what? he only made my favorite song of the past several years? I thought I was pretty clearly on record as being a huge booster of the Art Dealer Chic EPs and loving the singles from the first album.

i do have mild anxiety that he'll end up w/ The-Dream's career arc (three big singles off the first album, even bigger single off the lead single and then radio turns its back) but i have a feeling this'll do well with follow-up singles.

this is an interesting parallel but for whatever reason it feels like miguel has more momentum right now?

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

intense excitement at watching new video dampened slightly by ad below the video through which I find out chris brown has a single out called 'don't judge me'

barthes simpson, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:45 (thirteen years ago)

or maybe i'm projecting but i guess i always sort of felt like we were on this wild ride with terius, like it was so hilarious & crazy that he turned into a radio star that i wasn't even really surprised when it dried up. terius felt to me like an autuer who happened to trickle up in a weird flash, but miguel feels like a career radio artist who just happens to be sneaking really good, cool shit into his songs.

he looked pretty awkward kissing that girl against the wall

barthes simpson, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:49 (thirteen years ago)

hey everybody, aren't you excited about the OFFICIAL remix of "Adorn" featuring Wiz Khalifa? no? wait, where are you going?

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:50 (thirteen years ago)

i think that's just a freestyle that they tacked onto the album since it already existed

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 02:51 (thirteen years ago)

haha i posted that itt the other day

a LOT of 'official remixes' these days start out as some big star doing a freestyle and then the orig. artist's label goes and decides to put their cosign on it

lol @ the headphones scene for that moment in the song, kind of perfect

For whatever it's worth, the internet tells me that's his real life girlfriend Nazanin Mandi.

had an amazing moment vibesing to adorn on the underground yesterday when i walked past a near-exact miguel doppelganger, this lil tiny stylish mexi-asiatic lookin dude rocking an impressive quiff wearing a leather jacket. sort of wanted to pick him up and throw him in the air in celebration

then a moment of terror thinking i can't believe i used to have an even bigger quiff than that wait how many of those guys do i ever see in life was that him????

mm, maybe for a garden gnome

is 'do you' the official next single then? sounded like a smash to me but i wondered if they'd edit out druuuugs and more importantly how exactly. anyone heard it in the wild?

r|t|c, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 21:37 (thirteen years ago)

It'll be fascinating watching "Do You" climb the R&B chart

the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 21:39 (thirteen years ago)

i think it's always been planned as the follow up to "adorn" and i guess they're going through with that

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

single version on spotify goes "do you like looooove"

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

it reasons that's why they changed the name from "drugs" to "do you..."

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

OK, so it's a quite a weird track that way, right? I really like it a lot, but find myself thinking in pretty open-ended ways about the sentiment, and the way it's phrased.

MikoMcha, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 22:11 (thirteen years ago)

well it's a pun, it starts out with "do you like drugs" like a question and then at the end adds "i'm gonna do you like drugs tonight"

la goonies (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 22:14 (thirteen years ago)

so does he say "i'm gonna do you like love tonight"? need to listen to that single edit

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 October 2012 05:09 (thirteen years ago)

Sweet, now I can talk about it!

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 4 October 2012 05:16 (thirteen years ago)

i think it's a pretty nice accomplishment, actually

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 October 2012 05:25 (thirteen years ago)

yeah its cool.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 4 October 2012 05:28 (thirteen years ago)

i sort of said this before but it's nice to see him rewarded for his reverse-crossover attempt while still being able to grow his core fanbase. a pretty rare feat.

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 4 October 2012 05:32 (thirteen years ago)

Indeed.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 4 October 2012 05:33 (thirteen years ago)

Good review.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Thursday, 4 October 2012 06:01 (thirteen years ago)

What a remix!

like the review, don't like the ELEVEN frank ocean headlines underneath the review

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Thursday, 4 October 2012 12:54 (thirteen years ago)

If the Gibbs tape is an 8.2, this is a 9.4 though.

what review?

yes

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

weird quote from that: 'a wonderfully considered album from an artist who was starting to seem a lot like a forgotten gem in the wake of mishandled promotion.'

wasn't Sure Thing a huge huge hit r&b chart hit? do they just mean 'indie people weren't listening until now' ?

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

his first album could be considered a commercial triumph or totally under the radar depending on what lens you're viewing it through, but yeah that way of phrasing it was pretty false.

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Thursday, 4 October 2012 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah that's what i mean, the lens of 'what people in brooklyn/portland are listening to' is pretty reductive

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 4 October 2012 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

well it could also be viewed as unsuccessful through the lens of "doesn't sell as much/cross over to pop radio as much as Usher or Chris Brown"

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Thursday, 4 October 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

The demographics at his Howard Theatre show in DC seemed like 99% African-American (and mostly women) which is reflective of that prior inability to crossover to pop or indie
