Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:14 (thirteen years ago)

Live Skull totally rocked.

― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, October 1, 2012 6:06 PM (9 minutes ago)

Yeah, definitely when Thalia Zedek was in the band. Maybe they did more on the early records than I'm remembering, too.

timellison, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:17 (thirteen years ago)

holy shit actual canonical ROCK in this poll = ZZ Top

fuck yes

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

HELL YEA Skinny Puppy! VIVIsectVI was their first album that I heard. It's usually a toss up between this and Too Dark Park for my favorite.

Raoul Duke (ku4u1u), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:30 (thirteen years ago)

VIVIsectVI was one that i pulled out and listened to during my ballot making and realized how gonzo badass it still sounds this many years later

Therion - Beyond Santorum (jjjusten), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

likewise. time has been kind to it. genius and way ahead of its time programming.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:43 (thirteen years ago)

Yea, IMO you need some headphones to fully appreciate it.

Raoul Duke (ku4u1u), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:46 (thirteen years ago)

oh god, so much rock in pre-zedek live skull, "fort belvedere", "x w/ the light", "glee product". "haircut for pigs".

"mr evil" doesn't just rock, it swings!

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

^^^

OTM, but I've moved on to trying to crack the mystery of Skinny Puppy's appeal.

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

are you an oldschool ministry fan? if so, give facist jock itch a try

Therion - Beyond Santorum (jjjusten), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:02 (thirteen years ago)

"if so, give fascist jock itch a try" = the "centipedes? in my vagina?" of 2012

Therion - Beyond Santorum (jjjusten), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:03 (thirteen years ago)

FOR sticks w/the traditional instrumentation, though, making it a bit like the outraged version of post-rock.

compared to neubauten maybe, but there's very little bass on the record due to wobble's exit and levene was more interested in playing offbeat instruments like the violumpet than gtr

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:04 (thirteen years ago)

he tried fascist jock itch in high school, did not agree w/ him iirc

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:06 (thirteen years ago)

re you an oldschool ministry fan? if so, give facist jock itch a try

their recs are so neat and clean and tidy and fussy that I'm not hearing the gonzo badass aspect. I keep thinking of the Calvin Klein aesthetic writ in leather and pushed to disaffected youth.

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:07 (thirteen years ago)

vx gas attack = gonzo badass.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:11 (thirteen years ago)

yes! exactly!

Therion - Beyond Santorum (jjjusten), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:12 (thirteen years ago)

I'm listening to "Fort Belvedere" on Youtube for the first time in many years. The guitars are rocking, but the rhythm section sounds like a band on Postcard.

timellison, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:19 (thirteen years ago)

you were on firmer ground w/Thin White Rope and The Dream Syndicate. this Live Skull fixation is quixotic at best.

Hellhouse, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:28 (thirteen years ago)

Nice rhetorical move to call two sentences a "fixation."

timellison, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:31 (thirteen years ago)

listening w/o hearing

xp

space dokken (Edward III), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:34 (thirteen years ago)

Aw, I insulted some indie rock music, did I?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 02:49 (thirteen years ago)

I do like mid-era Skinny Puppy* tons and tons but Bites and Remission will always be the pinnacle for me with them

* I guess I can't keep calling the three albums that placed on this poll "mid-era" anymore, can I

now that's low. Not a critically revered album I guess.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:18 (thirteen years ago)

It is in the UK but not in the USA afaik

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:21 (thirteen years ago)

When the warners cds got reissuedin the early 90s Kerrang and a few other mags all said it was the last of the classic albums. But NME only had Warehouse in their top albums (ever or 80s i forget) list.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:24 (thirteen years ago)

upon release candy apple grey was filed under disappointing major label debut by a lot of folks.

as time goes on I like husker du less and less. as this poll goes on we will see them more and more.

I would so much prefer an instrumental version of Discipline.

Eno's got a new generative music app out for the iPad (Matt #2), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:42 (thirteen years ago)

a bit of old biz:

I voted f/Swans' Public Castration is a Good Idea, and though not my #1, it was damn close. the rec used to be available on iTunes and everywhere else, but now it's not even on Spotify, so here are two of tracks of exhausting world-weariness hammered into hypnotic brutality:

Swans - A Screw: http://youtu.be/krw03hVF1RQ
Swans - Money is Flesh: http://youtu.be/jlTvNcn5j0E

the tracks admittedly work better in the context of the album's obsessive, two-rec grind that concretizes its feverish will-to-live hitting the immovable object of overwhelming futility.

Candy Apple Grey was the first Dü album I bought - the Warner Bros. CDs were always cheaper than the SST ones but I do recall it being cited as their best (this was in about 1998 fwiw). Nowadays I'd rank it as second-best behind Flip Your Wig but then my tastes very much lean towards pop. (xposts)

I've never heard Huevos but noticed a lot of praise for it on one of the Meat Puppets threads. I love the cover. Am I right in thinking it's in a similar style to Monsters?

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

yeah zz top influenced and awesome

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

much prefer it to Monsters. has a breezier, more country-informed feel.

charlie h, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:28 (thirteen years ago)

OK, sounds promising, I'll give it a listen tonight.

Band of Susans seem to be doing very well. I'm totally unfamiliar with them. Is the above a good place to start?

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

yes!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

I would say get the first album instead (Hope Against Hope). Also, that cover is some nasty shit.

DJ Mooncup (NickB), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

ta, will check them out.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:50 (thirteen years ago)

get both

Algerian Goalkeeper, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

the name puts me off TBH. They sound pretty no-wavey on first listen.
