no i know that people slept on miguel's first album. he wasn't on pitchfork all the time back then, so it's not surprising

first album both has more good songs and higher highs, though "adorn" might be his best song. new one is very good at what it aims to be, which is a breezy, pleasant 40-minute record, but it isn't the trip the first was
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Monday, 1 October 2012 02:26 (thirteen years ago)
don't really think you're listening to it right if "breezy, pleasant" is what you're getting from it
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Monday, 1 October 2012 02:34 (thirteen years ago)
maybe k3v downloaded a bad leak?
― barthes simpson, Monday, 1 October 2012 02:47 (thirteen years ago)
doubt it but i was talking more about the songcraft than the sonics, admittedly, which haven't grabbed me one way or another
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Monday, 1 October 2012 02:51 (thirteen years ago)
first album has ... higher highs, though "adorn" might be his best song.
this sentence contradicts itself?
i still think "sure thing" is his best song but the rest of kaleidoscope dream kills his first album, though i really might just shove "...all" after "arch & point", i'm so used to that coming next and it's probably the greatest ADC track that didn't get reused.
― lex pretend, Monday, 1 October 2012 06:00 (thirteen years ago)
well i said "might" - in any event the first one has his like 2nd through 5th best songs
― la goonies (k3vin k.), Monday, 1 October 2012 13:38 (thirteen years ago)
Sorry if this was discussed hotheads but what the he'll happened to gravity?
― Moreno, Monday, 1 October 2012 15:04 (thirteen years ago)
Hotheads = up thread. You all seem very chill
― Moreno, Monday, 1 October 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)
lol great typo
what happened like why isn't it on the album? i mean only 3 of the EP songs are on the album, 2 of which were radically changed, and "Gravity" was never a huge favorite.
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)
i'm glad the album is mostly different?
― heiswagger (rennavate), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)
Just seemed like it would do well as a single imo.
― Moreno, Monday, 1 October 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)
i've listened to it about 5 times and my favorites aren't really changing from listen to listen like with the first, and i'm not really discovering new things buried in the songs to love,
totally opposite experience of this record

the combination of that outfit and i guess wiz's height makes miguel look like a midget in that photo
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)
ok he can't be gay because only Elton John would dress so terribly
― taking tiger mountain (up the butt) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:28 (thirteen years ago)
miguel's a good dresser but that outfit is horrifying

wiz makes miguel look short like miguel makes wiz look dignified
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:32 (thirteen years ago)
Gravity is a huge favorite of mine; I was gonna post that that & ...All got hosed, so this Target Deluxe Edition is welcome news.
― alpha flighticles (Drugs A. Money), Monday, 1 October 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)
miguel is tiny tho, he's maybe 5' 7"
― instafapper (J0rdan S.), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)
i'm not saying he's not usually short, i'm saying wiz is not usually dignified
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:11 (thirteen years ago)
"do you?" is the best song to sing along to
― heiswagger (rennavate), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:34 (thirteen years ago)
also, has anyone talked about the censored 'fuck's on "how many drinks?"? is this artistic decision, because the album has a parental advisory diclaimer, so why censor it still?
― heiswagger (rennavate), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:47 (thirteen years ago)
I like the little laser noises at those moments, it's probably an artistic decision.
Either that or my leaked version is ripped off from a censored stream.
― Matt DC, Monday, 1 October 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
yeah i mean i'm cool with it being artistic, cause those laser noises are dope, and it's a more effective by omission kinda thing then.
― heiswagger (rennavate), Monday, 1 October 2012 16:50 (thirteen years ago)
i think my least favorite song on this is "where's the fun in forever" although it's still a good song
― heiswagger (rennavate), Monday, 1 October 2012 21:24 (thirteen years ago)
haha so far there's no consensus

Couldn't watch it either, but "Are you gay?" should be an off-limits question in all interviews
― Evan R, Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:52 (thirteen years ago)
(Even in the case of artists like Frank Ocean and—to a much, much lesser extent—Miguel, whose songwriting gives some reason to suspect they might be)
"Are you gay?" asked by two choads who make gross Rihanna jokes is off limits

i think a writer could ask this question because you can go off record or if the artist doesn't want to talk about it you can just pretend like you didn't ask it, but in a live setting like that it's pretty shitty
― lil dirk (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:55 (thirteen years ago)
in a weird way i think it's kind of better for someone to be able to face down that question live on the air, compared to how gossip blogs constantly insinuate that kind of thing without asking the person directly, or even in print where they can massage the context of their answer with a bunch of "he said, as he shifted uncomfortably in his chair and quickly changed the subject" type stuff.
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)
imo there's just a lot of sweet-voiced men singing love songs throughout the music industry, and they ain't all gay, but in R&B there's been such a strong undercurrent of hip hop bravado the last decade or two that anyone who doesn't carry themselves that way is under suspicion and it's kinda dumb.
― jaz a make wardance (some dude), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:01 (thirteen years ago)
That's true to a point. I can think of few situations in which "Are you gay?" asked live isn't designed to (a) elicit a squirm from the subject (b) be sensationalist at the expense of the subject.
― the ones that I'm near most: fellow outcasts and ilxors (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 October 2012 22:01 (thirteen years ago)
like, I guess Tavis Smiley can ask and be cool.
"true to a point" = ship's penultimate post
