^Gave the Avengers album a listen and it still sounds good. I can't tell if this is how it actually worked out historically, but their tunes really sound like the blueprint for a whole swathe of the more straightahead US punk that's appeared over the last 30-odd years - I can hear traces of their sound in stuff by X, Adolescents, TSOL & then later on Pennywise, Offspring, Distillers etc. Maybe that sounds a bit like damning with faint praise given that the later stuff in that vein can be fairly mediocre, but I think Avengers really nailed that sound (basically garage-rock at root I guess but wound up super-tight and with a layer of extra nastiness).

Definitely prefer the Wayne songs on that to the Gary ones, second half of that is a bit of a drag imo.

Throwing Muses s/t was my #9; thought it was a lock for the top 100--I really have no idea what to expect now
anyways, hi-five to the other six who voted for it!

Why were The Mission such utter shite?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 1 October 2012 15:49 (thirteen years ago)
because Eldritch wasn't writing their lyrics and Wayne doesn't have that stentorian bellow
― set me on fire RAAAAH (DJP), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
For a song with such deeply terrible lyrics, Walk Away is soooo fucking great.
― DJ Mooncup (NickB), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
^ Not a bad showing for Suffer, I'd def be more inclined to listen to it rather than No Control these days. It doesn't really have any of their standout songs (except the title track maybe) but just has an appealing overall sound and flows together well. Intro riff to You Are The Government still sounds great too.

Feel like BR's best 80s albums weren't nominated though, blah blah moan whine.

Great album and their best one I think. Not Even Close, Throne of Blood, Ready To Bend, and obviously the title song still sound thrilling to me, they were at their best the harder they pushed it rather than on some of the more meandering stuff.

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 1 October 2012 16:22 (thirteen years ago)
Voted f/Altars of Madness. Difficult to say what exactly sets it apart from the many other death metal recs of the era, but Morbid Angel's penchant for churning out clouds of choking riff-smog atop aggressive but grooving rhythms seems to slot them nicely into an imaginary niche between Drunks With Guns and Skullflower, two other bands that I think of as exploring violent psychosis as a wing of psychedelic derangement (in v. different ways, however). Or maybe it was all lol drugs + college + nasty riffs = guaranteed satisfaction and hopeless bias, so w/e.

didn't you get more votes for your metal polls? i figured a lot of those folks were like "what, plain old hard rock, fuck that" about this poll

There were only a fewall metal ballots iirc so some dude is probably right. I know Glenn will only vote if its a metal poll as otherwise its too hard to make a ballot with having to leave stuff out. Making it all one genre is easier for him.

Black Metal is p cool though it was def different than I expected
I always wanted to check out Drunks with Guns; I didn't know they had any kind of rep at all--after my first attempt at college, I came back to my hometown and start hanging out with a sort wild & druggy crowd. One of my best friends during that time was a budding guitarist, and he wanted to start a band with me called 'Drunk Bums with Guns.' Of course that idea went nowhere, but a few years back whilst cruising RYM I came across Drunks with Guns and wondered if that was where he got that idea. I doubt it though; your chances of being exposed to underground 80s rock where I live is p much nil.
― alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
guys like j3ff will vote in EOY metal poll as they have their lists for whatever mags they get paid by so its just C&P but most of the thread regs dont even bother voting in our poll so basically we rely on other ilxors/lurkers which then leads to it being called hipster metal polls or whatever. But the results are still good imo
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 1 October 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
but j3ff doesnt vote in this or all time polls. but nor does he care about the results otherwise im sure he would post

bad religion suffer is still a pretty killer album despite the mushball vibes of latter day BR. i like several albums that came after suffer, but in a lot of ways that was the last one they pulled a home run on.

― Algerian Goalkeeper, Monday, 1 October 2012 16:42 (thirteen years ago)
I love metal, but I think the places for most of these are fair enough, given how many hundreds of albums they're competing with. I doubt there's ever been any other rock poll that would have Venom and Bathory in the top 200. I would have my favorite Iron Maiden, Piece Of Mind place higher, but I realize it's not everyone's fave.

bad religion suffer is still a pretty killer album despite the mushball vibes of latter day BR.Yeah I would prob still like it more if I hadn't totally burned out on Greg Graffin's earnest-old-man vocal stylings.

Henry's Dream was and still kind of is my favorite album but I think Your Funeral is the album that gave back to me in adulthood. His songwriting here is just, effortless. Like now he really works at it but back then he was all scagged out and living in a squat and collecting Anita Lane's hair in a diary or some shit and just writing the most genius torrid vivid pieces songs
I'm a total fangirl, I make no apologies for it. I'm just in awe of that kind of effortless craft
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
and I fucking love the Bad Seeds in that era
still kinda violent and almost explosive and the quiet stuff they did was always menacing even when it was tender
