set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:30 (thirteen years ago)

i appreciate band of susans heads up because i have always just lumped them into the late 90s three word band names with proper names in them (better than ezra, letters to cleo). srsly. it appears that they are a little different than that.

also can i veto the hanoi rocks homework assignment and push really really hard for the wipers if you haven't heard them? i found that 3 cd box set for a dollar at the salvation army by my house and bought it because why not and holy shit, they are goooooood.

xpost i try to do my best

Therion - Beyond Santorum (jjjusten), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

veto fuck, can he not listen to the wipers AND hanoi rocks lol

fascist :)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

i thought it would win it before the poll started.
Unlike the tracks poll where the last 2 votes swapped the top 2 places the albums winner led from the start and it wasn't The Cure. Which shocked me, but hey a poll needs shocks n surprises.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:33 (thirteen years ago)

he should listen to the wipers and hanoi rocks simultaneously

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:34 (thirteen years ago)

And when that skinny puppies rarities comp tops the poll jjj will buy all the hanoi rocks albums like he promised

Cheers, I'll prob be listening to them before the night is out. Youth Of America was one of my big finds from the tracks poll rollout, one of the tunes where I thought 'wait, how come I never heard this before?'. It almost feels like the 80s equivalent of Time Has Come Today if that's not too corny a comparison.

Haha if I am right about the chronology here I think this means djp and I have one more reason for infinite high fives

Therion - Beyond Santorum (jjjusten), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:38 (thirteen years ago)

because djp was in the last 2 ballots? i think onimo was the other

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

OUR VOTES MATTERED

set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:40 (thirteen years ago)

yeah guys the fun part is over, i'm sorry

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)

wow, that head of david placement is insane

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

I would've been surprised if it placed at all, let alone beating stuff like killers and misfits walk among us

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:58 (thirteen years ago)

I never expected that voters in an 80s heavy/noisy rock poll would put the Cure at #1, although I did think there was a chance that they might go top 50. My money is on Daydream Nation for #1.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

u_u

there's a youtube playlist for head of david's LP

www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gpjt3AQZNc&feature=share&list=PL10B3164BB9CC5D55

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:06 (thirteen years ago)

dunno why sund4r ilm loves the cure and it still got loads of high placing votes. Just not the 30 it needed. I'm sure if a lot of people had looked at the noms and saw the cure/u2/rem etc then they could have been top 10 but I guess most dismissed at as i heavy/noisy/indie rock poll so didn't bother.

Anyway lets start the top 100

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:07 (thirteen years ago)

just remembered I received head of david's LP as an xmas gift from girlfriend in '86

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:09 (thirteen years ago)

head of david WIN!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

man Pornography is such a beast of an album

We writhed under a red light
Voodoo smile, Siamese twins
The girl at the window looks at me for an hour
Then everything falls apart
Broken inside me, it falls apart
The walls and the ceiling move in time
Push a blade into my hand
Slowly up the stairs
And into the room
Is it always like this?
Dancing in my pocket
Worms eat my skin
She glows and grows with arms outstretched
Her legs around me
In the morning, I cried

kind of impressed that Glenn Branca beat Pornography.

gesange der yuengling (crüt), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:25 (thirteen years ago)

On The Ascension
by R. Christgau

Okay,
so he makes hot
"experimental"
("serious") ("classical") ("new")
music.

What we wanna know
is whether it's cool
rock and roll
("rock").

Not by me.

It's great sonically,
with ringing overtones
that remind me of a carillon
or the Byrds,

but the beat's overstated
and the sense of structure
(i.e. climax)
mired in nineteenth-century
corn.

This can be endearing
in Pete Townshend
or Bruce Springsteen
(maybe even opera),

but it sounds weak-minded
in an artist of such otherwise
austere means.

fuck christgau and his shitty opinions

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:26 (thirteen years ago)

Pornography is an intense album, just missed my top 50 only because I'm only in the mood for it certain times. I'll shut up about them after this, but fans of that would probably like Comsat Angels' Fiction.

X on the other hand, gets played a lot in my house.

Does a friendly mod want to edit thread title to Counting Down Top 100?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

Branca’s Ascension highlights the brief period after Theoretical Girls and Static but before the symphonies, when he channeled the angularity of no wave into a form of extended art-rock using hard-rock dynamics fed by a sense of classical composition to direct no wave’s scattered energies into rhythmically jagged but compelling hybrid works. a loud landmark far removed from sterile avant-garde fussing.

two great tracks:
