makes sense to me:

andrew ‏@noz
the best way to maintain ownership of your music is to not sell it to a major label in the first place.

andrew ‏@noz
especially if you happen to make wholly inaccessible and unmarketable noise rap.

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Monday, 1 October 2012 22:24 (thirteen years ago)

he's got a point.

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 October 2012 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

i've always thought the signing was ridiculous, but getting all sourpuss scornful that an 'inaccessible noise rap' band think they are too cool to act professionally just shows up a weird set of priorities/values

ogmor, Monday, 1 October 2012 22:32 (thirteen years ago)

not feeling this as much as Money Store. Plus I think a punk band signing to a major label and then bitching about it is retarded.

UnderControl, Monday, 1 October 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

not really... it's a pretty sensible statement xp

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 October 2012 22:35 (thirteen years ago)

i guess you find more comfort in the world-weary dad tone than i do

ogmor, Monday, 1 October 2012 22:39 (thirteen years ago)

not really, but i don't see what's wrong in pointing out the reality of death grips situation

instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 October 2012 22:53 (thirteen years ago)

i don't see anything wrong with trying to fuck with a major label by tricking them into signing your unmarketable noise-rap but don't get all pissy when they don't want to release two albums of it in one year ffs unless this was all some extended performance art thing in which case good show boys

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:05 (thirteen years ago)

In fact I think tricking a major label into signing yr unmarketable noise-rap is pretty great and this new album is pretty great so I'm fine with everything that has happened.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:06 (thirteen years ago)

xp jordan
except that is no more 'the reality' than label signs a band it doesn't know how to market or handle... we don't even know what happened w/ the site yet. as it stands it's a dick joke & some vitriol, chiding the band "oh if only they'd handled their industry responsibilities more sensibly they cld be on the property ladder now" comes off all hegemonic conservative

but yes i haven't got a problem w/ how this has unfolded - everyone's playing their part properly; i love boners; some good track titles - it's a good time

ogmor, Monday, 1 October 2012 23:26 (thirteen years ago)

chiding the band "oh if only they'd handled their industry responsibilities more sensibly they cld be on the property ladder now" comes off all hegemonic conservative

yeah i don't think that's what he was saying at all

lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:29 (thirteen years ago)

please stop typing noise rap

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:33 (thirteen years ago)

it's funny because they already canceled a tour to make this fabled TWO ALBUMS IN A YEAR thing happen and it seemed like fans were more pissed about no shows than they were excited about more studio recordings (which made me assume the label were gung ho about the 2nd album coming ASAP). so it's like, build a following and get signed just to rush an album than neither the fans nor the label were chomping at the bit for, in ways that actively annoy both.

jaz a make wardance (some dude), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

??

i think the point is don't sign to a major to begin with! it's never been easier to not sign with a major label!

they should have just signed to Load or something that made sense then it would have been a boner city extravaganza

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:40 (thirteen years ago)

reading this totally in-keeping bit of snottiness as naive/poorly judged completely ignores the image/myth the band have built up, and i can believe they did this in part to reassert their control over that after the cancellation fiasco

ogmor, Monday, 1 October 2012 23:44 (thirteen years ago)

they'd have been better on an indie, but i'm perfectly happy for them to burn their bridges like this given where they are, who cares?

ogmor, Monday, 1 October 2012 23:46 (thirteen years ago)

who said they are naive? i think they know what they are doing they are just being full of shit about it. obv they are smart dudes.

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:48 (thirteen years ago)

also although i like this i think they have been slowly getting less fun since ex-military so i'd like to see them take a hard left turn

ogmor, Monday, 1 October 2012 23:52 (thirteen years ago)

I'm still not clear why Epic even signed them (I mean I assume DG got an advance so I see what they get out of it.).

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Monday, 1 October 2012 23:59 (thirteen years ago)

"inaccessible and unmarketable noise rap"

uh yeah this is why hipsters were playing this at the outside bar this summer

la reid had been reading society of the spectacle & saw his chance

ogmor, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

death grips is pretty hooky, they have a lot of catchy parts IMO, some noisy textures and yelling but i think it's poppy

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

This better than Money Store and has a dick on it

this is NOT better than money store but i still like it a lot but i think you gotta be pretty into willful abuse to enjoy it which i guess was probably their intent wheat-from-chaffing their audience or whatever.

inaccessible, really? i'd like to think audiences aren't _that_ stupid, never mind the success of that awful carly rae jepsen song. people can get into dumb crap and also interesting weird shit.

sarahell, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 06:42 (thirteen years ago)

you can love both, it's a complex world

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

yeah. i played money store for my brother whose musical tastes run the gamut from 90s ska to 90s pop-punk and he thought it was pretty good.

Spectrum, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 14:32 (thirteen years ago)

this new one is really awesome

world of dogs!

farte blanche (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 17:04 (thirteen years ago)

good record. funny how it's a thin line between these beats sounding like the FUTURE vs heavy '90s vibes (like the last few tracks).

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 18:52 (thirteen years ago)

I liked the first record but haven't cared enough to check out these new ones. Kind of intrigued by their dick tho.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:42 (thirteen years ago)

had an actual debate with my gf last night about whether it's a real dick or not

have a sandwich or ice cream sandwich (Jordan), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:44 (thirteen years ago)

Pretty sure that's the genuine article.

Cap'n Hug-a-Thug (The Reverend), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 19:45 (thirteen years ago)

Dare I ask how detailed you got.
