i'd guess that as filth made it, cop will be in there (in the 70s?). i think it sounds very pleasant; 'why hide' is almost a lullaby.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:04 (thirteen years ago)

Will start around 1-2pm I think.
Anyone late to the poll or catching up can still talk about the albums already in the 400-81.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:09 (thirteen years ago)

not much to talk about in the last 320 albums imo

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:11 (thirteen years ago)

nail has one of the greatest production jobs of the 80s. wish he had done an entire album of "pigdom come" themes.

I used to spend summers with my grandparents in erie PA, all my friends there were metalheads who hung out drinking by the railroad tracks. they thought I listened to a bunch of punk rock bullshit, and one of the only things that was a hit w/ that crowd, inexplicably, was "the throne of agony".

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure I'm going to see most of the remainder of my ballot, save 2 or 3

don't get me wrong, I love it, but it's not exactly a heart-warming and beloved chestnut. having read quite a few Swans reviews over the years, I think it's safe to say that it's their most loathed rec (save for perhaps The Burning World, which is obv loathed f/v. different reasons). I think Cop will make the cut, but when I started listening to it many years ago, very few people liked it and a lot of people I played it for hated it, and that impression is tough to shake.

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

i guess we're not gonna get any Minutemen LPs besides Double Nickels, huh?

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:18 (thirteen years ago)

No Means No are one of the most mind-blowing 60 plus/70 somethings I have ever seen.

Oh, I'm well aware of the vast array of loud, dissonant music consumed these days. that doesn't make the notion of Cop as a critical fave any less foreign to the section of my brain that carries around those intense initial reactions from the past.

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:27 (thirteen years ago)

I think Cop will make the cut, but when I started listening to it many years ago, very few people liked it and a lot of people I played it for hated it, and that impression is tough to shake.

i had a few "cop" devoted friends who hated everything post "cop" as they thought it was too diluted but i also had a very close friend who decided if that was the kind of music i was into our friendship couldn't continue. it didn't. i love "cop" but if they had combined "greed" and "holy money' as one album, i think that would be my swans zenith.

yeah if fIREHOSE did ok i'd imagine what makes a man start fires? is a certainty and punch line very likely

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

I had the impression that fIREHOSE was more popular, or at least more commercially successful than the Minutemen?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

That seems reasonable. It seemed like they built on the momentum they already had with the Minutemen for a while.

timellison, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

in the moment maybe - momentum plus better distribution from late 80s sst (vs early-mid 80s sst) and columbia. in 2012 no fucking way. last.fm stats - minutemen: 219,336 listeners, 6,363,443 scrobbles all time, firehose: 52,851 listeners, 720,511 scrobbles all time.

balls, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 00:26 (thirteen years ago)

Wow.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 00:28 (thirteen years ago)

i'm trying to think of other examples where a followup band was more successful in the moment at their peak or whatever but in the grand scheme of history nowhere near - clash vs bad (not sure this holds up to any scrutiny fwiw), mission of burma vs volcano suns, black flag vs rollins band, throwing muses vs belly, pixies vs breeders (very debatable), soundgarden vs audioslave (scared at the possibility this is true), amboy dukes vs damn yankees.

balls, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 00:48 (thirteen years ago)

Gories vs. Dirbombs

timellison, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 00:52 (thirteen years ago)

DirTbombs

timellison, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 00:52 (thirteen years ago)

misfits vs danzig
sebadoh vs folk implosion
the jam vs the style council
the english beat vs general public vs fine young cannibals

cock chirea, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:08 (thirteen years ago)

the specials vs fun boy three vs the colourfield

cock chirea, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:10 (thirteen years ago)

sugar vs. huskers i think is pretty similar to firehose in that way

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:22 (thirteen years ago)

suicidal tendencies vs infectious grooves

cock chirea, Wednesday, 3 October 2012 01:29 (thirteen years ago)

i almost wrote sugar vs husker but that seemed even more debatable than breeders vs pixies. plus sugar fandom in athens and on ilx means i can't really get a grip on sugar's lasting popularity/legacy. obv much bigger at peak. last.fm stats fwiw - husker du: 293,064 listeners, 7,249,217 scrobbles all time, sugar: 103,197 listeners, 1,304,680 scrobbles all time. so maybe!

its weird how Up on the Sun placed lower here than on the generalist 80s albums poll; i really have no idea what to expect as we head towards the top...

I think his mission was to convert all of Morrissey's vegetarians back onto steak. It was a very controversial name at the time, a lot of protesters at his gigs in England. Great album. Would the name be a problem now ?
