proportions are different. This is the first album of theirs that sounds different from all the rest to my ears.

got both Vols I and II and yeah II def has some departures from their signature style. interesting! both are grebt

I kind of hope we treat these two volumes as one single double-release for the eoy rollouts. I wish they would've been ballsy enough to release it that way.

I don’t know if I’m on board with the new album. Feels like some sort of indie version of U2’s pop. As if they’re trying to make some sort of psychedelic disco album but ultimately it ends up sounding overwrought and it’s drenched in way too much effects. It’s dizzying... not in a good way.
