I used to have problems with the production of Pyro, it sounded band on my cheap record player. I got the reissue with the extra live disc a while back and it sounds awesome, both studio and live. They really need to remaster the first two also.

I'm going to be that guy and say that naked city is way too low. Another album that pretty much rewired my head.

Die Kreuzen a v. late cut, and one of the best hardcore recs ever in a field littered w/homogenous crap. jagged and metallic and nasty and tight as fuck. only Man in the Trees IMO matches the intensity of the earlier material while successfully exploring a wider aesthetic (postpunk noise-metal w/occasional grabs f/pop hooks). October File may be due f/a revision, though.

no Foetus Interruptus on Spotify, but here are a couple of entertaining examples of his swaggering, bombastic take on industrial-tinged hard rock:

Foetus Interruptus - English Faggot/Nothin Man: http://youtu.be/wzylm9fdUxQ

Thaw has Foetus toying w/Spinal-Tap levels of rock excess, but his irony is ramped as high as the histrionics, giving you the option to enjoy the rec's untrammeled wallowing in advanced gutter-pomp. EIII may provide the dissenting opinion if he's around.

Hellhouse, Monday, 1 October 2012 02:01 (thirteen years ago)

Have never really got on with solo Nick Cave, but it might be getting near time for me to give him yet another try.

From Her to Eternity's a good place to start. I nominated the rec, like it and think that it's Cave's best, but I still didn't vote f/it because it seems so antithetical to the intent of the poll. this is funny and fucked up b/c people have complained about Mars and Neubauten and Thin White Rope and Public Enemy and Slovenly and Beefheart and every other goddamn band in this poll, and I'm cool w/ALL of it, but anything even remotely resembling vaudeville/showbiz/torch-song croon gets automatically roped off from rock in my mind. I could give you a spiel about theatrical, mannered music negating genuine catharsis or some such horseshit (which may not even be crazy), but I'm really just revealing my own biases and lines of demarcation. I mean, if anyone rocks the singer-songwriter schtick it's Cave on Saint Huck or From Her to Eternity or Cabin Fever!, but as good as these songs are, in the back of my mind I'm still thinking that at base it's all a bit of bombastic twaddle. but that's just me, so fuck all that and get the rec, which is great.

Hellhouse totally otm over Die Kreuzen s/t. I also liked October File a lot, although the production/engineering was too muffled. Man in the Trees got a vote for me in the tracks list.
Blind Idiot God were mining a similar, albeit instrumental furrow.

The Avengers had some wonderful tunes.

Same goes for Wipers, although from recollection their first got my vote. Or was it YoA.

Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Monday, 1 October 2012 07:27 (thirteen years ago)

THAW is fucking insane.

i love it.

i once wore my foetus interruptus t-shirt (album cover art), at a cheesy night club in leeds, and a woman gave me serious grief about the name of the band.

happy daze.

Yay Foetus.

chewed postcard to robert smith (Mr Andy M), Monday, 1 October 2012 09:20 (thirteen years ago)

I need to listen to the Avengers s/t record again, it's another one that I used to like but can now barely remember how it goes.
Surprised that Social Distortion made it, although Mommy's Little Monster is def better than their later stuff. Music-wise it's actually not a million miles away from some early-to-mid period Replacements stuff (to my ears), although obv with different and notably worse lyrics.

chewed postcard to robert smith (Mr Andy M), Monday, 1 October 2012 09:23 (thirteen years ago)

From Her to Eternity's a good place to start. I nominated the rec, like it and think that it's Cave's best,
Thanks for the recommendation. I have heard parts of FHTH but never the whole thing right through. I think generally my problem with Cave solo is that I find the music unengaging (morseo with the stuff from the 90s onwards but even some of the 80s stuff that people tend to find a bit more exciting I've had that problem with). Obviously I wouldn't dispute his talent as a songwriter.

chewed postcard to robert smith (Mr Andy M), Monday, 1 October 2012 09:27 (thirteen years ago)

I love the Avengers but not sure if it should've been allowed in this poll since it's all 70s music. But the boundaries of this poll have always seemed a bit weird to me.

Colonel Poo, Monday, 1 October 2012 09:31 (thirteen years ago)

^Gave the Avengers album a listen and it still sounds good. I can't tell if this is how it actually worked out historically, but their tunes really sound like the blueprint for a whole swathe of the more straightahead US punk that's appeared over the last 30-odd years - I can hear traces of their sound in stuff by X, Adolescents, TSOL & then later on Pennywise, Offspring, Distillers etc. Maybe that sounds a bit like damning with faint praise given that the later stuff in that vein can be fairly mediocre, but I think Avengers really nailed that sound (basically garage-rock at root I guess but wound up super-tight and with a layer of extra nastiness).
