Bet that would never get in rolling stone

I think his mission was to convert all of Morrissey's vegetarians back onto steak. It was a very controversial name at the time, a lot of protesters at his gigs in England. Great album. Would the name be a problem now ?
― Damo Suzuki's Parrot, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:20 (thirteen years ago)
I would bet it would.

Been away for a few days and the first thing I see scrolling down is the recap of the OTHER 80s poll, nearly shit a Rubik's Cube.
― Oneohchex Point Charlie (Spectrist), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:37 (thirteen years ago)
horse rotorvator = my no. 1.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)
No doubt most of ilx would prefer the other poll but I thought it was worth reminding those in this thread of it, see how much contrast there is.xp

Someone I went to high school with sang backing vocals on a Def Leppard song. She was extremely hot.
― _Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
which song?
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:40 (thirteen years ago)
never would've guessed the Coil, Redd Kross or Rapeman (an Albini joint, but a lesser effort that I didn't think had a strong following). what's the deal w/Coil, aside from my vague associations w/Cabaret Voltaire and Controlled Bleeding? started listening to Scatology last night; some cool guitar, but I didn't delve very far into it.
― Hellhouse, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:41 (thirteen years ago)
somewhat surprised at Hysteria being this low
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)
I'm here! Hysteria placed a bit lower than I thought it would but to ease your pain VG, there's still Appetite for Destruction to looks forward to!
― Frobisher the (Viceroy), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)
what's the deal w/Coil
they are possibly the best thing to ever come out of england.
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
wait, we don't have any Poison albums left do we
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
Back In Black needs to be wayyy higher, wtf
― gesange der yuengling (crüt), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)
Sorry, I have no idea. A mutual friend thought her vocals were just included as a joke (because apparently pretty bad), so that might be a clue. I don't know Def Leppard.
― _Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)
and horse rotorvator is of course the best 1980s Anti-Rolling Stone Canon (FREE PUSSY RIOT) Rock record. xp
― stirmonster, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:46 (thirteen years ago)
I don't think I voted Back In Black as high as I voted for individual tracks off that album iirc
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)
well, I'm glad we cleared that up.
xp to stirmonster

I'm off to catch a flight, have fun. I posted the thread on my site, so you may have extra lurkers at least.
― Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)
Actually that reminds me, I was in the Bay Area just over a year ago when the Jazz poll was finishing up. Ended buying a ton of jazz at Amoeba and Rasputin!
― Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)
neds recent article for tQ re def lep actually made me have a desire to hear the album ..
something i would never have thought possible.
― mark e, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:10 (thirteen years ago)
tQ?
Apparently, I stored Hysteria at my parents'! Don't know what I was thinking.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)
tQ = The Quietus

Hysteria felt spacey and otherworldly when I was a kid, right from the bizarre cover art and the weird titles they gave themselves ("Wing Commander" etc) to the insane high-tech production, the surreal breakdowns, the backing vocals that were so glossed-out they were almost bodiless.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:22 (thirteen years ago)
If I listen now, I won't get anything done for the next hour.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)
it was the 1st foetus album i got, and virtually listened to nothing else for 6 months .. so not that hard a choice to be honest.
― mark e, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:25 (thirteen years ago)
Here's Ned's Def Lep/Hysteria piece if anyone's interested - it's pretty good! http://thequietus.com/articles/09833-def-leppard-hysteria
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:30 (thirteen years ago)
I started with Sink, which I loved, but yeah when I found a used cassette of Nail I wore that thing out.
― I'M THE ONLY ON (jjjusten), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:31 (thirteen years ago)
Funny that the vegemite grrrl calls anyone that hates manowar/king diamond/dio/priest/power metal 'false metal' but defends Hysteria!Hysteria is good but is not their best album.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:32 (thirteen years ago)
What would you pick? On Through the Night?
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
Pyromania is my favorite personally
I don't think I've ever gone as far as defending Hysteria in a metal context --- but for me it's an almost perfect album and a really really good crystallization of everything that Def Leppard were really good at. Fun, pop, sly but not dirty... as much trad metal as I love, I also love me a finely crafted pop song and Hysteria's full of them.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
I would pick Pyromania ahead of Hysteria I think, but hey I love those first 4 albums
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:40 (thirteen years ago)
I'm really into albums that work as a whole entity, and not just a collection of songs. Hysteria's *crafted* really well - I can't listen to a single track off that album without immediately hearing the next track in my head or wanting to hear the whole album.
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
in fact, I'm listening to Hysteria right now :D

― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:45 (thirteen years ago)
I like some of Billy Zoom's riffs but otherwise, I can't get into this band at all.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 16:46 (thirteen years ago)
I actually prefer Wild Gift. I gave the #1 vote to Los Angeles by accident. If I had been paying more attention I would have had Los Angeles as #2 and Wild Gift as #1. (Sorry, X has gradually emerged as pretty much my favorite 80s rock band.)
