much prefer it to Monsters. has a breezier, more country-informed feel.

OK, sounds promising, I'll give it a listen tonight.

Band of Susans seem to be doing very well. I'm totally unfamiliar with them. Is the above a good place to start?
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)
yes!
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)
I would say get the first album instead (Hope Against Hope). Also, that cover is some nasty shit.
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)
ta, will check them out.
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)
get both
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)
the name puts me off TBH. They sound pretty no-wavey on first listen.

One of my votes I think
Neil: Their basic deal is they're a bunch of folks that met through playing with Rhys Chatham iirc and they're taking that loud multi-guitar ringing overtones thing and writing straight-up rock songs around it. They were called Band of Susans cos there were 3 different Susans in the band in their first incarnation. Think that two of those had left by the time of the second album (nasty red cover one) and Page Hamilton of Helmet had joined instead.
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:01 (thirteen years ago)
man, Ice Cream for Crow is such a great, solid album. Beefheart kind of went out at his peak imo (lol I know that's hardly a controversial opinion or anything)
― remtrollison (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:03 (thirteen years ago)
i had a similar problem with Band of Susans as a name. kind of started to seem more reasonable when i learned that there were actually a whole bunch of people called Susan in the band (at various stages).
oh, NickB just mentioned. my post is now kinda superfluous.
― charlie h, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)
OTM - some days it's my favourite Beefheart. Not the most groundbreaking or anything, but it def has some of his loveliest music
xp to D&M
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)
Huevos is AWESOME, probably their most fun album
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:08 (thirteen years ago)
My fave album Mirage wasn't even nominated haha
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:10 (thirteen years ago)
tbf Mirage is the least rocking
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:12 (thirteen years ago)

It's been a long time since I owned it, but that Buzz Factory cover looks a bit wrong to me.
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:22 (thirteen years ago)
no it's right. I still own it! It's a brilliant album.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:25 (thirteen years ago)
re: Band of Susans:
Band of Susans were among the NYC post-no-wave guitar bands, and out of all them took the most literal-minded approach to multi-guitar attack, stacking three layers of guitar din in a drive towards a sonic density that aims more f/an exuberant hard-psych soundwall than the kind of reinvention of hard rock that defined some of their peers. Hope Against Hope exemplifies the punch of their early monomaniacal focus, while Love Agenda tempers that attack f/a more conventional, pop-oriented effect that IMO feels flat and at times even enervated, if only b/c the band sound a bit lost, especially on the back half of the rec.
Hope Against Hope was v. high on my ballot, and here are my two fave tracks:

Never much of a Bunnymen fan, sorry!
Candy Apple Grey is the only album so far which I ever bought. Pretty sure I've got a home-taped copy of Freedom knocking around somewhere, as well.
― mike t-diva, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)
home taping is killing music!
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)
(I once fell asleep during a Bunnymen set. London Lyceum, 1980. Long day at work, long bill at the gig, comfy step. A Certain Ration broke me out of my slumber.)

fucking love this thread

"Ratio", duh
thanks for the BoS lowdown. I am liking Love Agenda!
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)
Mike's 80s was very different to the others in this thread (the ones actually buying this music back then)
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)
Maybe that Buzz Factory is the CD version or something? Pretty sure mine didn't have the big writing on it.
Wasn't all that much into them at the time, but have been having a weird Bunnymen kick of late. Seem to be a bit of a forgotten band now, you never see their name around, but there is a whole lot of stuff around that bears some resemblance to them. Some of it even quite popular.
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:34 (thirteen years ago)
Sad to see The Sound not charting in the albums poll. Those first 2 LP's really deserve better than languishing in obscurity.

#168#274
Were they tarnished by ill-advised 90s comeback: hanging out with the Gallaghers, generally looking like Richard Ashcroft's petulant uncles?
― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:37 (thirteen years ago)
I think it was more Coldplay citing them as an influence.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
misfits not cracking the top 100 is some bullshit, guess it's time to bump that comp thread again
― space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)
untrue, check the playlist. two tracks unavailable, but the rest of the rec is there (hoping that I'm not being tricked by local-files availability)

Hopefully the albums poll has as many surprises in store as its singles counterpart.
