― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:19 (thirteen years ago)
given how much we used to hang out together it is super likely you were there
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)
What age were you?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:20 (thirteen years ago)
well esp if i knew you were going somewhere with records, i might have just leapt out and clung to the bumper as you passed my driveway
― I'M THE ONLY ON (jjjusten), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:21 (thirteen years ago)
14?
I think it was just me and my mom though? And then I called you immediately afterward all "DUDE SOMETHING HAPPENED TO MINISTRY, EVERY DAY IS NO LONGER HALLOWEEN"
xp: we would have been 15, I bought that album the week it came out in 88

― Hellhouse, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)
what distinguishes LORAH from middling subsequent efforts is the circumstances which birthed it, i.e. the dissolution of jourgensen's marriage. after that his generic angers about society didn't drive the same teeth-gnashing spleen that flows through LORAH like a downed power line. I spent thanksgiving '88 in a drug induced haze listening to it repeatedly.
also remember calling my college radio station to request "the missing", the DJ yanked it off halfway through and came back mumbling "what happened to ministry?"
― space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)
i think getting the "stigmata" 12" lessened the shock a bit for me but i do remember thinking i hope they don't' take this new direction any further into metal!

I didn't either and now I have an even deeper appreciation of "Flashback", which was already my favorite song on the album
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)
So I prob agree with Edward that with X the big well-known songs are the best (also love Nausea, White Girl, Adult Books, We're Desperate etc).
But that's a good chunk of those first couple albums!
Yes, X is like a singles band, and most of the cuts on their first three albums were singles-worthy. After that it's very hit or miss.
At work and can't really get into this much. I think X does an amazing job of keeping their songs rolling, especially on the first three albums (or first two anyway, plus some of the third). Their songs are propulsive like music for dancing. To say the obvious, it is rock-and-roll, and close to the roots, yes, but spun in a way that caught me as a young teenager and still catches me.

super glad to see buzz or howl show up. even with its handful of meandering tracks, the blazers on here burn so brightly that in toto it's one of their most cohesive records.
the conclusion of "the product" where d boon wordlessly yammers in the waves of sound like some enthralled and massive sea beast is one of my favorite moments in musical history, pure joy
― space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)
HOLE! my number 2 although i had to flip a coin over whether to make it no. 1 or not. a record that probably had a bigger initial impact on me on first listen than any other.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:33 (thirteen years ago)
Are you ready for another shocking low entry especially considering how well a track from it did well in the tracks poll?

yes but first
PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT THE PRODUCT

Atomizer is my guess...
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)
yeah I think I'm harsher on X's material, even from the canon albums there are 3-4 great songs and the rest are so uneventful I can live without hearing 'em ever again. like, here's all I need from the first 3:

thx to listening to rife so many times before i could get my hands on hole, the version of clothes hoist on hole always sounds kind of quaint and cute.

nail and hole ended up side-by-side on my ballot, with the edge going to hole. as I noted above, the production and scope of nail is staggering, especially in light of where studio technology was in 1985 - would love to read a 33 1/3 style book on its creation.
that said, the humor and sprawl of hole wins out for me. at times on nail it feels as though thirlwell fell under the spell of lower east side downers like swans, attempting to suck all the light out of his songs, but that's an arms race he was never gonna win. and altho ironically-heightened misogyny is part and parcel of the foetus sideshow, "pigswill" always rubbed me the wrong way.
― space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:01 (thirteen years ago)
dude I already rambled abt the minutemen
Predictable choice thought it is, Double Nickels is genuinely my fave Minutemen album. Punch Line & Buzz Or Howl are still excellent though and I'm glad to see them placing well (haven't listened to Punch Line for quite a long time though).

i love nail but my love for it has diminished over time while that for hole has remained steadfast. the production on nail is mind-blowing and i too would like to read a 33 1/3 style book about its making but mr. ruin's macho posturing throughout it does grate a bit on my ears while his wordplay seemed to be trying to be too clever unlike hole which has moments of genuine genius / hysterical lyric writing. anything (viva) and the pigdome comes remain forever classic though. xp
halber mensch my no. 3.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)
you know you can REALLY hear the precursor to a lot of the Venture Brothers music on Hole
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:07 (thirteen years ago)
I could've conceivably voted for any of the minutemen noms but restricted myself to a single album
― space dokken (Edward III), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:08 (thirteen years ago)
xp Absolutely! It only adds to my love of the Venture Bros.
― Frobisher the (Viceroy), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
Minutemen are such an effortlessly loveable band I think.
― chewed postcard to robert smith (Mr Andy M), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
same thing w/ einsturzende, halber mensch is the one I went for as being best emblematic of their various impulses and prolly the one I listen to most, tho I think drawings of patient OT is a more beserk listening experience overall

I'm surprised to see covers I don't recognize at all from bands I was/am at least very aware of (e.g. that last Einsturzende, and also one earlier from Meat Puppets, I think).
― _Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)
re no foetus in the top 50 : i agree, but still, the fact that all 3 of the classic trilogy gets some ilm love in such a massive wide ranging list proves that this is the place for me.

my vinyl copy of hole is a double 12" w/ the album on one and a compilation of EP tracks on the other: http://www.discogs.com/Scraping-Foetus-Off-The-Wheel-Hole/release/137835
the 12" version of "wash it all off" just can't be played loud enough
